Pretty weird...and innovative!
planktonrules11 October 2011
Irving Kaufman sings in an insanely fast manner as Lew White plays the organ. I say insanely fast because it really put me on edge as I listened--especially in the opening.

The film consists of this singing as various newsreel-like images pass before the screen. Some of the camera-work and framing techniques are pretty innovative--as are the credits of the presidents as they shoot towards the viewer. I can really respect these innovations--even if the film itself is pretty dreadful and hard to watch by today's standards! The DVD from the set from American Film Archives describes it all as kitschy--I just think it was dated and dull.

By the way, get a load of the incredibly offensive images of black people in the cartoon segment before the baby parade--uggh!

Parades On Parade

Irving Kaufman plays the pipe organ, Lew White sings in three songs with "Parade" in their titles.

Sing-alongs had been a regular feature of movie shows back in the days when the movies were just part of a variety show; some one would come on stage, sing a song, and offer to sell the audience the sheet music. Often the words were projected on a screen, first form a magic lantern, then later from a motion picture projector.

Lew White does the vocals with an overwrought quality, something like Ted Lewis. The songs are "I Love A Parade", "The Baby Parade", and "Presidents on Parade." Think that Calvin Coolidge was not the subject of a song? Think again.
