How Sarfarosh changed the patriotic film for good. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Not all patriotic movies mentioned the enemy nation by name. It was all about a ‘dushmun desh’ with junior artistes with oriental features and actors made to resemble them, for China (to whom we lost in 1962) was the major enemy! Pakistan as an enemy was rare.
All that changed after Border in 1997, which was a dramatized version of the Longowal battle in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Obviously, Pakistan had to be named and shown here. But Sarfarosh, released in 1999, was the first fictional drama to show our neighboring country openly as the ‘villain’ waging proxy wars. Eerily, the Kargil conflict happened within weeks of its release. And despite our then-Prime Minister’s friendly overtures to them, our recalcitrant neighbour continues to foster terror and express that they want Kashmir!

Aiyaary
Starring Manoj Bajpai, Siddharth Malhotra, Naseeruddin Shah, Rakul Preet Singh
Written & Directed by Neeraj Pandey
At first Aiyaary seems less seamless than it actually is. Where is all this leading to? You wonder at the outset, as writer-director Neeraj Pandey sets up what eventually turns out to be pieces of a jigsaw that fits perfectly into the mindboggling zigzag of India’s political conditioning in contemporary times.
It is very hard to point out plot points inAiyaary that stand out to build the compelling construct on corruption in military forces. It seems miraculous that Siddharth Malhotra, playing an army renegade, is allowed to mouth dialogues that openly castigate the corrupt political system. Illegal arms-deal scams are not only whispered into the commodious plot. The narrative screams in wounded agony at the dizzying heights of corruption in the highest places.
This is no mean achievement.

The great writer William Shakespeare once said, "What's in a name?". Well... ask Neeraj Pandey. The last couple of days saw the name of 'Neeraj Pandey' trending. In Bollywood, the name of 'Neeraj Pandey' is synonymous as the very man who gave us blockbuster films like Baby, Special 26, A Wednesday etc. But, when a certain news of Neeraj Pandey thrown out of the theatres for not standing up on the national anthem had appeared in one of the publications, it shocked the entire tinsel town fraternity. Everyone got a breather when the truth finally surfaced. It so happened was that there was a 'common man' (a 26 year old hailing from Kandivili) who shared the same name as 'Neeraj Pandey' and it was him who was thrown out of a suburban theatre for not standing up during the national anthem. A spokesperson from the 'real' Neeraj Pandey...

It was expected that the coming together on Baby and Dolly Ki Doli would heat up the box office on Friday itself, considering the kind of credentials involved. Though there were no fireworks per se on the opening day as both films didn’t really go on to set the box office on fire, the good part was that the reviews were good. This meant that for the four day long weekend, the Akshay Kumar as well as Sonam Kapoor starrer went on to show jump in collections on a day by day basis.

Baby is Neeraj Pandey’s second outing with Akshay Kumar and his third with Anupam Kher after Special 26 and A Wednesday respectively. It also stars Rana Daggupati (Dum Maaro Dum) and Tapsee Pannu (Chasme Badoor) in pivotal roles.
Arguably, Baby is a film that does not need songs, but a short 4-track album accompanies it all the same. However, it is 4 less then the number of tracks featured in Special 26, which indicates that Pandey does appreciate that his kind of cinema can do without songs.
Baby features compositions from Meet Bros Anjjan (Kick) and Mm Kreem (Special 26) with lyrics by Manoj Muntasir.
The album commences with Beparwah, a welcome departure from Meet Bros Anjjan’s earlier offerings. The engaging orchestrations coupled with Apeksha Dandekar’s powerful rendition of Muntair’s aptly penned lyrics make it for a good listen. Unfortunately, the Mba Swag version of the track is unremarkable.

Neeraj Pandey’s forthcoming film Baby which is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar (T-Series) along with Shital Bhatia, Cape of Good Films & Crouching Tiger brings back the powerful trio together of Director Neeraj himself, Akshay Kumar & Anupam Kher (who gave us Special 26), and joining them as an intriguing ensemble cast are actors Rana Daggubati & Danny Denzongpa.
Those wondering as to the memorably curious movie title of Baby, there is a significant reason why this title has been attached to the film, but currently the makers want to keep it a close guarded secret and let it come out at the right time!!
While the trio’s last flick was high on suspense, Baby will showcase high octane and adrenaline pumping speed action sequences!
We present to you the first look of all the actors from the film together.
Akshay Kumar will be seen portraying the character of Ajay...

Sonali Cable is writer-director Charudatt Acharya’s maiden voyage, being one of the 8 scripts selected for Mumbai Mantra-Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab 2012. It stars Rhea Chakraborty (Meri Dad Ki Maruti), Ali Fazal (Bobby Jasoos) and Anupum Kher (A Wednesday) in pivotal roles. It also marks the debut of Dance India Dance finalist Raghav Juyal.
The soundtrack features compositions from various music directors including Raghav Sachar (‘Kabul Fiza’) and Mike McCleary (Nautanki Sala).
Sonali Cable is produced under the banner of Ramesh and Rohan Sippy and hits cinemas 10 October 2014.
Ek Mulaqat Ho kicks of the album, a well composed track by Amjad-Nadeem of the Ankit Tiwari and/or Jeet Ganguly disposition. Jubin Nautiyal’s superior vocals more than make up for Sameer’s simplistic lyrics. He has a beautiful classical quality yet blends in with the rock ballad like style of the track brilliantly. The unplugged version is equally good. Unfortunately, Altamash...
