GAMEBOYS - NOT JUST ANOTHER BL STORY
robinmagno20 July 2020
"Gameboys" is of course the little Philippine-made Boys Love (BL) series by The IdeaFirst Company that is now taking the BL-world, social media, and the filmmaking industry by storm.

I must admit that many of my insights in this blog entry come from this report: GMA7 News Online's "How online BL series 'Gameboys' injects Pinoy flavor, resourceful flair in the genre" published July 3, 2020.

It must also be noted that amongst the many reports/articles (Ricky Calderon/The Manila Bulletin, Rank magazine, PsychoMilk, etc.) that I have read, this, so far, contains the most expansive details about the series, especially about the shooting/filmmaking process, although I must give a shout-out to Ricky F. Lo of The Philippine Star's FanFare fame for being the first of the major columnists to give "Gameboys" the light of day, so to speak.

Apart from the vivid descriptions of the "new" shooting/filmmaking process that the production team was forced to deploy (or workaround with), due to the limitations and contingencies engendered by the quarantined situations, which in turn were brought about by concerns against the spread of the covid-19 virus, what I found remarkable in the reportage is the purpose of the series.

PERCY M. INTALAN, president of The IdeaFirst Company and executive producer of "Gameboys" reportedly asked, perhaps rhetorically: We thought, why don't we try telling a story in this current situation?

While making a love story against the backdrop of the quarantined situations may seem like a "duh" moment or a "given" that is as tired as a cliche, it is actually a stroke of genius, especially if the euphemistically called "lockdowns" are but one of the many innovative elements (the least of which being, the creative use of ubiquitous communications technology and gadgets as a focal narrative point and as a device or mechanism to naturally move the storytelling forward) in the narrative that has become relatable precisely due to its contemporariness (referred to as a "present-day setting" in the GMA7 Online News report) where everyone is going through not just the same difficulties and deprivations but also the similar ways of coping and resourcefulness.

The report goes on to say that "at its very core, "Gameboys" tells the story of two boys in love during the quarantine. The distance between the would-be lovers and the online tools they use to communicate are important characters in the show, too. More importantly, it tells a story of how love and relationships have changed - and, perhaps, made more challenging - because of the pandemic. It tells a very specific story about where we are as people navigating love, desire, and relationship with COVID-19 very much in the air."

"The reason why kinikilig yung mga tao now is ramdam nila, e. Ramdam nila yung pagkakahiwalay nung dalawa. Ramdam mo yung isolation. Ramdam nila yung longing na magkita pero hindi pwede," Intalan said.

"Smart and engaging," sabi nga sa report.

Indeed, the people behind the production's take on where they wanted to bring the narrative is noteworthy and at least for me, and imho, very admirable.

"For me, BL is kind of almost a fantasy and it's a world where social norms are not even a concern. Nobody has to justify why they like people of the same sex. They just do. That's how the world should be. But at the same time, napansin namin na masyadong magaan yung treatment ng BL, na hindi naman nage-exist yung societal concerns," Intalan said.

The report adds: They also wanted to feature more than just "fantasy," to make "Gameboys" more palatable to the Filipino audience. For instance, family is an important factor both in the lives of Filipinos and in Pinoy fictionalized media. "In the Philippines, it's important that we still address that in a BL way," Intalan said. Hence, the introduction of some "Filipino" elements in the show. For instance: Cai's father in the show has COVID-19 so familial concerns can be featured in "Gameboys"; De Santos' Gavreel telling Canlas' Cai he's willing to show a bit more skin for him "with his consent," adding a "woke" aspect to a genre that is occasionally problematic with its depiction of sexuality; So's Pearl casually admitting that she likes Alden Richards, but is also interested in Catriona Gray, making her possible bisexuality a normal character element, not a novelty.

"We're not interested in doing something if we cannot espouse a few messages in it. Yun yung gusto namin maging brand ng BL namin, na it's woke. It's still BL but it's a woke kind of BL. Importante yun, e," Intalan said.

Somewhere in the report, Intalan says: More importantly, it tells a story of how love and relationships have changed - and, perhaps, made more challenging - because of the pandemic.

What Intalan did not say: "Gameboys" tells the behind-the-scenes story of how shooting/filmmaking "has changed - and, perhaps, made more challenging - because of the pandemic."

Sa intents pa lang, panalo na talaga ang "Gameboys". E hindi, the team also inadvertently re-defined shooting/filmmaking, thus making them reluctant pioneers and trailblazers in the industry.

Bravo!

THE BEST PHILIPPINE MADE BL SERIES, SO FAR
robinmagno20 July 2020
I have written about this earlier: while the Boys Love (BL) genre may have already become mainstream in Thailand, its popularity in international/Asian markets such as in the Philippines (and for that matter, South Korea, Taiwan and China) may still be considered as nascent.

It's certainly up for debate but in the Philippines, the unfortunate quarantine situations appeared to have worked in favor of arresting the attention of socmed-savvy netizens of the country. The chatter on socmed should bear this out, particularly on "2gether: The Series" - a 2020 Thai BL series about two college-aged boys who began a fake relationship that soon became real.

Soon as well, Twitter was awash with clips and commentaries on other BL series that have become popular in Thailand and elsewhere but in the Philippines, that is, until recently: "SOTUS: The Series" (2016), "Together With Me" (2017), and "TharnType: The Series" (2019).

I, myself, have been able to recently binge-watch and expand my viewing options, to include "Addicted Heroin" from China and "Where Your Eyes Linger" from South Korea. There are other titles I checked but if nothing catches my fancy early on, such as the story/dialog (even if subtitled) or the actors, I discontinue to watch post-haste.

I have no authority to be saying this but probably due to the popularity of BLs lately, home-grown BLs also started being announced to either be in development, or being shown soon.

In fact, "Gameboys" #GAMEBOYStheSeries, "Sakristan", "Hello Stranger" and "Truly Very Yous" are available now (as per Facebook account "Boys Love Drama").

Esteemed BL-centric site, "PyschoMilk" #psychomilk considers the release of "Gameboys" a welcome surprise. It writes: "Across PyschoMilk's social media platforms, we are always putting out feelers and teasers about purely BL series that are soon to come from Filipino filmmakers. Never did we realize that we would be blindsided and surprised that it will be much sooner than we thought." A welcome blindside and pleasant surprise indeed.

At the same time, I am in anticipation over the release of "Oh, Mando" and mildly expectant over "My Day: The Series" even as "PyschoMilk" mentions in one of its features that these other titles - "My Extraordinary", "Where We Were", "Sa Pagitan ng Kumusta at Paalam" and "The Boy Foretold By The Stars" are also forthcoming.

Let us also not forget that popular spoken word artist Juan Miguel Severo has penned "Gaya Sa Pelikula" and awaiting production by Globe Studios, even as the script is now available on Wattpad.

As per Facebook account "Boys Love Drama", there will be "11 BL series from the Philippines ongoing or slated to be shown this year (2020)."

To be sure, there had been filmed gay-themed productions in the past 5 or so years but nothing compares to "Gameboys" as a true (as against what "PyschoMilk" refers to as quasi) BL series. "PsychoMilk" describes TEAM Mag's "Hanging Out" in 2016, as pseudo-BL. "PscyhoMilk" continues: It appears that "Gameboys" is not just a token representation of the LGBTQ+ community, but a genre series that entices squeals from the fangirls, a skipped heartbeat from a gay man as he is reminded of what his youth could have been if society had been more welcoming in years past....

Truth be told, this year, and despite the quarantine situations, there appears to be a veritable prolific harvest of BLs in a relatively short amount of time - it is cause for celebrations!

Best pandemic / BL series
nielssloos-1718614 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After watching "Kalel, 15" and being impressed by the talent that is Elijah Canlas, I could not have been happier to see that he played a gay character in this series. The story is simple; two young boys meet each other online in the middle of the pandemic and fall in love. However, it is fair to say that there is so much else going on in this series

Both main characters are played well, but where Gavreel falls a bit flat (he does not have that much challenges to overcome), Cairo is portrayed perfectly and got me very emotional at some points.

There are many US shows that are using the COVID situation in a terrible and unrealistic way, therefore It was a delight to see how this show managed to come up with some original ideas and focusing more on the effect the pandemic has on a person

The episodes are short, funny, heartwarming and emotional at the same time and the ending is really satisfying. I can't wait to see the movie, Highly recommend this show.

Best BL series ever!
nielsnable13 September 2020
I simply don't have words to describe how amazing this series is. As a member of the LGBTQ community, I feel deeply honored that this show pushed boundaries to tell our story as a marginalized sector. It's not your typical BL series. "Gameboys" tackled important social issues such as coming out of the closet and the importance of communication in youth development. The main actors are seriously some of the best in the industry. Despite being non-LGBT, Kokoy de Santos and Elijah Canlas portrayed their LGBT characters convincingly. Their emotional scenes are some of the best I've seen in any movie or TV show. Excellent actors.

Just watch "Gameboys." It's only 13 episodes. Really worth your time.

GOD-TIER BOYS LOVE SERIES!!
zoneisrestricted21 July 2020
This Filipino BL Series really paved the way and raise the stabdards for future BL series that I'll be watching.

The episodes are just too cute and it's nearly impossible for anyone not yo get hooked with Gav's (Kokoy de Santos) charm and at thr same time, recognize the acting prowess of the award winning actor Elijah Canlas (playing the role of Cairo) in this series.

Most of the episodes were really kilig or cheesy episodes. But this BL has also successfully tackle relevant social issues like mental health, coming out issues, importance of validation of feelings and social connection to maintain your sanity during lockdown. This is more than just BL. This is a powerful story that can help anyone who is struggling with identity or grief.

I also need to recognize the brilliant minds behind this seriesm the scriptwriter, the director, everyone on and behind the camera. This series would not be perfect if they weren't there.

GUYS!!! YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS. I SWEAR!!!

Great way to start BL series here in the Philippines
ashdv-9581328 June 2020
The series itself is too good! It was brilliantly conceptualized. The cast is great. They compliment each other in the very best way. And the fact that they are not in a usual "set" is already amazing. A series that plays with your emotions. Aseries that makes you crave for more. I've never thought that they could create such an amazing series. Also, 'twas overwhelming that the international community welcomed this wholeheartedly. A must-watch. Congratulations to the whole team!

This is that one "BAD REVIEW" that you are looking for.
Asher9928 June 2020
Did I get your attention?

Honestly, the only bad thing about this series is that it's going to end soon (sad) but... (if you are curious go head over to the official accounts of the ideafirst company and find out for yourself)

The best way to describe this series is that it's RIGHT IN YOUR FACE FANTASTIC PERIOD!

Found this series by chance and luck, considering that at that time, it was about to premiere and I must say it's one of those moments of finding something great that you just want everyone to know about.

This series is a take on the BL genre which includes the not so usual - usual tropes - that you see on a BL but is given a new depth of feeling for the audience to consume. I must say, the Filipino way of courting as portrayed in this series is to some degree - pretty accurate and is given justice by the two main lead Elijah Canlas as Cairo and Kokoy de Santos as Gavreel.

Another commendable aspect of the series is the way it is relatable to the present time, literally the first thing that popped into my mind is how timely and relevant this series is. The whole feel of the series revolves around the "new normal", utilizing video calls as the primary form of communication, you would expect the lack of feelings or chemistry between the characters but in my defense it's this very exact drawback of shooting through video calls that makes their emotions shine more, the feelings portrayed by the characters are very well received through the other end of the viewer's screen. Sitting through every episode will literally make you feel that you are there and that you are not watching it as an audience but rather as another person that is part of the conversation. To put it simply, it's right in your face when it hits.

The series is well received internationally, a major factor I believe, of why the series has reached international audiences is the fact that it is a breath of fresh air and also the underlying fact that the huge following that it created has spread the news like wildfire. In a way, it is peculiar to international audiences but very familiar to Filipino ones, needless to say it does make you feel all the right stuff at all the right moment. So if you are a person that loves to watch reaction videos just to make sense of your own feelings, then GAMEBOYS should definitely be on your watch list since it does not have a shortage of reaction videos that you will surely be able to relate to.

With a promising end to Episode 1, the series is gaining more momentum with each succeeding episode and without a doubt it won't be stopping any time soon. With the series being based upon an original script and not an already existing novel, each episode will definitely leave you breathless and will consume every ounce of your imagination just thinking of what the possible outcomes are but as they say within the GAMEBOYS community, leave it to sir Ash to surprise you.

This I can guarantee you, the series is not a stranger to a great script nor is it lacking of well-written character arcs, you'll definitely fall in love with baby Cai Lazaro, the ever so forward yet dashing Gavreel Alarcon, the unbothered queen Pearl Gatdula and probably the devilish TERRENCE Carreon? (we'll see TERRENCE... we'll see).

One thing is for certain, you're missing out on a great journey if you haven't started watching yet. I personally like this series and is easily one of my favorite up to date. If you consider the fair share of BL's I've watched so far then I can proudly say that what I have stated so far is nothing short of a FACT.

This review might come out too strong or biased but wait till you see yourself finish watching the episodes and afterwards heading here to write your own review. So, let me welcome you now in hopes that whoever is reading this is going to be a part of the THIRDWHEELS family.

I have been a Bl fan for 13 years now, its not even called BL back then. I have seen tons and tons of Bl series but by far THIS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST! The show is told in a way that is very unique. So much conceptualization has been done here and you can relate to every single character. The cliche BL scenes won't be seen here. There is no dead air, the story doesn't drag and the actors are phenomenal!

If you are still not sure, at least just try watching the first episode. It's literally 10 minutes long and I am sure you won't stop there. That's the thing with this show you always want more and more with every single episode.

and did I say THE ACTORS ARE AMAZING? I didn't? I'll say it again. THEY ARE AMAZING!!!

This show is like a cotton candy with a crusty sugar coating filled with a sugar ball. That's basically it, lots of sugar but little flavor It's basically about falling in love at first sight and being crazily romantic ever since.

BL Series beyond comparison!
lsmoquite28 June 2020
After watching the Love of Siam in 2007, I got hook to stories and story telling that is not common in a movie or series. That is why, I am on to indie films and underrated movies in the big screen so to speak. These movies opened my mind and heart about emotional turmoils, political and social issues in the country and of the world in general. Furthermore, it also gives me the true meaning of love which indeed grows and finds its way to a person whom it truly belongs regardless of age, color and gender. GameBoys, on this matter, has delivered the elements that I am looking for; given that majority of Filipinos are conservative and not so open with the idea of "Boys Love" or long time ago, was called "Bromance". The actors are very witty, fun-loving and have the vibe that are relatable to both young and old viewers. Elijah Canlas (Cairo) and Kokoy De Santos (Gavreel) are considered newbies in the movies and films industry in the country yet they have shown finess in their acting and delivered what they are expected to do. At the very young age, they are becoming one of the sought after actors and they are making names in the field. Accompanied by the bubbly and beautiful actress Adriana So (Pearl), the series have given us the complete flavor in a BL series. The producers, directors and the rest of the crew have done well in giving the country's first digital series. What else can say? Well, it is broadcast and shown in youtube by the Ideafirst Company for free. What more can you ask for? All in all... it is a milestone and groundbreaking for Filipinos especially now that it is getting the eyes of international audience.

Not Your Ordinary BL Series
ebsebs-8422128 June 2020
I have never been so hooked into a series, much more to a BL genre. Everything just works perfectly in this series. The platform used is mainly online through social media and messaging apps which is an out of the box concept. The story just flows naturally without the need to impose just to tell. Plot is very relevant to this day where people reach out mostly online. All the actors are superbly delivering the emotions the script requires without overacting/underacting. While series focuses on the two main characters, it tackles several current social significance which make it relevant and relatable to audience not only to LGBT community. Once you start watching, you will be glued to it as every episode endings leave you with a cliffhanger wanting you to see the next episodes.

Garbage and predictable.
drodmons19 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Do you want Filipino TV shows and movies to ascend and be better? Don't settle for this tier.

I don't mean to disrespect anyone who liked or worked on this show... but I really wish Filipino writers and filmmakers work past cliché storylines.

This show was predictable. You can tell who will die, who will fall in love, and who will join and give that overplayed "love triangle problem". C'mon , ANOTHER love triangle plot? ANOTHER Korean aesthetic copy? ANOTHER will they or won't they story. Are they even trying?

On top of that, I dare you to count how many times the word 'baby' was used. As if the writers were trying their best to see if it's possible to make your ears bleed with a single word.

To the actors who did their best as this may be their first project, good job. Keep working.

Dear Filipino entertainers, please do better.

Episode 8: On Home is the Safest Place
abdullahmaute19 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
(The series is full of restorative values, hence in this review I focus on 'Home is the Safest Place' to be who we really are)

Parallelly, one of the reasons why Cai ran away aside from fear of being not accepted by his family was he felt that the home was not safe for him to be who he really was. "Ma, I am sorry, because I am not the son you think I was." Although the core outtake of this is we should never feel sorry for who we really are - that we have to be unapologetically us - there is an unpolished wisdom here.

Family offers the experience of belonging that we needed. We long to belong. And if we think we don't belong to any other classes, then the family will save our dread and anxiety for that. But what happen when we don't feel like we belong to the family - that is we feel that we are not safe at home where our family domiciled? We are forced to fit into the mould of moral normalism. We are forced to wear the armor of masculinity or uniform of femininity. We are compelled to be the good child. Such a case is the endgame of freedom of being who we really are.

This is why the home should be the safest place for the member of the family to be who they really are. We have had enough of wearing mask in corporate world or at university or with the company of our friend. We should unwear all these masks effectively when we say, "I am home."

Redeemingly, the Lazaro family is the perfect illustration of this. Cai didn't feel safe at home to show who he really was and when he was outed - afraid of rejection - he ran away. But his family reassured him that the home was the safest place to be who he really was. "You don't apologize for being who you really are," Cai's mom said. In her serious attempt to console and for Cai to not feel apologetic, she humbly apologized, "I didn't make an effort to gain your trust to make you fell that you could tell anything to me, to us... I didn't make you feel that we are on your side. That you are safe with us." On the part of his brother Lazaro, he had already told Cai that he accepted him in Episode 7, albeit told in the mood of grief and anger. But knowing that his brother would blame himself for the demise of their father - and as an eldest brother - he said, "I am sorry for making you feel that way. It is not your fault." Lastly his father - too knowing that his son was blaming himself - sent a scheduled email that freed Cai from all the guilt that consuming him: "It saddens me every time you texted me at the hospital. I already told you that it's not your fault. Maybe, you really need to hear me forgive you. OK, I forgive you, Cairo. I hope you forgive yourself, too." These lines - banal and modest but they have not been told in our everyday life - coming from the member of Lazaro family encapsulate that home is the safest place to be who we really are.

It's everything other shows couldn't portray in a full 16 episodes.
SapioHedonist119 July 2020
I started watching this series because it looked light and fun. Little did I know I was in for a roller coaster ride of emotions.

Let's talk about the characters first. Gavreel and Cairo.

Gavreel seemed to be a player with smooth pickup lines at first. It's like you couldn't take him seriously with his dimples and cheesy pickup lines. But then as the story progressed, he's proven himself to be almost the perfect representation of what a persistent and a dedicated patient love is.

As much as an extrovert Gavreel acted was the opposite of Cairo. He seemed very hesitant to opening up and closed off with a glimpse of his really beautiful smile here and there when he's playing games. Perhaps, the reason he was more into games during that time was actually to distract himself from the many stuff going on in his life at the moment.

I don't want to put spoilers here so I won't. Just take it from me who've been watching a bunch of BLs all over the world. THIS DRAMA was ten thousand fold better than most. And I won't even include those problematic BLs that only rely on 'good looking actors' to pull off a story line which is beyond believable and borderline criminal.

I believe in character development don't get me wrong. I give a series so many chances of redeeming themselves. However, most fail sadly.

Now going back to Gameboys, the life lessons here are worth showing even to non-BL fans. It's a series on a league of it's own and I can totally say that GAMEBOYS has set the standard so high it's going to be hard for me to find something that would hit me as much as this show did.

Gameboys is such a gem that people should watch. A coming out story, finding acceptance, reality of moving on and finding love and connection to the people around in this time of pandemic.

GREAT CASTING. FLAWLESS AND NATURAL FLOW OF SCRIPT.

Gameboys is not just a BL. It's a story of people all over the world.

WATCH IT NOW. REALLY. Thank me later.
