Overwrought, contrived plot and a missed opportunity but watchable

After seven years in Australia Fitz, with his wife Judith and youngest son Jack, returns to Manchester for his daughter Katy's wedding. While there an American stand-up comedian is murdered and the police enlist Fitz's help, much to Judith's consternation.

I had lowish expectations for this: I am a great fan of Cracker but suddenly releasing an episode 10 years after the series ended smacks of desperation and being in it just for the money.

The episode started well enough though hand it seemed I was going to be pleasantly surprised. However, the cracks begin to show quite quickly. The plot seems a bit contrived - the murderer just happens to be a cop who happens to always be where the action is. Then there's the overuse of flashbacks - once was enough but every time a scene focused on the murderer we had this long drawn-out flashback sequence. We got the picture the first time round! It felt like pretentious padding.

Throw in some stereotyping of Americans and a political discussion that seems to agree with the murderer's anti-American stance and it's starting to look a bit hammy.

Then there's who's missing: there's no cops from the original series. The producers could at least have jammed Wise or Penhaligon in as a senior officer with a small scene. A reunion between Fitz and Penhaligon would have been great and would have provided the closure on their relationship. A massive missed opportunity, especially as the engagement factor is limited by having to deal with new characters amongst the police.

This said, the broader plot isn't bad and Robbie Coltrane is in good form as Fitz. Overall it's not anywhere as good as the original series but is watchable.

Dinner in fridge, wife in Australia

10 years on from the previous Cracker film and the show returns to Manchester and is back to its best. The cast has changed but the know-it-all Fitz is back along with his long-suffering wife Judith. The characters are credible and probably could have introduced a new generation to the show. Such a shame they didn't bring the show back but a good way to leave it too. A great watch.

Not what it's cracked up to be

It's better than.the previous "special" episode -- White Ghost (1996) -- but it feels like Fitz has been parachuted into a low-cost daytime TV police procedural. It certainly doesn't feel like one of the earlier episodes of Cracker.

Barbara Flynn is back as Judith and Kieran O'Brien is back as Mark, but all the other original cast members are absent. Richard Cole is an adequate comic actor, but he is massively miscast here as DI Walters.

This is better written than White Ghost (1996), but it doesn't feel at all like the Cracker of old. Please give this episode a miss. Just pretend that Cracker ended with the far, far, superior True Romance story.

okay Warning: Spoilers
10 years on from when the orginal series ended in 90s .. fitz is back with his wife and children are much older now and have familys of their own. Alot of the orginal cast are missing so its very different ..not as good as show was in 90s which made it very good and the chemistry is not as great .. not really set around the police station like the it was in the 90s no penhaligan, beck or any of orginal cast who were a core characters in the ones in the 90s probably should of just made more with the original cast back then then ended it ...its okay but doenst really have the vibe of the orginal 90s.

One long, anti-American screed

Absolutely HORRIBLE way to end an otherwise stellar series. Terrible to both British and American troops, accusing THEM of being the terrorists. Also extremely disrespectful to Americans who supported the troops, as well as perpetuating to stereotype of the EXTREME Ugly American. Frankly, I wasn't saddened by the murders, since they were Americans BASHING America on foreign soil - also, they made it plain that they considered themselves SUPERIOR to "other" Americans because they were from New York. The episode was complete poltical garbage from start to finish and a shame to go out on that note.
