- The Past
A young Clark travels through the Arctic, holding the Sunstone in his hand. The light in it goes out and he wonders what he's supposed to do. He throws the Sunstone into the ice, and it glows. Clark turns, and a vast mountain grows from the ice. Going in, Clark finds the Sunstone hovering in the air and takes it. There's an ice console, and Clark puts the Sunstone on it. Jor-El's hologram appears, and he says that Clark is his son.
Jor-El tells Clark that the Fortress is a place where Clark can learn who he really is away from the prying eyes of the world, and why Clark was sent to Earth from the planet Krypton. The hologram explains that Clark's real name is Kal-El, and his body absorbs sunlight and gains powers.
As Clark grows into adulthood, he learns to fly. He tells Jor-El that he's ready, and Jor-El says that Clark should go and reconnect with the world, open his heart to the humans, and learn why he wants to be their champion.
Clark returns to the Kent farm, where Martha is sweeping the porch. They embrace, and Martha asks Clark if he found what he was looking for. He says that he thinks so, and goes inside. Clark looks around and then tells Martha that he met his Kryptonian father and found out who he really is. He goes to his pod in the barn, and puts the Sunstone into it. He then goes to his room and looks at a yearbook photo of Lana, and goes to see her.
Going into Smallville, Clark sees Lana outside the movie theater. She meets with her date, Kyle, who tells her that he got a job at the fire station. The couple kiss, and Clark sees the engagement ring on Lana's finger.
Clark goes home, and Martha says that she's sorry but that he was gone a long time, and Lana moved on with her life. Martha then gives Clark a costume she made out of his blankets, explaining that she had a dream of Clark flying. She figures that it still needs something on the chest.
Going to Metropolis, Clark looks for an apartment. He hears a car going out of control, puts on his new costume, and stops the car from falling on a boy. The boy thanks Superman and compliments him on his costume. Superman flies back to a phone booth and changes back to his normal clothing, and a passing woman says that a flying man saved a boy but no one saw his face.
A few weeks later, Clark soon makes his way to the Daily Planet and applies for a job with editor-in-chief, Perry White. Perry tells Clark to find him when he has some real-world experience, and Clark says that he just needs a chief. The editor agrees to hire Clark and tells him to try and keep up. They go out, and Perry tells Clark that Lois will show him the ropes. Lois isn't impressed with Clark.
Another reporter tells Lois that the "mystery man" has been seen for the third time that month. Lois says that they need a hero for the city, but Metropolis has systemic problems. She says that someone has been making arson attacks against minority-owned business, and a man in a metal mask and a trenchcoat is apparently responsible. Lois has been reporting on him for months, but her stories have been drowned out by news on the "mystery man".
Clark asks how he can help, and Lois puts him to work helping her on the story. The two of them bond while working on the story, and they narrow the arsonist down to five suspects. Clark tells Lois that she's really good, and she smiles at him. When Clark says that he has to go, Lois asks what the hurry and he says that he just has a quiet night planned. Lois offers to get put in a good word for Clark with Perry, and asks if he wants to be there for the story or the company.
The next day, Clark returns to work and discovers Lois isn't at her desk. The other reporter says that she's following a story about a man who works at a hardware store, Henry Miller. Clark uses his super-hearing to locate Lois confronting Miller, flies there, and blocks the flames as Miller tries to use a flamethrower on her. After Superman and Lois share a look, Superman freezes the flamethrower. Miller tosses grenades into the nearby crowd, and Superman destroys one with his heat vision and catches the other one.
Lois tasers Miller unconscious, and Superman recovers from the blast. When Lois wonders how Superman found her, he says that he used his super-hearing and has been following her story. Superman flies off and Lois tells a bystander that the hero is "Superman". Before he flies of, Superman sees something flicker off to one side.
A year later, Lois rehearses an on-camera interview with Superman. He explains about Krypton was destroyed and he crashed somewhere on Earth. Superman says that he studied every language, and that he stands for truth and justice. Lois' lane generated feedback, and Lois complains to her producer Janet that Superman is giving her the runaround. Janet tells Lois that Superman is into Lois, and Lois says that she's in love with Clark and he's sweet. Lois says that she hasn't told anyone, even Clark, and Janet asks if Superman has super hearing.
Lois goes back and says that it was unprofessional, and Superman says that he'd be offended if she went easy on him.
Clark takes Lois home to see Martha, and Martha says that lots of people in town want to see Lois. They go inside to have lunch, and after lunch Martha tells Clark that Lois is wonderful. Clark says that he brought Lois there to tell her who he really is. Martha warns that there's no going back once he reveals his secret, and hugs him. Lois comes in, and Clark takes her out to the field and shows her that he can fly..
Later back in Metropolis, Clark and Lois kiss in the elevator. Superman eventually proposes to Lois and they get married. On their honeymoon, Clark says that he kept his secret from everyone so that he could tell it to Lois, and they'd have their life together. He wants to tell Jor-El about the wedding, and Lois says that he'll have to wait until after the honeymoon.
Later at the Fortress, Jor-El asks Clark about the wedding and then angrily tells Clark to get out. At the farm, Clark wakes up from his nightmare. Lois comes in and tells Clark that she's pregnant and they're going to be parents. She says that she wants to have a girl, and when they hug Clark has a vision of being at the OBGYN with Lois, learning that they're having twins. Once the OBGYN leaves, Lois wonders if the twin pregnancy has something to do with Clark being a Kryptonian. Clark sees something flickering in the hallway, through the door's window.
When Clark walks away, Lois continues talking as if Clark is in front of him. Clark realizes that reality isn't "real" and finds Morgan outside. The reality changes to when Lois is giving birth to the twins. Morgan is there, and tells Clark that he would never harm a newborn but teenagers, yes.
Superman wakes up in the Fortress, and finds a metal band around his head. Morgan is there, wearing a similar band, and tells Superman that now they can discuss his brother's surrender. Morgan explains that the bands allows the user to navigate the resting mind of another. He follows Superman to the Fortress and learn why Superman betrayed his Kryptonian heritage.
Morgan says that Superman could have been a great man but Earth dragged him down with its mediocrity. He threatens to reveal to the world that Superman has a family. The hologram of Jor-El appears and tells Superman not to listen to Morgan, and Morgan says that Jor-El corrupted their mother.
Superman says that he talked to Lara, and she still believes there is good in Morgan. Morgan tells Superman that he's his true family, and asks Superman to join him of his own free will. Superman refuses, and Morgan destroys the Sunstone. Jor-El fades away, and Superman attacks Morgan. Morgan beats him and says that all his life he dreamed of having a family, but Superman rejected him. Once Superman is knocked unconscious, Morgan tells him that it didn't have to be the way it turned out and walks away.
Kyle is recovering at his home, and Lois is there with Kyle and Lana. Lana warns that the townspeople will want answers, and Kyle figures that they'll blame him. Lana asks Lois where Morgan went, and Lois figures that he'll turn up soon.
I the next room, At the Kent house, Jonathan, Jordan, and Sarah discuss what happened to Kyle. Sarah figures that families are always to lying to each other, and thanks the brothers for not lying to her. She asks for a moment alone with Jordan, and Jonathan leaves. Jordan says that he was scared to tell Sarah the truth. She kisses him and says that she doesn't want to be just friends anymore. Jordan agrees and they kiss again.
As the Kents leave, Kyle apologizes to Lois for how he treated her earlier and says that he's glad she's part of Smallville.
Lois, Jordan, and Jonathan drive home, and Morgan lands nearby and says that Superman won't be there soon so he came to visit. He says that he left Superman a crumpled heap in the Fortress, and Jordan unleashes his heat vision on Morgan. Morgan blocks it with his own heat vision and knocks Jordan back, and tells Lois that it's beyond the point where he can let any of them leave.
As Morgan prepares to kill them, Superman flies down and says that he'll do anything Morgan wants as long as Morgan leaves his family alone. Morgan tells Superman to submit, and Superman does so. Superman tells Lois that he needed more time, and Morgan flies him away.
Morgan flies Superman to his desert base.
