Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, a single celled parasite. Infection is mainly caused by eating under-cooked food and exposure to infected cat feces. In most healthy adults toxoplasmosis is asymptomatic, in some cases people with healthy immune systems can get mild flu-like symptoms (swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fever, muscle aches and fatigue) during the first few weeks following infection. Serious toxoplasmosis symptoms usually only appear in people with compromised immune systems, such as AIDS patients, chemotherapy patients and patients who have recently had an organ transplant. Symptoms of serious toxoplasmosis are: headache, confusion, poor coordination, seizures, lung problems that may resemble tuberculosis or Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (a common infection that occurs in people with AIDS), or blurred vision caused by severe inflammation of the retina (ocular toxoplasmosis).
