Season 3 is off to a great start
evansjoshyr15 October 2021
The format of couples therapy is a great structure for this episode. We see most of the events through flashbacks as we see Joe and Love work through their very complicated relationship. Of course, they can't tell their therapist... everything. Reminds me a little of the sopranos.

Also the sequence of them "building a life together" and "trusting one another" yet still planting precautions just in case is excellent. It really sums up their relationship.

Another great episode. Even better than the first one.

Strongest episode so far!

Joe and Love are deeply traumatised people who make bad impulsive decisions but this episode just makes you understand why they both are so emotionally unstable and really make you feel for them!

[7.2] For now at least

Dismal continuation of episode 1 with lots of fillers and parenting, the latter strangely being the good part of it. Also, mostly unrealistic situations and behaviors with their neighbors and wannabe "friends".

Lacking steam, pace and strength, which were the brilliance of seasons 1 and 2. For now at least...

Love is what that matters

After the first episode the only direction it was going was a total mayhem. Love is what it is and love is what everything is for and love is what matters to joe at the end of the day.

Something's never change's

Wow. What a coincidence that was!

Notice how they talked about their vows in episode 1 and now they vividly made new vows(i would kill for you). That was something. But the best bart about this episode is the idea that even if they love each other the most but after what they have seen from each other there will always be 0.01% scared of abandon or betray.

Interesting shift Warning: Spoilers
Note I'm writing this after viewing the 1st 3 eps, but my review for ep 3 is from a different angle due to the direction that ep took.

Season 3 faced the danger of becoming repetitive with Joe once again becoming obsessed with a stranger. Though I'd have liked the Natalie plot line to have been stretched out a bit with a little more detail given on her and her motives, Joe's usual obsession, as well as the overall narrative, have been given some interesting twists that show promise in keeping the story fresh.

For starters, becoming a dad has affected Joe deeply, and it's presented an opportunity to build on the complexity of Joe's character. Part of what makes Joe an appealing and even sympathetic figure, despite being a serial killer, is he's not a one dimensional character. He's capable of developing deep emotional attachments outside of his obsessions and has displayed some very protective instincts in the past. Watching him struggle to bond with his son offers deeper insight as well as some rather touching, poignant moments that juxtapose nicely with his more violent tendencies. We also get some nicely ironic moments like Joe and Love arguing over where Henry should be while they dig up a dead body, with Love stating not leaving a child in a car is parenting 101.

But parenthood is not the only new role Joe finds himself in. He's used to being on his own and in control. However, he's now married to Love, who knows him and recognizes the signs of his obsession manifesting, so he can no longer hide. Further, Love killing Natalie undermines his control on a number of levels. He's pledged himself to curbing his impulses, though given his psychopathy it's unlikely he can maintain it. However, he's then forced to deal with the consequences of Love's impulses.

This leads to possibly the best new element, couples therapy. Unlike many people who enter into therapy, Joe and Love don't completely hide their darker moments. They find ways to discuss the elements that are central to their conflict without revealing those that would land them in prison. It allows for the therapist to actually help them while offering some revealing insights, many of which are presented in a darkly humorous way. We also get a nice twist with Love, via flashback, revealing Joe had not actually been that successful in suppressing his obsessive impulses.

Ultimately this leads to the two identifying the root cause of much of their behavior, and it turns out to be the same - fear of abandonment. This allows them to rediscover the feelings that initially brought them together and to move forward as a team, though it's revealed they both still feel the need for a backup plan. I think this is a positive direction, as Joe's former animosity for Love could have only ended one way, one that would have been detrimental to the show. Bringing them together as a loving couple trying to overcome their psychotic sides and be good parents leading a normal life adds another layer to both of their characters. Watching them struggle with this against the backdrop of hiding the fact they killed their next door neighbor and buried the body is what promises to make this season worth watching.

Happily Dexter After
bmcraec31 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
They really went there. Foreshadowing the whole superhero/villain origin story. Specifically, the frequent Buffy allusions, and the need for alter-egos, and a code. We even have mentors; Joe's being Moody, the Soviet prison guard, and architect of that inanimate regular cast member, The Vault. Love's mentor must be her mother, though it's primacy is greyer than with Joe. That's how this might appear to anyone familiar enough with the relatively nuanced curation from the artisanal trope farm. It's well-managed, if sometimes a bit hard going. Whether that's crudely assembled classic elements, or successfully engaging the audience is a matter of opinion, possibly correlated to the viewer's mood while watching. Personally speaking, this isn't as easy to binge as many other shows. Adding the library set is genius. Delivering more than abundant subtext by curating the titles in the library? What's not to enjoy?

Lots of parenting squabbles and uninteresting therapy sessions. This episode felt like filler, very boring, slow, and unrealistic (more so than usual). I hope the season gets better.

Managed to stabilize to a decent level, then all went to crap again in about two seconds, with some new character and a social gathering, yuk. Can't of been this bad last season or I wouldn't be here.

Couple's Therapy
vivianla29 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Love kills Natalie which enrages Joe. They go to couple's therapy and flashbacks are shown. Love meets Theo, a younger man who gives her a lot of attention. They bury the body out in the woods but after realizing there are rings with trackers, they bury her in a site to be filled with cement. Henry the baby is so cute with his pacifier. There is a breakthrough in therapy where they realize they are mirrors of each other and it is difficult to be with someone so similar. The therapist says the sex will be better, very primal due to the trust. They have sex later and it is very passionate. Love goes next door to give cupcakes and Theo opens the door. He is Matthew's son from his first marriage.
