Cho is cursed!
Tweekums4 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The CBI are called in when high school student Cody Elkins goes missing; his body is soon found along with symbols suggesting some sort of satanic ritual. The boy's family are quick to the point the finger of blame at Tamzin Dove, the local 'witch'; she had apparently cursed Cody for stealing her cat. She doesn't deny being a witch and cursing Cody but states that she had nothing to do with the murder. Cho is distinctly uncomfortable around her; especially after she demonstrates her skills by casting a spell on him. Inevitably other suspects soon emerge; it turns out that Cody had a bit of a temper and had recently fought with his school football coach, hospitalised a friend and had previously hospitalised his own brother twice giving plenty of people with a motive to kill him.

This was a rather fun episode; there were plenty of suspects with a similar number of motives. The suggestion that somebody involved in 'black magic' is a killer might not be new but it was done in an entertaining way; I particularly liked how Cho was 'cursed' and his subsequent paranoia; Tim Kang does a fine job in the role playing him straight which just makes him funnier. As expected Simon Baker produces most of the episode's laughs as Patrick Jane. He winds people up while making impressive deductions… he realises some young boys must know something because one of them is on a pink bike… it makes sense when you see the scene! The resolution is satisfying if not a total surprise. Overall another fun episode.

Witchcraft
claudio_carvalho29 November 2021
When the teenager Cody Ellis goes missing, Patrick and the CBI team look for him. Patrick finds the body in a nearby wood, apparently victim of black magic sacrifice. Lisbon and Patrick interview Cody's parents and brother, and they believe the Wiccan witch Tamzin Dove is the responsible for the sacrifice. They also investigate the coach Dieter, who is a violent man. But Patrick also talks to Cody's brother and once again disclose the mystery.

"Red Rum" is a tragicomic episode of "The Mentalist". Tamzin Dove is very funny and the identity of the killer is a great surprise. My vote is seven.

Anti-wiccan hatefest that should be burned
darkmagickan26 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I do not know if the rest of this series turned out to be any good, because this episode made me want to punch Simon Baker. Not only is it an hour-long attempt by the writers to see how many religious epithets they could work into the dialogue, but it contains blatant lies against Wiccans. We do not cast death curses, ever. We do not cast mind control spells. We do not educate children in our ways without parental permission, because that is how Christians spread their religion. And we NEVER do magick for the sole purpose of showing off. The only thing that saved this episode from destroying the entire series was the fact that they chose NOT to make the Wiccan the killer. If the writers had made a similar episode concerning a Christian, the show would have been shut down. Why are we any different?
