- A poor young man has to deal with his feelings for a rich girl and the difficulties of this relationship.
- Dé (Thiago Martins) is a boy born and raised in the slums of Cantagalo, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. As a child Dé sees his middle brother Beto get killed by a drug dealer because of a fight at a soccer match in the slum. His older brother, Carlão (Rocco Pitanga), is expelled from the slum and ends up arrested for Dé's fault. Willing to have an honest living, Dé works at a kiosk on Ipanema beach and gets charmed by Nina (Vitória Frate), a rich girl who lives in a building in front of the kiosk.
Carlão comes out of jail by making an illegal deal with some police officers and, as he turned himself a criminal, he intends to dominate Cantagalo slum and kill Beto's murderer, becoming the head of the drug dealers from Cantagalo.
Due to criminal combats to control the slums, Nina's father decides to prohibit her from re-visiting the place, and says he will send her to live in Europe. In spite of that, the lovers plan to travel to the northeast of Brazil and live there. During the farewell party to the couple in the slum given by Carlão , police and bandits come to collect money that Carlão owed them, but he is broke. He then kidnaps Nina. Next morning Evandro (Paulo César Grande) knows about the kidnapping and sends photos of her boyfriend to newspapers as his daughter's kidnapper.
Dé asks his brother for help and finds out that he is his girlfriend's kidnapper. Carlão with a shot to the chest given by Dé, tells them to flee away. They leave the slum and go to the kiosk by the dawn to get the money to travel, but at the moment they get to the place the police and the press are waiting for news in front of Nina's building. They run from the crowd and hide in the kiosk.
The couple plans a way to leave the place. Dé masks his face with his shirt and points the gun to Nina's head, as if he were actually kidnapping her. By the moment the police officer negotiates Dé's surrender, he is shot to the chest. Nina gets desperate, take the gun on the floor and, in anger, shoots against the crowd, being killed by several shots from the police. Both end up dead on Ipanema's sidewalk and surrounded by the press, police and curious people.
