Opioid Epidemic - Nyler Company = Purdue Pharma / Sackler Family IRL
patrickphotoshop8 March 2021
Most of the reviews here are all about the brother-sister relationship (I also obviously don't agree with Frome's couple therapy) but everyone seemed to have overlooked the topic of the opiate crisis. Much of what they show presented with regards to the opioid epidemic and the "Nyler" family is spot-on. Off-screen the real world equivalent of the Nylers are the Sacklers, who own Purdue Pharma and are themselves highly culpable for widespread opioid addition and overdose deaths after spreading propaganda touting the benefits and safety of oxycontin, oxycodone etc in the 90s. A lot of hospitals, art galleries and foundations have a Sackler Wing just as the show mentioned with its Nyler Wing. They are a digusting, profit driven family hiding behind an army of lawyers and doctors with prescription pads. In a lot of ways a legal drug cartel that behave like philanthropists to sugarcoat where they got their money from, and overstep the countless deaths + broken lives they are responsible for.

You shouldn't be surprised...
ClassicsJunkie6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, look at this series' writers room. Their main plot line since the beginning is change and different. The main character (Max) is just that. And it follows through out the seasons and story lines.

In a nutshell: The moment where it was written that Max comes in on his first day as new Medical Director and fires an entire department. That was your first clue (Big. Ass. Clue.) that this show will be shaking viewers up.

It happens repeatedly. Cancer. Georgia dying (very early in a series).

Then to top it off and take this puppy home.

Recognize. Seriously recognize what world we are living in. Especially this era. Change is the new black. Different is the new trend.

Ten years ago. Putting a married same-sex couple was "disgusting". Lil Nas (whatever his name is) is putting human blood in shoes to sell!

But yes, an incestuous couple written solely for the screen. Such a big deal.

Recognize. What's really happening in the world versus a writer's room doing it's job.

Incest is OK if you love each other
earl-5285427 February 2020
The thing to take from this episode is that the heart wants what the heart wants and being brother and sister shouldn't stop you getting married if you love each other. It's a good thing this hospital has an "inclusive" psychiatrist.

No, no, no, no, no
Barry016915 March 2020
There were some great story lines here and some very touching moments, but that other story line ruined the entire episode. Dr. Frome's bullying makes a mockery of therapy and totally changed my thoughts about this character's character.

The shark just got jumped
greglauer16 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Was catching up on episodes I've been keeping on the DVR and already I've been getting tired of the increasingly preachy tone. But going through this one with Iggy endorsing and then facilitating an incestuous relationship...you just jumped the shark and ruined a series that was previously one of my favorites. Yes, the characters did not know they were related until their DNA Test gift, but the minute they knew, the relationship should have been over, like the woman wanted.

They had a perfect opportunity to explore the ethics and other potential complications of widespread anonymous sperm donations and instead went further down the rabbit hole of Iggy's questionable ethics. And then finish that scene with his food struggle...c'mon man!

WTF
ckreutinger-4195826 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly 75% of the episode was fine but what were the writers smoking? Iggy's storyline in this one was disturbing, and not in the "trying to be progressive by being controversial" way. I get excited for this show every week but I don't know if I can watch another episode. What's next, sympathizing ? The couple was not cute. It was sad, yes, but the relationship needed to end. He says he wasn't promoting the relationship but that's exactly what he did when he was pushing the woman to look past the fact that she's been in a relationship with her BROTHER.

Disturbing episode
Dog-River27 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what the writer of this episode was even thinking when they thought, hey let's endorse. It was disturbing on so many levels. The fact that they had Dr. Frome and the fiance (her brother) "bully" that woman into coming around to wanting to remain in a romantic relationship with her brother was disgusting behavior. As a therapist, Dr. Frome was not remaining neutral. Iggy is one of my favourite characters on the show and then they have him act like that. Quite possibly the worst episode of the whole show.

I don't understand why they are trying to say it's okay to marry your half-sibling... Then they try and justify it by saying it's okay if you don't have kids. Gross

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
dale-carol-m18 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This series has left me in tears most episodes, its so uplifting and I really enjoy it, till today!!! I thought it was illegal to marry your sibling and yet here is a 'dr' helping this sister and brother make it ok??? I was horrified!!! The rest of the episode was great but this one section totally floored me to the point where I'm not sure I will watch the rest of the season. What a shame, done for ratings? Well if it was I don't think the producers would like the comments its getting.

Ew! Sibling marriage !!!!
A-I-Shah20 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ew! Is the writer trying to make this normal!? WHY!!! Ok it is heartbreaking that they figure it out very late and this is related to reality ... but still .... you are bot supposed to make it okay you are supposed to make people open to the idea that they might be related somehow and double check it if they are adopted or from a sperm donor ...

WTH

Warning: Spoilers
Are you kidding me. Until this episode this show has been my only favorite medical drama show. For the first time in my life I actually loved a medical drama show BECAUSE it was about medicine and genuinely caring doctors. And then they had to go and ruin it with making incest 'ok'. Nope no never having it

So much wrong
superfox_88810 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show is heartwarming out the wazoo. It's key feature is completely unrealistic storylines with a warm, fuzzy feeling underlying it all.

Then we have this episode.

Incest. One man's mission to end the opioid epidemic. Invalidating a drug trial because someone peeked at data. Closing an ED for no reason.

There's suspending belief, then there's just rubbish. This is, sadly, the epitome of the latter.

Who would have guessed that New Amsterdam would promote
polite-4569226 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Who would have guessed that New Amsterdam would promote incest? Beyond all the other degeneracy New Amsterdam has promoting, it could be a new low that incest was promoted in this episode. It seems it no longer is a medical drama.

Colette8214 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was my favorite medical drama series. Until today. The three stars are for the opi-war which was extraordinary(the story alone goes for a 10). Incest is not ok. Is sick. Is disturbed. Is unethical. Is unacceptable. IS NOT OK.
