- Knowing that a cyborg has been sent from the future to kill Martin Bedell, John and Kyle go undercover at a military academy to protect him. Kyle remembers his former life as a member of the underground and in particular, Bedell's very important contribution to the fight against Skynet. Meanwhile, knowing that two other Sarah Connors were killed in the Terminators search for her, she rescues a young boy also named Martin Bedell, to keep him safe. In doing so, she also learns a little bit about herself.—garykmcd
- Our episode begins with a man grilling in his backyard. He turns around with a plate of meat and finds himself staring straight into the chest of a Triple-8. "Martin Bedell?" the terminator asks.
We're next at the Connor's pad, where John is reading about the man's death. Derek tells John that Martin Bedell is the name of a man who eventually helps John form the resistance. This recently deceased Martin Bedell is not the same man, so the terminators must simply be killing everybody with the same name.
After a bit of research, they find out that John's Martin Bedell (from now on referred to here as Bedell) is in military school, a piece of info the terminator proably doesn't have. John and Derek go to the school while Sarah says she will proceed to the residence of L.A.'s last Martin Bedell to try and slow up the terminator.
As Derek and John drive to the school, Derek tells him they cannot simply grab Bedell and hide him, since taking him off his life's course would remove his eventual usefulness to John.
Weaver meets with Ellison, asking him to look into the nuclear plant Cameron helped save a few episodes earlier. As Derek and John arrive at the military school, Derek flashes forward to fighting the machines with Bedell. In this instance Bedell decides to go after a convoy of prisoners over the protestations of Derek.
Derek meets with an official of the school and gets John a three-week trial period as a plebe and agrees to fill-in as a temporary instructor.
We cut to a kid playing online video games at home when the door bell. He looks through the peep and sees the same cyborg from earlier. "Martin Bedell?" comes the terminators question, and as the kid answers "yes" Sarah appears out of nowhere to pull him away from the door just as the cyborg fires a half dozen rounds though the frame. With the help of Cameron, Sarah whisks the city's final Martin Bedell (Little Marty, in this synopsis) to safety.
Ellison goes to the plant and finds out the official findings don't gel with the evidence at the scene. The official he meets with says he is sending a report to the NRC which should draw more attention to the plant and prevent it from re-opening.
While Derek investigates the perimeter of the camp, John has his first encounter with Bedell, who "loves to run." The pair goes for a jog in the forest and runs into Derek who has found the area is in the La Brea pits, and that tar is seeping through ground in several locations.
Sarah, Cameron and Little Marty are bunkered in at the house, and Sarah tells Cameron that keeping Little Marty safe has become their mission. Derek speaks with some of the plebes, telling one over-eager cadet named (and I wish I was kidding) Pyle a sobering story of how brutal war can be. This leads to another flash-forward, as Bedel continues to spear-head this rescue mission.
In the present John and Bedell have a heart-to-heart at lunch, with Bedell confiding in John that he has met a girl, another runner, and plans to leave academy and follow her to college. John tells Derek this bit of info, and Derek tells him that they have to help Bedell make the "right" choice.
Cameron allows Little Marty to watch a news report, and he sees his parents promising they will get their son back. This bothers Little Marty, who begins to obsess over a book report he needs to do for school. He ends up picking Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Sarah sends Cameron off to protect Little Marty's parent.
Ellison pops into a bar near the plant, finding out Sarah was there the night before the incident. Derek begins planning tactics the terminator's eventual arrival, telling John a touching story about his father. Ellison reports back to Weaver that the plant incident was the result of two machines fighting and that the plant manager's report will be problematic. The next scene is Weaver posing as an attractive woman, seducing the plant manager and then killing him outside the same bar.
Cameron tells Sarah that the Triple-8 will likely switch from Little Marty to Bedell and heads off to Bedell's home to wait. Sarah calls Derek and tells him the Triple-8 is now on its way to the academy. Sarah and Little Marty start bonding as she helps him with his book report.
Derek alters a training exercise, telling the cadets their new mission is to help signal the arrival of the cyborg, or a "man with a gun." Derek will lead the terminator past a certain point, at which time John and Bedell are to set off claymore mines. There is another flash-forward to Derek and Bedell trying to find a way to bring down a SkyNet tank that is bearing down on them.
Sarah and Little Marty start reading the Wizard of Oz as the battle begins to unfold. Derek shoots the terminator in the head and takes off running. John and Bedell set off the claymores, but the terminator is able to pop-up and focus in on Bedell. With Bedell looking cornered, John distracts the terminator by shouting out his real name (he had been using an alias to that point). Derek is able to pump a few more giant bullets into the machine, dropping it into one of the pits where they are able to destroy it as Bedell looks on. We see Cameron in the woods nearby as Derek and John depart.
Sarah puts Little Marty on a bus, and the kid tells her she's not very good at being a mother. As John and Derek pack up, Bedell clearly has been impacted by what he now knows will happen in the future. We flash forward one more time to Derek and Bedell. Derek wants to carry an explosive out to destroy the tank and save his brother, but Bedell tells him he isn't fast enough.
Back in the car Derek tells John that Forest Gump, er, Bedell ran "so fast" that day, and was able to destroy the tank before it got to Kyle's position and led to the rescue 40 prisoners. One of those prisoners was (can you guess?) none other than John Conner. Bedell was a great runner, Derek tells a weepy John, but no one could outrun a blast like that. He died for you, Derek says. We all die for you.
