Great film - a peek into a unique upbringing
babsinnz12 October 2022
'North of Normal' is such an appropriate title for this film. The perception of what we feel is 'normal' can be a reflective thought after watching this movie. It was a treat to have a peek into this unique upbringing. I appreciate the honesty and vulnerability of the characters It makes me want to know more of this captivating story.

There are so many mother daughter stories out there - this one, despite the tenacity of the relationships, showed love and compassion and at a deep level.

How each character showed their love was interesting to observe and easy to relate to.

I recommend seeing North of Normal.

Love It, Wish It Was Longer!
alextheparrotfish3 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Before I start I'll put my review into context. I have read part of the book, maybe about half or more.

While the movie lacks many details in the book that make it such an emotionally heightened story, the movie stands well on its own. Choosing to focus on the relationship between Cea and her mom the movie is able to create a compelling narrative in a short amount of time. That being said I personally would've loved if it were longer, and dove deeper into Cea's individual growth and development.

I really want to take a moment to appreciate the way sexual abuse was handled in the film. In a society where so much of the media we are exposed to portrays sexual abuse in a way that is titilating and sensational, there really is no blueprint for ethical portrayal of abuse and survivors. North Of Normal does an incredible job of portraying the Cea's experience of sexual abuse by putting focus on the impact on her through her childhood and adolescence, rather than the event itself.

Awesome acting overall, but Amanda Fix's performance in particular was stelar. The cinematography was also gorgeous and highly effective in supporting and elevating the emotions of the story. I hope to see the story resume in a sequel.

A good yet uncomfortable story, with a slightly lacking ending.

A good yet uncomfortable story, with a slightly lacking ending

An interesting movie, Good acting, strong performance.

Somewhat disturbing story.

About a daughter being raised in an off the beat situation, by her single parent mom, who was also raised with unusual parenting, so she carries it forward, with everything that goes with that.

The Ending was a let down, as this movie is based on a true story, the movie closes on the girl taking a flight...

The true story, her becoming a fairly successful model despite her upbringing, I dont know why they would not have included the smallest piece of that, to give the story a stronger ending...

I the ending did not do the film justice. If you watch it, do your own research to find some happy closure.

Heartfelt and great movie
casseymohns27 September 2022
North of Normal was and has been my favourite book since I read it a few years back and it's my number one go to book to recommend to anyone looking for a book recommendation. When I heard that it was going to be made into a film, I was ecstatic, when I found out it was being filmed in my hometown, I was over the moon with excitement. The movie followed the book well, the book I was able to paint the pictures of what was happening in my head, the movie brought those photos to life. It showed the struggles and the triumphs, the good and the bad, and I hope that it gets released to the general theatres for more people to be able to enjoy this beautiful movie. It will now be my go to book and movie. Hopefully they'll be able to make Nearly Normal the sequel one day too on film.

I'm not crying, You're crying <3
melanieasplund30 September 2022
North of Normal will have you crying and laughing. Actually, the book & the movie will have you experiencing ALL emotions. Cea had a remarkable upbringing with tragedy & triumphs. You will swear the acting you are watching in the movie was playing out in real life before your eyes. You will want to hug every Cea and protect her. Everyone around you in the theatre will fade away. And that's what a great movie experience is all about. All of the actors did a fantastic job. From the moment the movie started, other than the laughter in spots, a hush fell across the packed theatre until the very end. After the movie, I had a couple conversations with people about the movie and the books. One in particular was with an older gentleman (before & after the movie) who loved the first book, but didn't know there was a second book. He was quite excited to go and purchase Nearly Normal & delve into that one. The only unfortunate part about the movie is there is never enough time to cover the entire book...Or maybe there is...do I hear sequel or maybe even threequel?! (LOL Is that a word?). My wish is for everyone near and far, big city or small town, is to get the chance to see this well written, directed and portrayed movie in person on the big screen. Love to every "Cea" in the world. <3.

Far North of Normal
CIFF202230 September 2022
From the opening scene of North Normal, I felt drawn in and gently swept into this captivating movie with its' beautiful scenery and its' complex and endearing characters. I fell in love with Cea Person's books and I was excited and a little nervous to see how her story would be portrayed in film. This movie surpassed my expectations. I was blown away by the wonderful quality of acting and the artful cinematography. I laughed, cried and I came away with much to think about. The relationships and the sensitive subject matter were thoughtfully and creatively handled. It felt real, raw and yet, somehow, beautiful at the same time. My husband has not read Cea's books and he is more of an action/adventure movie guy. Amazingly, he was swept up in the viewing experience as much as I was! There was plenty of adventure to keep him involved and he found the dynamics between the main characters to be captivating and authentic. Bravo!

Heartfelt and touching
ssjjvmb26 September 2022
This movie was so heartfelt, cinematically beautiful and engaging. I laughed, I cried and I totally connected with the protagonist. I love the way delved into the characters and showed every aspect of their world. As a lover of nature, the scenic shots of northern Canada were beautiful and they truly captured the essence of alternating living and mindsets. Though a lot of the story stems in tragedy there is an uplifting and captivating presence about Cea that always has me routing for her. This movie is Truly a MUST SEE if you love coming of age stories, nature and beautiful cinematic experiences.

Absolutely amazing
zennaw-563606 October 2022
Watching Cea's book and life story be turned into a movie was such an amazing experience. It was so well done, the cast was so great for the roles they played and you really got a sense of what she had to live through and how her life was. It was emotional and breathtaking and overall a beautiful story. Cea and her crew were able to capture that amazing sense of realness, watching the movie really pulled on my heartstrings but in the way you want as the audience. This movie was overall amazing. I had a wonderful experience watching it. I definitely recommend it after reading the book so you can really look at the two and match the face to character from reading about the character to than seeing them on the big screen, which was some thing I enjoyed.

Wonderful film!
joannaclark-378296 October 2022
Wonderful adaptation! As a huge fan of Cea's books I have been eagerly awaiting the movie release. I was very impressed with North of Normal on screen. Incredible cinematography, brilliant casting and acting, great screenplay. It was magical to see Cea's story of strength, resilience and survival come to life. As in her books I was deeply moved by the relationship between Cea and her mother in the film. This very complicated connection was portrayed beautifully by all the actors. Cea's unwavering love and loyalty shone through. Great portrayal of Cea's relationship with her grandfather too. Highly recommend.

LOVED!
ann-086776 October 2022
Just saw the movie this evening and can't stop thinking about it. Same feeling when I read the book. The actors were perfect, and truly reflected what I envisioned each character to be like. Right from the beginning I was drawn in to the evolving relationship between Cea and her Mother. That bond was strong, but sadly not enough. I admired Cea's resilience, determination (and sense of humour) throughout and it was skillfully portrayed. The cinematography was also amazing and captured the essence of the story. Great music too! Looking forward to watching the movie again. And hope there will be a sequel.

Cinematic Beauty and Compelling Characters
kimgrant327 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
North of Normal accomplishes so much in just 90 mins in the recreation of Cea Sunrise Person's Memoir by the same name. Immediately drawn in to young Cea's world, the viewer is brought along for the tumultuous ride that is Cea's formative years spent in the wilderness with her unconventional family. The resulting impact this has on Cea and her relationships with her mother and grandfather is so beautifully portrayed by River Price-Maenpaa (young Cea), Amanda Fix (older Cea), Sarah Gadon (Cea's Mom Michelle) and Robert Carlyle (Cea's grandfather "Papa Dick"). The portrayal of complicated family dynamics amidst the backdrop of the rugged wilderness (shot in Northern Ontario) is nothing short of brilliant cinema!

Cea's story of abandonment, trauma and neglect is juxtaposed with tender moments of perseverance, love and triumph.

While the movie doesn't capture everything in North of Normal and Cea's second book Nearly Normal, you are still left cheering for her and wanting more. Cea's story doesn't end there and the world should know where and how her tale continues.

Cea's brave retelling of her childhood experiences, brought to life again through this film will leave a marked impression on its viewrs for a long time. Highly recommend seeing the movie and reading both Cea's books!

Wild Beauty!
ddjrnzfg7 October 2022
Wildly beautiful, the cast, the scenery and the storytelling. Mother and daughter love, never black and white, endlessly unyielding. The characters came to life in the most authentic way, subtle body language saying nothing and everything all at the same time. Thoughtfully, this film was not overloaded with dialog, giving the viewer space and time to feel the emotion, very relatable. It is always exciting to see a film that is unique and captivating at the same time, a precious gift to the audience. I loved the movie being a selective reflection of the book, and having read both books, this movie left me eager for more!

Genuine beauty
nikkib-164126 October 2022
Cea's books have captivated me for years and this long awaited movie did not disappoint! With the setting in this remarkable landscape and so well cast its hard to not be wowed.

From the start the young Cea steals your heart and you fall in love with her dis functional mother character played so well. Her grandfather is played by the wonderful Robert Carlyle and you can see where her brave spirit is installed.

My only criticism is it ends so suddenly and there is so much more to tell. We need a sequel and at a minimum watchers need to read on this lady is just an inspiration. Bravo!!!!

Nikki.

Beautiful story, amazing film
susan-207946 October 2022
I read both of Cea's books and I was so excited when I heard the movie was coming out. After reading the books and loving them, I was so pleased at how well done the movie was. It showed the relationships so beautifully - especially between Cea and her mother. The cinematography was breathtaking, and the movie really captured the feel of the outdoors and the striking beauty of the wilderness she grew up in. The acting was top notch as well, and the casting was spot on. I laughed and I cried throughout, it really pulled at my heartstrings. Well done! I highly recommend this film and I will want to see this gem again.

Love it!
melissasmaui6 October 2022
I have waited in anticipation for this movie to come to life on the big screen. This movie was able to capture the story of Cea's life beautifully!

The characters of the book came to life, just as I imagined when I was reading it. The actors played their parts so naturally, I almost forgot they were actors! You fall in love with the 2 Cea's immediately. The free spirit of her Mother was played out brilliantly and the grit of her Grandfather was played by the amazing Robert Carlyle.

The movie also brought to life the good and the bad, the sadness and the beauty of Cea and her mom's relationship. The cinematography was excellent! The scenes of where she grew up in Northern BC were shown beautifully. I really hope there will be a sequel!! There is so much more to tell about her story.

NORTH OF NORMAL is a rare gem, a biopic with a dynamite cast that captivates its audience...from beginning to end.
pacronin2 October 2022
I am bursting with praise for this movie that was rushed in post-production to get it to TIFF audiences on time. I've been trying to tweet, post, insta, or otherwise sing its praises, but it doesn't even appear to have a movie poster yet, let alone a Twitter account.

What is it about female directors that makes their movies so great? Surely, it is the restraint they demonstrate, the lack of clichés, and the ability to empathize with unsympathetic characters. Canadian director, Carly Stone does that with NORTH OF NORMAL, based on Cea Sunrise Person's book of the same name, a coming-of-age true story that is fascinating and charming on so many levels.

What makes North of Normal such a watchable film is that every aspect of the production is impeccable - stellar writing, skillful nuanced directing and beautiful cinematography, extraordinarily well cast, editing that aids the viewer's journey, and strong, moving performances by the entire cast. The word is definitely 'nuanced.'

I think an epilogue at the movie's end would be a great addition as the director seems to have assumed that Cea's story is well-known. Who knows? Maybe it will be there when you get to see it.

In this adaptation to the big screen I fell in love all over again with the story and the character who drew me to the pages and now to the theatre.
HiBrooks4 October 2022
In the end there is no better test for the adaption of a memoir to the big screen than to fall in love all over again with the story and the character who drew me to the pages and now to the theatre. The truth is though, we all know there is also no greater fear than the twisted sense of anticipation and skepticism (re: fear) when one of our favourite stories comes to life, let alone one that is the incredible true story, of this incredible little girl, who once up on a time came of age in so many ways too soon in the wild of the Rockies just down the road from right here, a story that Cea Sunrise Person painstakingly dragged to the page and shared with the world herself in her acclaimed memoir North of Normal.

In a room full of strangers at the Calgary International Film Festival Premier of "North of Normal Movie", a show of hands during the introduction reminded me just how very many of us had come after reading Cea's memoirs, her first book being inspiration for the movie. I looked around the room and wondered if any of the other middle aged viewers, so many with sons or daughters like mine, had hippy parents like mine who literally escaped from cities into the wild off the grid in the 1970's, who let them run barefoot and wild, and had come for a 90 minute escape into the past. It didn't take long to escape. From the Ernie and Bert striped shirts, to the cut off jean shorts, to the hair and the glasses and the old pickups and Grey Hound Buses, right down to the pedestal ash tray on the porch, the relentless level of detail and authenticity of the entire film immediately transported us all back in time.

When I first heard of the movie I wondered very seriously if anyone could ever capture the depth of Cea's first hand story and the connections that so many of us share as parents and in reminiscences of our childhood selves? Is it even possible? Truthfully, to be blunt I was doubtful and I mostly just hoped for Cea's sake it wouldn't suck, but from the opening scenes with childhood Cea running in the woods, I was lost with her. I was there in my bare feet crunching leaves and I knew North of Normal Movie was / is more than a trip back in time, it is an immersive journey that takes us back and forth in time and space, from early childhood escapes, to awkward teenaged trials, to the haunting reminders of childhood traumas and lost voices. It is a window and a mirror to an all too recent age where the loss of innocence and bluntly parentless upbringing of our sometimes lost generation actually comes back to life.

The truth is, in media res, I was lost in the story and the characters and completely forgot to remember the book. What better compliment can there be to the screenplay adaptation by Alexandra Weir and the vision of Director Carly Stone. The locations and characters were hauntingly familiar and faithful and in a strikingly tangible pace they pulled us closer to the truth, Cea's truth. From the childhood Cea (River Price-Maenpaa), to the immovable Papa Dick (Robert Carlyle - aka "that's exactly how your grandpa looked" to my kids), to Cea's mom (Sarah Gadon) who we love to death but who unforgivably just can't help be anything but a mom, and finally to the teen Cea played so convincingly by Amanda Fix, who so completely enveloped, embraced and embodied the real life Cea, she will now forever be the teen Cea of the memoirs for so many of us.

In the end, well, I won't spoil the ending, but in the end I loved this movie, just like the first time I read Cea's book, but perhaps I was wrong to say that is the greatest compliment to North of Normal Movie. Maybe, just maybe I think, this is a movie that will make so many more want to pick up Cea's book and read more. That is at least, until Cea's second book, Nearly Normal, comes to the big screen.

Outstanding movie, not to be missed!
jxknq11 October 2022
I was so swept away with this movie that it went by much too quickly ! The casting for the characters was perfect ,each one of them so believable and brought their own pathos and poignance whilst still making the audience smile with a warm heart . Amanda Fix portrayal of 14-year-old Cea was incredible,.she absolutely nailed her role with passion ,beauty and vulnerability. The films visuals brought the story I had devoured as a book to life on screen with truthfulness ,tenderness and scope of love from relationships that are unusual yet very real.

I was left wanting to see more of Cea's story!

You have to see this movie
suewick9 October 2022
I was introduced to both of Cea's books at a neighbourhood book club. I've always admired her strength and how she overcame her adversities, so when I saw her story was to be made into a movie, I knew I'd have to see it. I got the opportunity by winning tickets and getting to meet this amazing woman. I don't usually leave reviews but this movie is so beautiful. It's the best movie I have seen all year - one I can't stop thinking about. I was captivated from the very first minute and finished wanting more. Cea's journey takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions but it's her strength that is unforgettable. It's not easy to deal with the subjects of drugs, abuse and abandonment and still have the viewer come away feeling uplifted. This amazing, talented cast of characters makes this happen. I feel honoured to have been given a glimpse into the life of this brave, spunky, beautiful in all ways woman. I highly recommend North of Normal.

A Cinematic Masterpiece
karenazen11 October 2022
This beautiful film captured my heart and promises to take yours on a memorable journey. Such stunning scenery, I felt whisked away with Cea following her on a unique and heartfelt adventure. Carly Stone captures this meaningful story perfectly and shines a light on the unique spirit of Cea herself. A soundtrack that takes you back to the 1970's with so many fond references. Hats off to the young actors portraying the child and adolescent Cea. These were heartfelt performances that stayed with me and realistically portrayed this unique and gripping story. A film that truly does live up to this brilliant book, North of Normal is a must see film!

Gorgeous Depiction of SingleMom+Daughter Life
doctorteresa6 October 2022
Such a stunning, heart-wrenching, artistic and REAL journey into the life of a daughter & her single mom. Impressive capture of an era where women are/were trapped into single parenthood and all its turmoil, when the "other parent" just up & walks away. This capture of the complexity of the deep love of a mother who is endlessly emotionally & financially dependent on inadequate guy after inadequate guy, is tear-jerking, heart-warming, and gut-wrenching. Amazing characters portrayals and beautiful scenery, round off this poetic story. I hope they make a sequel, and spend a bit more time in the wilderness: that's the only part I felt was missing a smidge...!

So loved this film!!!!!!!!
drlindainsantafe13 October 2022
North of Normal was wonderful. Kept me engaged through the entire movie. The actresses that played childhood Cea was amazingly talented as was the actress who played teenage Cea and her mother Michele. After reading North of Normal and the sequel Nearly Normal it was great to see her life story on the big screen.

The actors were perfect for their parts and really drew me in. The scenery was absolutely stunning.

The relationship between Cea and her mother was, needless to say, complicated but through it all I could really see how much Cea's mother loved her. Cea is to be admired by her resilience and determination.

Beautiful from every angle
mmorgan-816827 October 2022
I read Cea Person's memoirs a while ago and was excited when I saw they were going to be made into a movie. I also had my doubts as to whether I would enjoy the movie as much, but I was pleasantly surprised. The actor that plays Michelle, the well intentioned but disastrous mother, let us see her imperfections and mistakes in such an honest way that we love her anyway. The child/teen actors playing Cea were amazing. Their relationship was a complex one and the writers, director and actors captured it all perfectly. This is one of those movies that I would watch over and over and gain different perspective on every time.

Raised by wild
diwood13 October 2022
After reading both Cea Sunrise Person's memoirs (North of Normal and Nearly Normal) published by Harper Collins, I was excited to see the film adaptation.

The movie focussed on the unconventional childhood of a young girl (played exceptionally by two actresses) raised by a family who lived on the fringes of society and often in the wilderness or squats.

With a particular emphasis on the relationship between Cea and her mother Michelle, one can't help but feel the heartbreak of witnessing the role reversal of mother and daughter.

Cea's real life resiliance was played beautifully by Amanda Fix. All the performances in the movie were outstanding and especially that of Robert Carlyle who played Cea's idealistic yet selfish grandfather Papa Dick.

Such an inspiring story!
patricia_finlayson13 October 2022
North of Normal is such a moving and inspirational story. Not only did this movie provide such a stunning backdrop that transports you to the sublime Canadian wilderness, but the phenominal acting to tell this amazing story was oitstanding. I loved the complexity of the relationships; loving and warm, yet heartbreaking and unconventional. Cea's bravery and strength are unwavering throughout her story and it's a journey like no other. Such and incredible acting performance by River Price-Maenpaa who portrated young Cea. Amanda Fix who played Cea as she grew up and Cea's mother played by the outrageously talented Sarah Gadon, communicated the complex and tender but highly complicated relationship masterfully. This movie left me wanting more so I picked up the book again.
