Before later movies characterized by their muddy CGI and digital collage of actors, the Marvel Cinematic Universe actually pulled off some cool filmmaking tricks with the help of special effects. Case in point: the puny, pre-serum version of Steve Rogers fans of the then-new series saw in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger." According to The Wrap, the movie achieved Steve's original look via a combination of strategies, and scenes set before his transformation into the Cap we know were actually shot three times.
In one version of the scene, Chris Evans would stand in place and deliver his lines. In another, a scrawnier stand-in — "Atonement" and "Merlin" actor Leander Deeny — would perform in his place. In a third variation, the scene was reportedly filmed without any actor. This gave the effects team tons of footage to work their magic on. While productions typically shoot out of order, The Wrap...

Even though many great period TV shows have come out lately, half of them dip into romance in far too much detail for anyone to want to watch. If you're still traumatized by the infamous Bridgerton ladder scene, or just want to spend family night watching a period piece, check out the list below.
These 10 TV series prove that there is a way to present romance, intrigue, humor, and drama in a way that everyone can enjoy.
North and South (2004)
Although this story is romantic, there is a great emphasis on the historical background. The main character, Margaret Hale, is a southerner who is forced to move with her family to a northern city that has already been taken over by the new wave of industrialism. She must adapt to new customs and watch the world change before her eyes.

As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.
Review: Ewan McGregor is a singular talent. The acclaimed actor can sing, share the screen with Winnie the Pooh, fight Darth Vader, and play a convincing heroin addict. He has also proven himself adept at sharing the screen with family members.

Intimacy coordinators, basically delicate choreographers for sex scenes, are not new to Hollywood productions. But this may be a first.
For the Paramount+ with Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow,” in which Ewan McGregor plays a Russian aristocrat banished to a bleak hotel room during the early days of the Soviet Union, the actor told Britain’s Radio Times that the production still used an intimacy coordinator for one romantic sequence, even though his scene partner was Mary Elizabeth Winstead, his wife of two years.
“We did have an intimacy coordinator!” McGregor said, when it was suggested he probably didn’t need one. “It’s still necessary, because it’s also about the crew, and it’s odd to be naked in front of people, it’s odd to be intimate in front of the camera. If you were doing a dance scene, you’d have a choreographer. It...

Chita Rivera, the sultry singer, dancer and actress who commanded the Broadway stage for more than a half-century, has died. She was 91.
Rivera died peacefully in New York on Tuesday, following a brief illness, her daughter, Lisa Mordente, shared in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
Known for her long, sleek legs, smoldering green eyes and lusty singing voice, the two-time Tony Award winner originated some of musical theater’s most iconic characters.
When West Side Story bowed in 1957, it was Rivera singing about life in America as the fiery Puerto Rican transplant Anita. As Rose Grant, the long-suffering girlfriend of songwriter Albert Peterson, Rivera received top billing over Dick Van Dyke in 1960’s Bye Bye Birdie. In 1975, she made the stage sizzle with “All That Jazz” as Velma Kelly in Chicago. And the 1993 musical adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman put her in the spotlight as the sexy Spider Woman.

Chita Rivera, the beloved Broadway star of West Side Story, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman, died today in New York following a brief illness. She was 91.
Her death was announced by her daughter, Lisa Mordente, who said that Rivera died peacefully.
One of America’s foremost Latina artists, Rivera was a groundbreaker, riveting critics and audiences alike with seminal performances of such soon-to-be Broadway standards as “America” and “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story and “All That Jazz” from Chicago. She was among the most nominated performers in Tony Award history – she earned 10 nominations, winning twice (for The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman) and receiving the 2018 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Rivera rocketed to fame in 1953 with Guys and Dolls, then cemented her stature as a Broadway leading lady in 1954 with Can-Can, Mr. Wonderful in 1956 and, in 1957, the role that...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has just landed a big sci-fi film package it is setting a global theatrical release for in Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Oscar-nominated producer Charles Roven. I understand the deal closed in the past week with a spring start of production planned.
The project puts Pratt back in business with Amazon, which acquired his Skydance movie The Tomorrow War from Paramount and turned into a big Prime Video hit during the pandemic. He also has the series The Terminal List on Prime. The movie also reps a reunion for Pratt and Bekmambetov, who both worked on the latter’s 2008 Hollywood directorial debut Wanted, a $342 million-grossing, Oscar-nominated blockbuster based on Mark Millar’s comic book.
Written by Marco van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy is set in the near future when capital crime has increased. The pic follows a detective (Pratt) who...

There are literally hundreds of films and TV shows about or featuring King Arthur going back well over a century – there are silent films, musicals, animated films, comedies, dramas. You name it, there is a King-Arthur-themed version of it. There are not a small number of “Best of…” lists floating around the internet as well. But how do you know which of the recommendations is really going to scratch your King Arthur-shaped itch?
MGM+’s new series about King Arthur, The Winter King, is a combination of gritty historical fiction and “low” fantasy. It is also fairly grim and violent. Netflix’s new techno chiller T.I.M. follows a career-conscious woman called Abi as she moves into a new smart home with her seemingly not-very-trustworthy husband Paul. Even as she tries to make an impact with her new employer, he decides to gift her a “Technologically Integrated Manservant” (T.I.M.) to fuss around the house and help her out while she’s busy at work. T.I.M. might be the creepiest robot version of Alexa possible!
It’s not long before T.I.M. is taking it upon himself to do more than re-up groceries and sweep the floors, becoming obsessed with Abi and having a marked distaste for her formerly wayward husband. Things soon spiral out of control in the spotless smart home while Abi is distracted by the wild demands of her boss. Can T.I.M. be stopped from doing something deadly before it’s too late?...

Welsh actor Alexander Vlahos, known for his roles in TV series such as “Merlin,” “Outlander” and “Versailles,” is set to play a British ornithologist who, during a field trip to Sicily, gets involved in more than mere birdwatching.
Shooting is underway in Sicily on the indie drama “Hearts of Salt,” the first feature by London-based line producer Rosa Russo. The passion project is structured as a three-way co-production between Italy, the U.K. and Tunisia, with shooting also planned in the North African country. Tunisia will serve as a second location besides the Italian island.
Though plot details are scarce, “Hearts of Salt” will see Vlahos — who will soon be seen opposite Lindsay Lohan in the Netflix rom-com “Irish Wish” — arrive in Sicily on a mission to study the effects of climate change on bird migrations. However, the ornithologist will soon have to abandon his role as a detached observer...

There are a million reasons to love Anthony Head, from his time as the librarian/watcher Rupert Giles in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to King Uther Pendragon in "Merlin," to the Prime Minister in "Little Britain." If you're on the younger side, though, you might have missed another wildly popular project that Head did, both in the U.K. and later in the U.S. It wasn't a film or a TV show. It was a series of coffee commercials.
Gather 'round, children, as I explain TV commercials. We had to watch them. We had no choice and no way to fast forward. That means that when a commercial came along with two insanely attractive people (Head and Sharon Maughan) who flirt over a borrowed container of coffee, we were riveted. This wasn't some idiot yelling about low prices on stereos or preternaturally adult children giving the thumbs up over a plastic toy.

While there are many new movies and shows coming to Netflix in December to look forward to, the streamer unfortunately has to cut some great films this month as well. Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” along with “A Little Princess” will be leaving this month, among many others.
Oscar-winner “Blue Jasmine” starring Cate Blanchette will also depart in December. The “Men in Black” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise films have a ticking clock as well, not to mention “A Cinderella Story” starring Hillary Duff, Chad Michael Murray and Jennifer Coolidge. Though Daniel Craig’s reprisal of Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion” arrives on Netflix on Dec. 23, one of Craig’s five James Bond films, “Casino Royale” will leave Netflix on Dec. 31.

34 years after the fantasy film Willow was released – created by Star Wars’ George Lucas and starring Harry Potter’s Warwick Davis – it’s being revived in a new Disney+ series serving as a sequel to the film, with Davis once again playing the titular role.
International fans of the show likely most associate Davis with his fantasy roles – not just in Star Wars and Harry Potter, but Merlin, The Chronicles of Narnia, and more – but may not know that he also presents one of the most fiendishly difficult UK quiz shows, Tenable.
Davis has been the host of Tenable since it launched in 2016, and it’s now had six series on ITV, the latest of which finished airing in October.

The first short story in Andrzej Sapkowski's epic saga was simply titled "The Witcher." It was printed in the Polish fantasy and sci-fi magazine Nowa Fantastyka in 1986, as part of a contest. Sapkowski didn't win the top prize then, but readers were attracted to Geralt of Rivia's struggle to free a princess from an unfair curse. That encouraged Sapkowski, and in 1994, "Blood of Elves" became the first full novel about the mutant monster-hunter's trials. Gradually, Geralt's popularity trickled into the worldwide consciousness, helped along by the 2007 video game adaptation by CD Project.
Geralt's (portrayed by Henry Cavill) first adventure is the third episode of Netflix's "The Witcher." Titled "Betrayer Moon," the myth of the striga becomes a showcase for Geralt's gruff brand of empathy. In his world, monsters can't be allowed to roam free, but when he can, he saves them from their fates. The world of "The Witcher" is often cruel,...

Martin Short is represented by two of the whopping 17 Emmy nominations for Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” He is one of the nominated producers in the Best Comedy Series race, but his Best Comedy Actor bid is even more enticing. That’s because despite an impressive career in television, Short has never won an Emmy for acting. Perhaps his performance as flamboyant theater director and newly minted true-crime podcaster, Oliver Putnam, will finally earn this funnyman a statue to honor his work as a performer.
With the addition of two bids this year, Short has amassed an impressive 14 Emmy nominations, winning twice. He first entered the Emmy race in 1983 where he earned five writing nominations for “Sctv Network 90,” winning one of them. He won again in the Best Variety Special category for hosting “A Tribute to Mel Brooks” in 2014. He would pick up a pair of nominations...

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. Bridgerton season one arrived on December the 25th 2020 like a highly decorated Christmas gift. Unwrapped, it was a perfect confection of untaxing indulgence, romance and escapism. It told the story of Daphne and Simon, a debutante beauty and an emotionally repressed Duke who teamed up to get everybody off their backs, and who ended up getting on their own backs, and fronts, and sides, and – if I remember this correctly – halfway up the stairs and possibly at one point, a ladder? It was all a marvellous distraction from the real world, with excellent casting that threw open the fusty, cobwebbed door of racially homogeneous period drama to revitalise an over-familiar world.
Now it’s back for season two, with a new romantic plot-line and a bunch of new characters. Here’s who we’ll be meeting across the eight episodes, plus the major returning cast being welcomed back.

Exclusive: Michael Matthews is set to direct Disney’s Merlin, an adaptation of T.A. Barron’s novel series where King Arthur’s wizardry mentor is at the center of the story. Ridley Scott, who directed the 20th Century Medieval pic The Last Duel, which bows today in theaters, was attached to direct at one point but parted ways due to his busy schedule. Sources say the film is still in early development with Disney’s live-action team.
Gil Netter is producing from with the latest draft by Chris Weitz.
Based on the Barron books, the series followed the origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur. While several films have focused on the King Arthur legend, the only high-profile story to focus specifically on the story of Merlin was the NBC miniseries Merlin that starred Sam Neill.

When big changes come to Doctor Who it’s the Doctor who grabs all the headlines. That, after all, is showbusiness: children don’t ask for bedsheets bedecked with the faces of the show’s writing or production team. It’s the showrunner – much more than anyone else, including the actor playing the lead role – upon whom the fate and fortunes of the show rest. They decide everything from the look, feel and tone of the seasons, to the thrust and arc of the narrative, to who writes, directs and stars – from the smallest bit-part to the Doctor themselves. The buck stops with them, in other words, and a showrunner can very much make or break an era.
So while speculation rages about who will take on the mantle of the 14th Doctor, it’s Chris Chibnall‘s replacement as showrunner who will ultimately carry the weight of the universe on their back.
