The Sundance Festival reveals the state of the indie film market, and 2017 will be remembered as the year of Amazon Studios and Netflix. And given the festival’s robust TV and Vr programs,, which were dominated by Google and Facebook/Oculus, there’s further digital disruption ahead.
According to one indie distributor, Sundance 2017’s valuations and sales are almost a third higher than last year. Put the same titles into the Sundance market two years ago, and they would have sold for far less. That’s because Netflix and Amazon Studios on the narrative side are dramatically driving up prices. “It’s just ridiculous what the digital guys are doing to the marketplace,” said one veteran indie CEO. “‘The Big Sick’ is a great little movie but it’s a $4 million -$6 million buy. There’s no logic to this model.”
However, Sundance has always been about the haves and the have-nots.

The 9-year-old actor attended the 2017 People's Choice Awards with his This Is Us co-stars, Chrissy Metz and Chris Sullivan, and his mom, Najah Chavis, who documented her boy's big night in photos and on Instagram. And from the look of things, he had a blast!

Two new films have just been added to this year’s Sundance Film Festival: Drake Doremus’ “Newness” and Banks Tarver, Ted Bourne and Mary Robertson’s “Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time.” The former marks Doremus’ fourth film to premiere in Park City after “Douchebag,” “Like Crazy” and “Breathe In,” while the latter continues Sundance’s tradition of ultra-timely political documentaries.

Nicholas Hoult, Laia Costa, Danny Huston and Courtney Eaton star in “Newness,” which the program notes describe thusly: “In contemporary Los Angeles, two millennials navigating a social media–driven hookup culture begin a relationship that pushes both emotional and physical boundaries.” Mark Halperin, John Heilemann and Mark McKinnon feature in “Trumped,” meanwhile, which follows its subject’s unlikely election last November.

As the Summer starts to fade, the multiplex looks again to sports films, those (like the “sport” of movie viewing) which are set indoors, away from the harsh cold winds. We’re not talking hockey or basketball, but rather the “mano y mano” battle that seems almost tailor-made for movies, boxing. Of course, there are many times when the boxing flick has been mixed with other genres. Just last year we had a boxing/ family tear-jerker with Southpaw and a boxing/ fantasy/ franchise-reboot Creed (it squeezed a few tears from audiences, too). This time out (perhaps to be an early Oscar contender), we’re seeing a pugilistic biography, a mix that goes back to the dawn of cinema. The 1940’s had Gentleman Jim, and the 50’s had Paul Newman as Rocky Marciano in Somebody Up There Likes Me. The greatest true-life boxing biopic may be 1980’s Raging Bull with an Oscar-winning turn by Robert DeNiro.

Credit wars are a fact of Hollywood life that’s rarely laid bare. Those involved are often intimidated by the possible consequences, and the backstories aren’t simple; there’s the question of whether they’ll be believed, or if anyone really has the patience to hear them out.

Trying her hand at the dystopian film genre, Kristen Stewart stars in the forthcoming movie “Equals” and there’s a brand new trailer now online.
Also starring Nicholas Hoult, the story takes place in a future society where human emotions have been eliminated. Two forbidden lovers must hide their relationship from the overreaching government, which has made romance illegal.
Drake Doremus directed the project, from a script written by Nathan Parker. “Equals” still doesn’t have a Stateside release date, so stay linked to the GossipCenter for further updates.

And that's how it's done. "Game of Thrones" Season 5, Episode 8, "Hardhome" just dropped the mic in a serious way -- and if you were bored by this one, check your pulse: You might be one of those (un)dead people at Hardhome. You'd have to be.
As Stefon would put it, this episode had everything -- perfect lay-down-the-law speeches from Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, who just met and decided to team up; Arya basically turning into 00Stark; Sansa finally learning that Theon Greyjoy did not kill Bran and Rickon Stark (Rickon, where are you?!); Jorah Mormont continuing to rival Sansa for most tortured character; Cersei Lannister still awaiting her rock bottom; and the most exciting zombie battle "The Walking Dead" never staged. Jon Snow took on a White Walker, and even though Ghost wasn't on hand to play hero this time, Longclaw was. (Pause to thank late Lord Commander...

With the possible exception of the Black Panther, no other black franchise has garnered as much “it’s going to be a major movie or TV show” hype within the fan rumor mill than Static Shock. Finally the Black Panther is going to happen. As for Static Shock … kinda.
In 2018 the Black Panther movie will be released from what is now the best superhero moviemaker bar none, Marvel Studios. Static will make his way to the Internet as part of Warner Bros’ Digital arm later this year.
I find that rather disappointing.
More than any other black property, Static pretty much already owns the Internet. The massive amount of love Static has on the net is nothing short of extraordinary. In the 22 years since Static burst on the scene the admiration for the character has only grown and at no point shows signs of waiving.

Two of the hottest young actors working today, Game of Thrones‘s Emilia Clarke and X-Men star Nicholas Hoult, have just boarded Go Down Together, Michael Sucsy’s take on iconic American bank robbing couple, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.
The project has a script by Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air) and David Auburn (Proof), who adapted the film from Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde, a non-fiction book by Jeff Guinn. Described as a “revisionist take” on the two young lovers who robbed banks across the Depression-era South in the 1930s, killing at least seven people along the way, Go Down Together has been in the works for several years, but now that two stars are attached, it looks primed to move forward quickly.

Four new specialized/independent releases from diverse backgrounds showed initial strength this weekend. Two of these -- "Cesar Chavez" (Pantelion/Lionsgate) and "The Raid 2" (Sony Pictures Classics) -- are intended for wider release (the former opened at 664 theaters mainly targeted to Mexican-American audiences). Two others -- "Finding Vivian Maier" (IFC) and "Mistaken for Strangers" (Abramorama) -- are documentaries focusing, as have so many hits in the medium, on aspects of the creative process, and seem headed to decent or better art-house success, though theatrically limited by both being available now on Video on Demand. Three films of note -- the initial weekend of Drake Doremus' "Breathe In" (Cohen Media) and the second stanzas of Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac Vol. 1" (Magnolia, also on Video on Demand, as is Vol. 2 already, which heads to theaters next Friday) and "Anita" (Samuel Goldwyn) -- opted not to reveal their grosses. Two romantic films just in time for Valentine.s! First we have .Winter.s Tale. starring Colin Farrell and Jessica Brown Findlay as a couple whose love transcends time. The movie also stars Russell Crowe, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint, and a cameo by Will Smith as.gasp.Lucifer! This is from writer-director Akiva Goldsman based on the 1983 book by Mark Helprin.
We also have .Endless Love,. the remake of the ultra-schmaltzy 1981 original of the same name starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt from director Franco Zeffirelli. The 2014 remake is pretty much the same Romeo and Juliet rehash but this one stars Alex Pettyfer (.Magic Mike.) and Gabrielle Wilde (.The Three Musketeers.) with Shana Feste at the helm.

Usually, one can clump bad films into two categories. The first are those with stories and characters so dull and lifeless that audience interest wanes instantly. The second are incomprehensibly silly tales that can only work if one embraces their kitschy or campy qualities. Winter’s Tale, the howlingly silly and perplexing debut feature of Oscar-winning scribe Akiva Goldsman, holds the rare distinction of being a third kind of awful. It blends these two aforementioned tomes of terrible cinema together into something almost unwatchable.
Winter’s Tale is adapted from Mark Helprin’s literary fantasy, which runs close to 700 pages and was a massive hit in the mid-1980s. Years ago, Martin Scorsese was going to direct a version of Helprin’s novel but even he found it unreleasable. Years ago, Martin Scorsese was going to direct a version of Helprin’s novel but even he found it unreleasable. Clearly, this project needed a director who could capture Helprin’s magical realism in an enchanting way. Instead, it comes from...

Welcome to Issue 26 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’
Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies.
This week: 2013 was a big year for both superhero and blockbuster filmmaking. A few things might have changed the landscape forever. These are those things.
I’m making a Marvel sandwich. Or I’m starting and concluding this list with non-Marvel, non-superhero movie developments. These are more in the blockbuster sphere, but will undoubtedly change the way superhero movies are made and green-lit based on the current monetary status quo of making huge, multi-million dollar blockbusters.
It seems like after Avatar, the market that matters is an international market. Back when I was a little sprout, knee high to a Paul Giamatti Rhino, people would make whispers about Will Smith and Tom Cruise movies, claiming they’d pick up parts because they were stars accepted around the world.

It's been over a year since Drake and Chris Brown had their New York City nightclub brawl, and the two musicians still haven't let that bad blood go. As recently as two months ago Drake was trash talking Brown, and Brown hasn't been an angel in the situation either. But now Drake has come forward to say he'd like to move away from his conflict with Rihanna's former beau.
"I don't want my name to be synonymous with that guy's name. I really don't," Drake tells GQ. "I wish we could sit down, just like you and me are right now, and talk it out man-to-man. But that's not going to happen. I'm not confrontational, but if someone challenges, I'm not going to back down."
He continues, "It's embarrassing, the amount of media coverage. Two rappers fighting over the woman. He's not even a rapper, but still, it's the last...

Confession: I was one of those people who didn’t know who Kevin Hart was prior to this weekend. But I had tentatively high hopes on learning that he was a comedian. He’s experienced performing before a live audience and comedians have had pretty decent track records hosting the show in the past… What could go wrong? But, as Hart admitted in his opening monologue, there was a reason he was turned down from Saturday Night Live years ago. From the moment Hart overran his monologue, the entire show felt rushed, fizzling out to an unsatisfying conclusion.

It been a long time coming, but technology has finally caught up to the point where movies based on space warfare can happen. The morally shadowy world of “Ender’s Game” is finally coming to the big screen and as such the most fervent of fans get a special teaser of what will come.

The book is a futuristic war-tale where Earth is in constant threat of an alien menace called the Formics. These creatures are insect-like in appearance and have a hive mentality. *Note Updates in next blog: Sundance By Numbers Update
Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.
Bravo Sundance! On all fronts it is carrying through its original purpose and vision.
Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the original visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

The Sundance Film Festival has released their movie premiere line-up for 2013, and there's a lot of films on the list that I'm really interested in seeing. A few of the most notable movies include Before Midnight, jOBS, and Chan wook-Park's Stoker, which is the movie I'm most excited about seeing at the festival.
I'm excited about this year's festival, it looks like we're going to have a ton of movies to see, so we'll be extremely busy. I hope to hell I can find the time to see all the movies I want to see while I'm there. It's always a challenge, but it's a challenge I love to face.
Look over the movie premiere line-up below and let us know if there are any films you're looking forward to seeing!

With the exception of a pair of Fox Searchlight titles (The East and Stoker), Warner Bros.’ Before Midnight and 6 hour mini-series from Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Premieres program is chock-full of acquisition friendly titles. Fourteen in all, the selection includes several returning filmmakers in Drake Doremus, David Gordon Green, Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman and Michael Winterbottom and Joseph Gordon-Levitt — all filmmakers that I accurately predicted would return with product and when we find cast names/star wattage we usually find quality – not surprisingly, four Blacklist listed projects The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (’07), A.C.O.D. (’08), Stoker (’10), The Way, Way Back (’10) (joining the previously announced Toy’s House and Spectacular Now) are among the announcements. And final note: the chances of bumping into either actors Dermont Mulroney or James Franco at a Park City party have now increased: Franco who brings his experimental directed film Interior. Leather Bar....

Sundance Film Festival 2013 is becoming more and more promising seemingly with each passing day.
Last week, we heard the brilliant first line-up, which included the likes of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Kill Your Darlings, The Spectacular Now, Touchy Feely, and Crystal Fairy.
Then came the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier line-ups, which included Sightseers’ Us premiere, S-vhs, and We Are What We Are.
And tonight the festival has announced its line-ups in the Premieres and Documentary Premieres category, and they are somewhat amazing.
Topping the list is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature directorial debut, Don Jon’s Addiction, which is all but guaranteed to be one of the best films of next year.
Also heading to Utah will be Zal Batmanglij’s The East, starring Ellen Page, Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård, and Toby Kebbell, seeing the director re-team with Marling once more following the success of Sound of My Voice.

American actor best known for his film role as the gentle giant in The Green Mile
Every character actor who has ever been typecast dreams of a role that will transcend the cliches of his image. For Michael Clarke Duncan, who has died aged 54 of complications from a heart attack suffered in July, that breakout role also drew on the hidden truth of his own personality, and the results were spectacular.
Duncan was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor in The Green Mile (1999), the film of the Stephen King story in which he plays John Coffey, a gentle giant with extraordinary powers, on death row for raping and killing two young girls. The new Total Recall remake is about to become the prosecution's number one piece of evidence in the criticism that Hollywood is out of original ideas.
Thanks to countless remakes, reboots and re-imaginings, one of the biggest criticisms Hollywood gets right now is that it is out of original ideas. And the new Total Recall remake is about to become the prosecution's number one piece of evidence.
I was dubious about Colin Farrell getting his ass to Mars (in theory) since day one, but opened myself up to the possibility that treading new ground could prove fertile to the screenwriter's imagination. Oh how wrong I was.
Not only does Recall reboot suffer from one of the laziest scripts to make it past the greenlight point, but it has warped Melina (a ferocious female in the original) into a pathetic two-dimensional dud who serves no real purpose in the film aside from giving Colin Farrell's character someone...

This article by Nate von Zumwalt, Editorial Coordinator for Sundance was posted on Sundance's website on June 22, 2012.
I am glad to repost it here because it shows the dynamic integrity continues chez Sundance. Here it is with thanks to Nate.
Take one cursory glance at the annals of the Sundance Film Festival and you’ll notice a persistent and invariable trend: first-time directors. The theme is as astounding as it is inspiring. In 2012 alone, 44 of the 112 feature-film selections were crafted by first-time directors, and a handful of others had made their debuts at Sundance in years past. It would all make for quite the family tree, branching and bifurcating into one massive connection of artists with a similar root. But in lieu of that tedious task, we still like to keep an eye on those filmmakers who have shared their genius with Sundance over the years. In light of yesterday’s thrilling news that Rodriguez—the enigmatic Mexican American musician and the subject of the Sff ’12 opening night doc Searching for Sugarman—is set to play The Late Show with David Letterman in August, we’ve decided to check in on some of the more notable Sundance alumni involving themselves in some of the more notable projects of late.
Sean Durkin
Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
Director Sean Durkin grabbed the Directing Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival for his chilling cult thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene, which went on to an accolade-filled year. Durkin further validates his penchant for disturbing subject matter with the recent news that he’s slotted to direct a 10-episode television adaptation of The Exorcist. Click here to read more.
Debra Granik
Winter’s Bone (2010); Down to the Bone (2004)
Two-time Sundancer Debra Granik is back on the grind with a slew of projects in motion—you know her for her 2010 Oscar-nominated drama Winter’s Bone and her 2004 Sundance selection Down to the Bone. Currently Granik is dabbling in a bit of everything, from an HBO family drama, to a war doc, and an adaptation of Russell Bank’s novel Rule of the Bone.Seriously, Debra? The ‘bone’ trend is getting a little weird.
Click here for more on Granik’s busy schedule.
Josh Radnor
happythankyoumoreplease (2010), Liberal Arts (2012)
Josh Radnor—or according to Gawker, the “Guy From How I Met Your Mother”—happens to be doing more than just playing Ted Mosby on the popular sitcom. Since winning the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for happythankyoumoreplease, Radnor directed the Sff ’12 Official Selection Liberal Arts, and most recently penned the book One Blissful Thing, recounting his transcendent experience ingesting a hallucinogenic plant in the Amazon—perhaps this explains the enduring case of bed head?
Check out a fun interview by Moviefone earlier this year.
Lee Daniels
Precious (2009)
Lee Daniels is the man behind the Oscar-winning drama Precious, a searing portrait of a relentlessly abusive family that virtually swept the Sundance Film Festival Award Ceremony in 2009. His latest film, Paperboy, opened at Cannes last month and was acquired by Millenium Entertainment and is set for an Oct. 5 release. A GQ interview with Daniels about the film’s mixed reception along with some hilarious anecdotes can be found here.
Zal Batmanglij
Sound of My Voice (2012)
Zal Batmanglij kick-started his career with the eerie cult drama Sound of My Voice, which was released by Fox Searchlight this past spring. His next film, The East, also stars his Georgetown University pal Brit Marling, in addition to Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page, Julia Ormond, and Patricia Clarkson. Catch up with Zal in Indiewire’s recent sit-down. Clickhere.
Drake Doremus
Like Crazy (2011)
Drake Doremus’ follow-up to the Grand Jury Prize-winning Like Crazy is in the works, and he’s yet again enlisted the talents of the alluring Felicity Jones, along with Guy Pearce, and Amy Ryan. Following his dry-witted debut feature, Douchebag, Doremus shifted moods with the beautifully heart-wrenching Like Crazy. He appears to be jumping genres once again with his current project, which has been dubbed a ‘romantic thriller.’
There’s more from Indiewire here.
Robert Rodriguez
El Mariachi (1993)
It’ll be a cold day in hell before Charlie Sheen finds his way into the Sundance news section. Well, it seems that day has come with the casting announcement for Robert Rodriguez’s sequel to Machete. Rodriguez and Sheen both confirmed via tweets that the wayward actor would play the President of the United States in Machete Kills, complementing other additions including Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, and Mel Gibson. Rodriguez’s Sundance lineage is traced back to his first-ever feature film, El Mariachi, which premiered at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. Read the full story here.

Bigger things are just around the corner for "Like Crazy" star Felicty Jones. With the period-based vibrator comedy "Hysteria" on the way to theaters, and her untitled movie with Drake Doremus sure to arrive at the festival circuit later this year, her star is only going to continue to rise. And later on in 2012, she'll team up with Ralph Fiennes for "The Invisible Woman." But coming first is another festival apperance by the actress, this time at Tribeca with her latest effort, "Cheerful Weather For A Wedding."

With Universal’s Battleship out Aprill 11th in cinemas nationwide, we sat down with the film’s director, Peter Berg, to discuss naval operations, the USS Missouri and 3D.
Watching the movie, it reminded me of Transformers, Alien and Robocop, are you a big fan of these sci-fi movies, and did you talk to Michael Bay?
I haven’t done a lot of science fiction, I’m a big fan of the navy and I wanted to do a navy film. I wanted to do a big movie, I wanted to do a film that had a big global reach. I didn’t want to make a film that felt really violent and brutal, so the idea of humans fighting humans felt too violent, and I had seen this Stephen Hawking documentary about Goldilocks planets and us reaching out and sending signals, and how Stephen Hawking thought this was a horrible idea,...

Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the upper class, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, the vampire romance "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.
But all things come to an end, and while "The Hunger Games" is only just hitting theaters, sequel "Catching Fire" is already set for release in November 2013, with final "Mockingjay" presumably following another eighteen months or so after that. And when you figure in that "Harry Potter...

Could an adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 survive a trip to Hollywood? Ryan looks at the best and worst case scenarios…
Nineteen Eighty-Four (or 1984, as we’ll refer to it here for search-based reasons). What more can we say about one of the most influential and widely read sci-fi novels yet written? A common set text in English lessons, and full of ideas and terms that have since seeped into our everyday language, it’s easy to forget just how brutal and urgent George Orwell’s novel is.
Already adapted several times since its publication 63 years ago, 1984, we learned last week, is going to Hollywood. Two production companies (Lbi Entertainment and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment) are teaming up to bring a new version of Orwell’s dystopia to the big screen. A screenwriter is still being sought – and there’s no word yet as to who will direct it...

The Descendants (15)
(Alexander Payne, 2011, Us) George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause, Robert Forster. 115 mins
A sideways move from Sideways takes Payne on another tour of masculine crises, though this has mellowed and matured for longer. Family issues jolt Clooney out of his Hawaiian comfort zone. His wife's sudden coma puts him in charge of their two daughters, and brings their marriage into perspective, while his control of the ancestral estate adds to the burden. It's a well-rooted drama of great performances and big themes (and probably big awards).
Like Crazy (12A)
(Drake Doremus, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence. 90 mins
Young love sees no colour, but it must abide by visa regulations in this cross-Atlantic romantic saga, which tests a couple's endurance in an offbeat, indie style.
The Grey (15)
(Joe Carnahan, 2012, Us) Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo. 117 mins
Liam Neeson v wolves – seems like a good match.

MTV is full of fun today, and while you may think that has something to do with the clip of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt.1 that is being revealed tonight, it actually has a lot more to do with the info that Awkward. is coming to DVD on November 14th.
That show blew me away from the first episode, and even though there were a few rough patches throughout the season, it's still a winner.
First, I've got some video clips, but be sure to check below for all the info on the DVD release.
Mac Miller stopped by for a "First Date" with MTV News' Rya Backer. Rya took the self-described "half-Jewish" rapper to NYC' Katz' Delicatessen. There, they enjoyed some pastrami on rye, talked Jewish rap history and Mac's 5 year plan: to win a Heisman, a Nobel Peace Prize and a Kids Choice Award.

Two gala films made their bow yesterday night at the BFI London Film Festival, Like Crazy and 50/50. They had a few things in common: both saw relationships going less-than-smoothly; both are a bit unexpected and cooler than you'd think, and both star some of the cooler young actors around.
First up, writer/director Drake Doremus and star Felicity Jones were in town for Like Crazy, which sees Jones as a young English student who falls for an American (Anton Yelchin) but sees the romance run into problems when she's ejected from the country for outstaying her visa. There's able support from the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, the Twilight Saga's Charlie Bewley and Alex Kingston as well - not bad going for such a disgustingly young director (he's only 28).
Then there was 50/50, the "cancer comedy" wherein Joseph Gordon-Levitt is taken ill and has to adjust his life accordingly - a process...

We have six months to go and a lot of movies left to watch, and as was evidenced by the six films I included in my "Top Ten of the Year Contenders" on yesterday's The Best and Worst Movies of 2011... So Far post, there haven't been a ton of excellent films in theaters just yet. Three of those six films I saw at the Cannes Film Festival and only one of them has hit theaters so far (Midnight in Paris). This means we have to wash away the taste of the last six months. Sure, there were some good films and films we will all likely revisit over the years, but I think we can all generally agree 2011 hasn't exactly been a stellar year for movies.
So what's coming up? Well, I was able to compile a list of the top 21 (plus three) films I'm personally looking forward to seeing.

Drake Doremus's romance is grand jury favourite at Sundance film festival while Paddy Considine's Tyrannosaur takes home three major awards
British actor Felicity Jones won the special jury prize: dramatic at the Sundance film festival at the weekend for her role in romance Like Crazy, which also won the grand jury prize for best film.
Drake Doremus's film, whose dialogue was largely improvised, tracks the long-distance relationship between a British woman (Jones) and an American man (Anton Yelchin). The movie also features Jennifer Lawrence, whose film Winter's Bone won last year's grand jury prize and has been nominated for four Oscars.
Two world cinema special jury prizes: dramatic for breakout performances were presented to Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan for their roles in Tyrannosaur, Paddy Considine's feature-length directorial debut about a troubled man who finds a chance of redemption in the form of a Christian charity shop worker.
