Intelligent, Independent Women Change Industry
robinwestmiller-0888321 September 2023
When I first read about this documentary, I thought "who cares about plastic "super" models" but then I started watching it and was really impressed. How these four women transformed the modeling industry, changed as it evolved and maintained their dignity and respect in an industry that strips women of both much too often is very inspirational. Fighting off the critics just because they were being assertive, especially when it came to salary, making no excuses for demanding what they were worth, when women were told to shut up and just walk! May they continue to shine on the cover of Vogue well into their 80's!

Who do we think we are?

Great watch! Well done doc. The story hits all sides of the fashion industry whether its good or bad. It maybe seem a bit one sided but from listening to the news and stories from the past years everything rings true.

It takes me back though to how I thought when I was younger to now where I am a father to a little girl. Would I support this lifestyle? Would I be able to defend and support my daughter if she was being exploited?

I am glad this came out when it did if for no other reason than to make me think. How can I approach situations better, how can I be better for my daughter?

Much respect for the women in the doc sharing their experiences!

Thoroughly Enjoyed It.

What a gloriously sweet & glamorous slide down memory lane.

Most young men at the time had a favourite (Christy for me) whereas many liked Cindy.

But these women were unobtainable & we knew it and we were okay with it. They represented glamour & a world we working class kids didn't really understand. But that was okay too, because we understood beauty & dreams.

I've read a couple of articles reviewing the series that criticise the lack of indepth journalistic probing. These critics have completely lost the point & the plot. That's like criticising Disney cartoons for a lack of animal welfare storylines.

This show is as these ladies' careers were: dramatic, fun, optimistic & most of all, glamorous.

Nostalgic heterosexual male thoroughly enjoyed it.

Why? And for what?

Warning: Spoilers
I thought I would learn new things .

There is nothing .

There is nothing that is interesting in this entire 4 episode show.

The old pictures are great. The stories about how these women started in modeling is fine - but all old news .

The real stuff is smoothed over. The predators in this industry are not exposed - except linda's ex-'who claims he's a scapegoat/ which is clearly IS. A foul person- but he's not atypical and they never expose anyone else.

Cindy Crawford pretending that her daughter is famous on her own is the huge joke . And cute - but so disgusting to people in the real world.

It's just sad. Overall.

Very uncritical documentary produced by the subjects

Warning: Spoilers
As much as I wanted to like this documentary: unfortunately it failed on many fronts. I understand the supermodels' reason to make this 4 parter on their legacy control the narrative & sell the package to AppleTV+. Too bad it became such a soft fluff. Yes, Linda's health issues in part 4 brought some depths. But it's never a good thing if a documentary is dictated by its subjects. Hearing Naomi's closest friendliness fans what a good person she is? Really?

Giving a great documentarian autonomy could have made this fluff piece noteworthy and worth watching. As someone who has lived in the supers' times of glory there was hardly anything new I haven't seen or heard before. Yes, it was a stroll through memory lane, but it could have been so much better.

Depressing first episode that I couldn't finish

Warning: Spoilers
I had to stop shortly after I heard Cindy Crawford telling us about her traumatizing experience where her hair got cut short without her consent. Then another woman talked about how models were practically living hangers. These are the women with tens of million dollars in net worth - why their account of their youth sounded so depressing? What would it be then for the remainder of four billion women and girls on earth who don't have that kind of power and wealth/status.

Their photos had made a lot of us feel "less than" and "what we don't have" for a long time. There's no need to bring that back. I don't know why any women would be interested in this series.
