The Inside
Stars: Tereza Srbova, Emmett J. Scanlan, Sean Stewart, Natalia Kostrzewa, Brian Fortune | Written and Directed by Eoin Macken
Opening with a man pawning a ring for 75 euros and a camcorder, all accompanied by the voiceover of a radio DJ talking about three girls going missing of the streets of Dublin, The Inside soon transforms into yet another found-footage film as the man discovers the camcorder still has a tape in it and plays it back. However what he sees isn’t merely footage of a group of girls on a night out, but footage of the girls descent into madness and the very depths of hell.
I absolutely hated (and I really mean hated) The Inside for the first 35 minutes of its running time. Shot in a first person perspective, the film started out with a group of obnoxious girls on a night out. It then descended into...

We’ve been following filmmaker John Michael Elfer’s Kiss Before the Slaughter since its down and dirty desert shoot earlier this year, and now we are proud to offer you, our Dread Central readers, an early look at the project's high-octane trailer! Read on!
Voted onto the ‘Blood List’ of 2010 (an industry insider list of the top not-yet-produced horror scripts in Hollywood), Kiss Before the Slaughter follows the exploits of ex-paramours Bradley and Raquel (actors Chandler Maness and Natalie Pero, respectively), who journey to Mexico for a black-market lung transplant for the latter, only to discover an underground organization who butcher the unsuspecting ‘donors’ on which Raquel had relied. Struggling with both their mortality and morality, Raquel asks Bradley - in an effort to save the group of complete strangers which the organization have ensnared as ‘donors’ - that instead he let her die. Needless to say, all hell breaks loose.

Despite getting into cinema due to horror films, I have found myself falling out of love with the genre quite recently. I think the main reason is, for most part, the horror film has become far too post-modern and self-referential. From Scream to Hostel to the recent glut of Platinum Dune retreads. Almost everything thing I was managing to check out was a nudge or a wink to something done.
If they’re not paying homage to a specific era, then it was nodding in its general direction. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. However, there was enough to put me off for a while. For some reason however I felt it would be a great idea to snap the assignment for Finale, a low budget horror film which pays homage to the giallo cycle and Clive Barker. Sucker for punishment, I know.
Finale left me frustrated for more than a couple reasons.

Back in October FilmShaft went up to Manchester to check out the Grimm Up North horror festival and saw some pretty cool stuff. One of those ‘cool’ films, Finale, is a Satanic chiller about a family battling an evil cult in small town America. It’s visual aesthetic apes the sort of low rent flick Lucio Fulci made after his glory days were over, and it works very well.
Although it didn’t start off promising at all, John Michael Elfers film turned into something of an unexpected delight. And now it’s appearing on DVD from Monday 14th March. Check out festival review here, and the press release below:
In the style of Dario Argento, ‘Finale’ is a stylish and surreal horror film with all the hallmarks of a cult classic. It is of low budget and independent origins and has enjoyed much success on the USA festival circuit...

This past Halloween weekend FilmShaft was entrenched at the Grimm Up North Horror and Sci-Fi Festival in Manchester for three days of horror entertainment. It was a case of the good, the bad and the ugly. Isn’t it always?
The great thing about the programme was the variety. There was interpretations of horror from around the world. Although the Dancehouse has a certain faded and decayed opulence in an art deco kind of way, the sound wasn’t amazing and the screen wasn’t the best. But one images this is what it was like to watch a film in the days before the multiplex and Thx sound.
Below is a selection of what movies stood out and for various reasons.

Grimmupnorth 2010 is coming to Manchester for a second time this Halloween! Readers may remember last year’s coverage from the first Grimmfest last October ‘09. Well, we’re going back for more this year too. Festival director Simeon Halligan and his crew have spent all year finding some amazing new titles to screen at Manchester’s biggest horror film festival, including Evil: In The Time Of Heroes, which I missed at Eiff so am well up for seeing. There’s also the inventively named Canadian shocker, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, the Japanese genre mash-up Alien Vs Ninja, Thai thriller Slice, Zombie mock-u-mentary Reel Zombies and a horror doc featuring all kinds of industry insiders, The Splat Pack. There’s also a ton of activities and seminars for festival goers to participate in too. Personally I’m looking forward to the special screening for my favourite Argento film, Deep Red.

Image Entertainment will release Finale from director John Michael Elfers on DVD May 25th and the film is somewhat of a throwback to Italian Giallo. What can I say about Sybil Danning that would be a surprise to anyone? Gorgeous, talented, fun to watch. In whatever project she appears, Danning is always completely committed. Watching her as I have over the years, I see not only chops, but a healthy sense of humor as well. I feel like she “gets it,” if that makes any sense. (And after this interview, I’m even more of a fan.) Courtesy of friend Fred Olen Ray, Danning joins all the vampire fun on The Lair in this third season.
