Meanwhile, Peyton blocks Nick's funding for his part of the boat; and Edward loses Reese as an employee when she meets a shady character on her father's payroll.—Nat Zee
- As Edward and Veronica return home, he congratulates himself for a job well done, wishing he could see Tom Massick's face as the S.S. Savannah burns, but a message on the answering machine alerts him that Reese went with Nick to her office aboard the riverboat to celebrate. Time to phone 911. Tom, finishing up after overtime, smells smoke, breaks down the door, finds Reese asleep in Nick's arms, fire raging. The phone rings incessantly as Veronica tries to warn them. Tom wakes up Nick, urging him to grab the fire extinguisher. He seizes Reese and carries her in his arms to safety. Edward races to the scene. Fire engines stand by as he arrives. Tom tells him Reese is gone, which he misunderstands, breaking down. Realizing this, Tom has a field day embellishing on gory details, sending Edward on a self-hatred binge from which even Reese's arrival much later at the Burton home can hardly cure him. Meanwhile, Peyton is on the money track again, signing for the cashier's cheque that is Nick's emerald-finding reward. And Terry feigns a back injury to dig himself in at Lane's place. He arranges a fake job offer to get Lane to go with him to New York. Edward, now recovered, tries to get Reese to come and live with him again, and work for his company. Tom heads him off by finding the arsonist and presenting Reese with irrefutable proof of Edward's skullduggery, and she vows that he has had his last chance. Peyton mistakenly believes that Nick has no real money, but he contacts his father's lawyer to dip into his trust fund.
