The Grammys are on Sunday, so let’s investigate its most bizarre category: Best New Artist. Both Christopher Cross and Esparanza Spalding have one. That’s real. And that’s why we’re counting down the ten best winners and the five worst losers. Because maybe we’ll learn something! That’s what I’ll go with.
10. Rickie Lee Jones
Rickie Lee may not have had as gigantic a Billboard career following her Best New Artist win as some of the other stars here, but her debut album is such an assured, unpretentiously poetic, rich listening experience. “Chuck E.’s in Love” and “Young Blood” are whimsical and catchy while “Night Train” and “The Last Chance Texaco” are crackling, despairing portraits. She was also so rad, and that made her bohemian folksiness so much fresher than you’d expect.
9. Sade
If timelessness is a criterion for the music and musicians who win Best New Artist,...

"We open governments," states the Twitter bio of WikiLeaks, a whistle-blowing website that broke the story of a U.S. helicopter attack in Iraq three years ago. Over a dozen people were killed, including two Reuters journalists, and despite Reuters' best efforts to obtain the military's video of the video using the Foi act, it remained a mystery. Until WikiLeaks posted the video on a website this week.
WikiLeaks was set up three years ago as a site for leaking sensitive information--and its staff are unpaid. Its mere existence has got the world's security agencies rattled. Last year, the German domain owner of WikiLeaks's hosting service, Prq, had his house raided after an Australian censorship blacklist was released on the site. The Ministry of Defence in the U.K. is also keeping tabs on WikiLeaks, and last week the site claimed that the U.S. government is spying on the organization and its staff.

Another high-profile U.S. series, "Prison Break," is about to get an intriguing foreign treatment -- this time in Russia. Channel One Russia, the leading broadcaster in the territory, is partnering with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution to develop a full 22-episode localized version of the Fox drama series.
The deal marks the broadcaster's first acquisition of a big-budget U.S. drama scripted format from a major Hollywood studio. No financial details of the arrangement were available. Several other Russian broadcasters have successfully customized U.S. dramas, including versions of producer Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" franchise.
Red Square Cinema and Russian Project Studio have been commissioned by Channel One for the series, and a team of top producers and writers has been assembled to adapt the scripted format for its Russian audience. The cast, which is currently under selection, will be announced shortly. Series launch is tentatively scheduled for...

Democrats and Republicans have found something to agree on: Approval of boxoffice betting shouldn't happen too quickly.
California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, both Democrats, co-signed a letter made public Tuesday asking that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission delay a decision as to whether Cantor Exchange and Trend Exchange should be allowed to engage in the trading of movie futures.
Meanwhile, Republican Reps. Bob Goodlatte and Lamar Smith, from Virginia and Texas, respectively, joined Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Beverly Hills, to weigh in with similar requests.
The lawmakers seemingly are taking the side of the MPAA, Iatse, the DGA, the National Association of Theatre Owners and the Independent Film & Television Alliance, which banded together last month to voice their opposition to Cantor and Trend.
Cantor and Trend are separate companies seeking permission to facilitate the trading of futures based on the boxoffice performance of wide-release films.

Basking in the glory of festival and theatrical success of "Vihir", Umesh Kulkarni, is all set to travel to Oberhausen with his latest short film "Vilay" which has been selected for the international competition. Earlier this year his short film "Gaarud" was screened at Rotterdam festival. Nandita Dutta, speaks with the director, whose feature and short films have been the festival favourites of the season.
Tell us something about Vilay and Gaarud?
Both these films were student projects at the Ftii. Both Vilay and Gaarud were also screened at the Clermont Ferrand film festival in France early this year and Gaarud also won the Golden Conch at 11th Mumbai International Film festival of Short, Documentary and Animation films (Miff) 2010 . Gaarud is a thirteen minute film about a shady lodge near a railway station in a small town and the people visiting that lodge.
Vilay is a story that comes from my own experience.

DVD Playhouse: March 2010
By
Allen Gardner
Precious: Based On The Novel “Push” By Sapphire (Lionsgate) In-your-face, but undeniably powerful film that follows the plight of an overweight inner-city teen (Gabourey Sidbe, a real find) who must deal with an abusive mother (Mo’Nique, in a career-making turn for which she won a most-deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar), a baby born of her abusive, and absent, father, and trying to survive day-to-day with few people to offer her help, save for a sympathetic teacher (Paula Patton) in a special ed program. Director/producer Lee Daniels, a former personal manager/producer-turned-filmmaker, brings a kitchen sink authenticity to the proceedings, along with a cast of famous powerhouse performers, who manage to disappear into their roles. Tough stuff, but not to be missed. Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher). Bonuses: Commentary by Daniels; Featurettes; Interviews with Sapphire and Daniels; Deleted scene. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
