One of the best recent rule changes the Television Academy recently made was the 2020 decision to expand the Drama and Comedy series categories to include eight nominees, regardless of the number of entries. But if the goal of the Primetime Emmys is to be reflective of the shows that most engaged viewers and voters alike throughout the TV season, it needs to now go one step further. The TV Academy needs to expand the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category to eight nominees as well.
In the decade since they have re-split the Limited Series and TV Movie categories there have been plenty of winners that were a cultural moment, from “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story” to “Big Little Lies” to “Watchmen,” but these event series were not as common an occurrence. Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened, an event that has had ramifications to the television schedule still present today.

Did you know that there was a miniseries in the spring of 2022 about the Watergate scandal that starred Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Sean Penn? No? Okay, did you know that there was a miniseries last March about the WeWork scandal starring Oscar winners Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway? No again? Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired worldwide rights to “Daddy,” a sci-fi film that will be released in 2024.
The news comes as Anchor Bay is being relaunched after Umbrelic Entertainment chiefs Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz bought the company’s trademark. Anchor Bay was included in Starz’s 2016 sale to Lionsgate. Under Zambeck and Katz, Anchor Bay is looking to release genre films and cult favorites.
In the case of “Daddy,” the movie was co-written and co-directed by Neal Kelley and Jono Sherman in their feature debut. It stars Yuriy Sardarov (“Chicago Fire”), Jacqueline Toboni (“The L Word: Generation Q”), Pomme Koch (“WeCrashed“) and Britt Baron (“Glow”).
The film is set in a dystopian society where the state has the power to determine who can and cannot father children. Four men attend a government-mandated retreat in the remote mountains of California. When they arrive, there’s no guide or instructions waiting for them.

The growing pantheon of films and TV series inspired by podcasts continues apace with such noteworthy spinoffs as “Homecoming,” “The Dropout” and “WeCrashed” leading the pack.
It doesn’t seem so common in the Spanish language but Spanish podcast producer TrueStory is hoping to change that. The award-winning three-year-old company, operating from the U.S. and Spain, has inked a pact with Spanish production companies Kowalski Films (box office hit “Ocho Apellidos Vascos”) and Feelgood Media (Icíar’s Bollaín’s “Maixabel”) to co-create a podcast of actual events that can later be adapted into audiovisual formats.
To date, titles adapted from Spanish-language podcasts are few, although some have emerged in recent years, led by “El gran apagón” from Podium Podcast, which inspired the Movistar Plus+ series “Offworld” (“Apagón”); “El crimen de la guardia urbana” on Netflix, adapted from Carlos Porta’s podcast “Crims”; and “XRey,” the podcast about former Spanish...

If you’ve turned on a television in 2023, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered a male tech billionaire with a penchant for breaking the rules. On “Succession,” there was Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), the Swedish maverick who rendered the titular question moot by swallowing Waystar Royco whole. “The Morning Show” featured Paul Marks (Jon Hamm), the aerospace magnate who flirted with both Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy and acquiring her employer. FX’s “A Murder at the End of the World” included Andy Ronson (Clive Owen), the mysterious genius whose Icelandic retreat takes a deadly turn.
All these characters are composites, with elements of multiple real-life oligarchs with an outsized influence on world affairs. Matsson has shades of Daniel Ek, Scandinavia’s most famous entrepreneur and the fellow proprietor of a streaming service; Marks using a morning show to promote his privately run rocket launch directly invokes Michael Strahan...

Anne Hathaway is reflecting on how she was told when she was young that she would only be successful until she hit a certain age.
In an interview with Porter Magazine, the actress opened up about her decades-long career and major fashion moments of the last year, at the hand of stylist Erin Walsh.
“When I started out [in this industry] as a child, I was warned that my career would fall off a cliff at the age of 35, which is something I know a lot of women face,” Hathaway told the publication. “The thing that has evolved during [that time] is that more women are having careers deeper into their lives, which I think is fantastic.”
However, she acknowledged there is still progress to be made.
“Obviously, it doesn’t mean we should have a ticker-tape parade – someone said this to me the other day: ‘There’s so much to be proud of, and...

Hilarity and pathos intertwine in this likable comedy as the smartphone creators go loopy with wealth – and slack-jawed when the iPhone spoils the party
Here is a punchy Canadian comedy-drama in that burgeoning true-life genre which could loosely be called Tech Startup Hubris; we’ve seen Dumb Money (about GameStop), WeCrashed (about WeWork), and The Beanie Bubble (about the bizarre 90s web-driven tulip-style craze for Beanie Babies). The great ancestor of them all is naturally David Fincher’s The Social Network, about Facebook, with its propulsive script by Aaron Sorkin. This film is a fictionally souped-up account of the steep rise and sudden fall of the BlackBerry, the handset device that towards the end of the 00s was so ubiquitous and addictive among the white-collar classes it was known as the “Crackberry”.
But then Steve Jobs unveiled his iPhone, and the BlackBerry executives suddenly looked like a bunch of brontosauruses...

[Editor’s note: Anne Hathaway received a SAG-AFTRA waiver to participate in this interview for “She Came to Me.”]
“Oh, gosh, I have been fearing this moment,” Anne Hathaway said. The Oscar-winning actress is referring to being asked about playing a psychiatrist in back-to-back independent films, “Eileen” and “She Came to Me” who — in each feature — lets out a cathartic, instantly iconic scream in pivotal dramatic moments, sure to be excerpted by the internet (and adoring gay fans like this one).
In Rebecca Miller’s eccentric relationship comedy “She Came to Me,” Hathaway plays Dr. Patricia Jessup-Lauddem, a hyper-organized, Ocd-tending New York psychiatrist whose desire to achieve her “most uncluttered space” leads her on the path to becoming a nun. In William Oldroyd’s darker queer noir “Eileen,” she’s the elegant blond-headed prison counselor Rebecca St. John, whose rebellious air allures younger, impressionable secretary Eileen, played by Thomasin McKenzie.

These days, it seems like TV and film alike can’t get enough of the past; specifically, the very, very recent past. Shows based on true crime cases and extremely buzzy scandals flood streaming services; you only need to look at 2022, when “WeCrashed” and “Super Pumped” dramatized boardroom dramas at WeWork and Uber three years after they happened, and “The Dropout” depicted Elizabeth Holmes’ crimes while the woman was awaiting sentencing. Movie theaters meanwhile, hosted “She Said,” a film about the 2017 investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual assault that came out while Weinstein was in the middle of his second trial regarding his crimes. A common refrain from some about these projects was, by depicting scandals and events that were so recent and so current in the public consciousness, they were “too soon” to say something meaningful about them.

Set in 1950s America, the show – adapted from Bonnie Gamus’ bestselling book – centres around Elizabeth Zott (Larson), a brilliant scientist who finds herself fired from her lab when a board of men in suits get spooked by the idea that “a pretty lab tech” may be on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough. And so, when the down-on-her-luck dreamer is presented with the chance to host her own primetime cookery show, Supper At Six, Zott sees the gig as an opportunity to educate America’s women...

Brie Larson has delivered countless phenomenal performances throughout her career, but something tells us we're getting her finest work on Lessons in Chemistry.
Apple TV+ shared the official trailer for the highly-anticipated limited series on Thursday morning, showing Larson as Elizabeth Zott.
Zott is a scientist whose life is upended when, on the cusp of discovering something great, a patriarchal society puts her career on hold.
You can tell from the official trailer that this has a profound effect on Elizabeth because the first half focuses on her trying to make a significant breakthrough.
Hearing that everything you've worked for is being taken away from you must be one of the worst feelings in the world, and just when Elizabeth is trying to bounce back following the controversial decision, she gets quite the offer.
She's offered the job as a host of a TV cooking show, and while she's apprehensive at first,...

Anne Hathaway has no fashion regrets.
The “Devil Wears Prada” actress answered 7 Questions for a Vogue YouTube clip posted this week; one of them being whether she had an outfit she regretted wearing.
Hathaway insisted, “I’m not big on holding things with regret … But in terms of outfits, whatever! It’s all fun, it’s great.”
She added, “Even if it’s terrible, it’s still kind of great.”

Hathaway — who is certainly no stranger to the fashion world — might not have red carpet regrets, but she did admit, “I do regret when I show up at a place and I’m overdressed.”
She continued to say how she once landed on a “worst dressed list,” but still thinks the outfit she wore — without revealing which one it was — was “very nice.

Workplace dramas are all the rage right now, thanks to films like “Blackberry” and shows likes “Severance,” “The Consultant,” “WeCrashed,” and “Industry.” But who paved the way for works like that? That’s right, Don Draper and “Mad Men,” a series that remains one of the highlights of 21st-century TV. So it’s comforting, in a way, to see Jon Hamm back in a cubicle for “Corner Office,” a new dark comedy hitting theaters and Digital/On Demand next month.

"They don't care about you! You're a number in a column on a spreadsheet...!" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an indie film called Corner Office, a workplace comedy in the same vein as Office Space and "Severance" with a few tricks up its sleeves. There's been many of these corporate-work-sucks series recently, such as "The Consultant" and "Glamorous" and "WeCrashed" and "Industry", along with all the classics like "The Office". This premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival, and played at the Raindance & Fort Lauderdale Film Fests. In this office satire, Jon Hamm plays Orson, a straight-laced employee at a big, generic corporation who discovers a blissfully empty corner office to get away from his colleagues. But why does this seem to upset them so much? What is really going on? Starring Danny Pudi, Christopher Heyerdahl, Allison Riley, Shawn Macdonald, and Sarah Gadon. That is one magnificent mustache on Hamm,...

Love is a purely human emotion that can’t be faked — such is the theme at the center of the first trailer for Cory Finley’s “Landscape With Invisible Hands,” released Tuesday.
The film is based on the book by M.T. Anderson and, per the official synopsis, it takes place years into a benevolent occupation of Earth by an alien species. “When 17-year-old artist Adam Campbell (Asante Blackk) and new girlfriend Chloe Marsh (Kylie Rogers) discover the Vuvv are particularly fascinated with human love and will pay for access to it, they decide to livestream their budding romance to make extra cash for themselves and their families. Life is good, for a while, until the flame of their teenage love fizzles out and they’re forced to make very different, absurdly life-altering sacrifices for their families.”
The trailer looks like a quirky romantic comedy, albeit with an alien invasion in the middle of it.

Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry, a chronicle of the titular device from invention to obsolescence, arrives in theaters at the nexus of two cinematic trends. On the one hand, miniseries like The Dropout and WeCrashed locate a kind of schadenfreude at watching corporations collapse due to criminality or corruption, respectively, and the capitalistic imperative of growth at all costs. On the other, there are films like Air and Tetris that leverage familiarity with consumer products to elevate brand-building into a newfangled IP adaptation.
BlackBerry is both and neither. Yes, it’s a tech origin story, albeit with far more modesty befitting the founders from Waterloo, Ontario who sought to resolve immediate inconveniences with the mobile product rather than revolutionize communication. The “Dungeons & Dragons” live-action series at Paramount+ has found its showrunner, Variety has confirmed.
Drew Crevello will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series, which was ordered at the streamer in January.
Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote the pilot for the series and will direct the first episode. Paramount+ has given the show an eight-episode order. The series is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne serving as the lead studio. Exact plot details, including what elements of the “Dungeons & Dragons” canon will be included, are being kept under wraps.
This will mark Crevello’s first time running a series solo. He most recently co-created and served as co-showrunner for the Apple limited series “WeCrashed.” He also helped to develop films like “X-Men: First Class” and “Deadpool” during his time as a film executive.
He is repped by UTA and Anonymous Content.

Penned and directed by Vuk Lungulov-Klotz, “Mutt” world premiered at Sundance where it won a Special Jury Acting Award for Lio Mehiel. It went on to have its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.
Described as an emotional drama overlapping past, present and future, “Mutt” follows Feña, a young trans man bustling through life in New York City. The intersection of late-stage capitalism and late-stage Peak TV has made prophets of people normally fixated on profits.
It would be borderline madness if, on a weekly basis, the Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon and Apple were to send shareholders an email with the subject line: “The End Is Nigh.” But the television industry, which has normally explored issues of class with the same skittishness it reserves for religion, has started to treat the economic realities of our American experiment with far more pessimism than you would expect.
The irony is plain: These content producers/unlikely doomsday preachers are putting out a steady stream of shows about the corrosive impact of a system that treats workers as interchangeable cogs existing only to fatten the bottom line; at the same time, they’re raising subscription prices on loyal customers and killing off completed productions that employed hundreds for tax write-offs.

“Rabbit Hole” stars Kiefer Sutherland as a corporate espionage consultant who must go on the run after being framed for murder by a shadowy but powerful group, a character that is used to being on the receiving end of punches, quite unlike the character he’s best known for on “24.”
The Paramount+ series pairs Sutherland with “Crazy, Stupid Love,” “This is Us” and “WeCrashed” writer-directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. When they pitched him on a series that’s a throwback to ’70s conspiracy thrillers “Three Days of the Condor” and “Marathon Man” and “The Parallax View,” he was fully on board. “I’m so lucky that they called me first,” Sutherland told TheWrap ahead of the series premiere on March 26.
“24” fans will be pleased to see the actor back in thriller territory, but his “Rabbit Hole” character John Weir is very different from Jack Bauer. For one thing, it...

ABC‘s Alaska Daily is approaching the season 1 finale, and the big question remains: Who killed Gloria Nanmac? The Alaskan government believes they got their guy, but Eileen Fitzgerald, Roz Friendly, and all of us sitting at home know that Toby Crenshaw is innocent. So the reporters returned to the drawing board in Alaska Daily Season 1 Episode 10, which led them back to a familiar face — Ezra Fisher.

Alaska Daily took a three-month hiatus, meaning some details from the show’s first six episodes are a bit fuzzy. So, we figured we would recap Ezra Fisher’s story from the first half of Alaska Daily to spark viewers’ memories.
The show introduced Ezra at the end of episode 4 when Eileen and Roz gained access to the unredacted version of Gloria’s original case file.
