Armie Hammer made headlines once again this week when he compared Casey Affleck unfavorably to Nate Parker, in whose “The Birth of a Nation” Hammer co-starred. He later apologized for his remarks — which had to do with Affleck (who settled two sexual-harassment lawsuits) winning an Oscar the same year that Parker (who was accused of rape in college) appeared to lose all his career momentum — but someone else was paying attention: Spike Lee.
Lee was asked about the situation in a Daily Beast interview, responding in typically fashion that “there were some shenanigans there” and “it was a dirty, low-down shame.”

Armie Hammer has issued an apology to Casey Affleck, after calling out Affleck over what he perceived to be a “double standard” over misconduct in the entertainment industry. Hammer initially made the comment in a Hollywood Reporter story, pointing out that Affleck had been accused of sexually harassing crew members while making the film “I’m Still Here” in 2010, but still managed to take home an Oscar for “Manchester by the Sea” this year, while “Birth of a Nation” director Nate Parker had suffered career repercussions over a prior sexual assault accusation. Woody Allen’s daughter Dylan Farrow is asking why her father has been spared in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the subsequent #MeToo movement.
“Why is it that Harvey Weinstein and other accused celebrities have been cast out by Hollywood, while Allen recently secured a multimillion-dollar distribution deal with Amazon …?” Farrow wrote in an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times on Thursday.
“The system worked for Harvey Weinstein for decades. It works for Woody Allen still,” she added.

Kate Winslet is praising Woody Allen’s feminine side.
“I think on some level Woody is a woman,” the actress, who stars in the controversial director’s new film Wonder Wheel, recently told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“I just think he’s very in touch with that side of himself. He understands the female characters he creates exceptionally well,” she added. “His female characters are always so rich and large and honest in terms of how they’re feeling and he just knows how to write dialogue for them to communicate all that.”

If the opening shot of Justice League wrong-footed you, then rest assured: it wasn’t only regular audiences who were left startled by Superman’s uncanny valley face. A brief scene designed to reintroduce a gentler, kinder First Son of Krypton, the superhero epic’s opening instead sparked widespread discussions about Henry Cavill’s top lip.
As was commonly reported before Justice League’s release, the cast of DC-Warner’s movie were recalled for extensive reshoots during post-production, during which time Cavill had already signed up for a role in Mission: Impossible 6 - a part that required him to grow a moustache.

The former couple met up to take their daughters -- Violet, 11 and Seraphina, 8 -- out for ice cream at Rori's Artisanal Creamery in Santa Monica, California.
An eyewitness tells Et that Affleck gave Garner a hug and a kiss on the head, however she "looked to not enjoy the Pda."
Affleck seemed to get along well with his daughters as they snacked on ice cream and left with their dad after the get-together. Affleck and Garner, who also share 5-year-old son Samuel, filed for divorce in April after two years of separation.

In this week’s missile of a The New York Times story about the many alleged indiscretions of Harvey Weinstein, one of his past colleagues, former Miramax Los Angeles president Mark Gill, describes Weinstein’s professional climb from indie producer to Hollywood titan. “From the outside, it seemed golden — the Oscars, the success, the remarkable cultural impact.” Yet Gill said the persistent whispers that Weinstein was mistreating women were in fact “the biggest mess of all.”
While The Weinstein Co. co-founder publicly championed women’s rights, his accusers say that he was a hypocrite, secretly propositioning them for massages, kisses and more. One month after Weinstein distributed “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about rapes on university campuses, he allegedly groped a college-aged woman in his office. Weinstein, 65, has a well-documented, on-the-record history of unflattering behavior, even against women (like in 2002, when he publicly berated director Julie Taymor at a screening of her film,...

In case you missed it: Warner Bros and DC have announced two separate Joker movies, one that will star Jared Leto, reprising his role from Suicide Squad, and one that will not.
First came the announcement that Martin Scorsese, The Hangover’s Todd Phillips and 8 Mile’s Scott Silver are working on a Leto-free Joker origin movie. Deadline broke that piece of news, reporting that this project will be “the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named”. This banner will allow Warner Bros to “expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.”
Then, the very next day, the Tracking Board broke a different story: Warners has John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy Stupid Love,...

Hans Zimmer has found a project worthy of following “Dunkirk”: Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” The prolific composer is reportedly taking over scoring duties from longtime Villeneuve composer Johan Johannsson, reports Vanity Fair.

Hailing from Iceland, Johannsson penned the scores for “Sicario,” “Prisoners,” and “Arrival,” all of which were directed by Villeneuve. He also composed Darren Aronofksy’s “Mother!,” in theaters this September. Though he will still be involved in a smaller capacity, it will be as a backseat to Zimmer and his “Dunkirk” collaborator Benjamin Wallfisch.
In addition to scoring “Dunkirk,” Zimmer has kept busy this year; he not only toured the U.S. for the first time, but was heard shredding at Coachella. He stopped by “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” to play his sweeping soundtrack for “Planet Earth II,...

Universal Studios is trying to bring a lot of star power to its planned Shared Monster-verse. The latest rumor is that Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson will sign with Universal to play the Wolf Man in multiple films. Will the Rock’s star power help make the Universal Monsters Shared Continuity a success?
Universal Studios is a little late getting on-board the shared Universe train (which is ironic since they actually created the first shared Universe in 1943 when Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man came out) and they’re trying to stack the deck with big stars to help their shared monster-verse have the same success that Disney is having with Marvel films. So far, they’ve nailed down Tom Cruise for a Mummy remake (due out June 2017) and Johnny Depp for a new Invisible Man film (due April 2018). Russell Crowe is appearing as Dr. Jekyll in The Mummy which will probably lead to a Dr.

From Justice League Dark and The Batman to Lobo and Man Of Steel 2 - the DC movies that await a greenlight...
Big spoilers lie ahead for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
Whichever side of the imaginary rivalry you fall into, there's no denying that when it comes to movies, DC has got some catching up to do. In the same year as Marvel Studios released their first major crossover, The Avengers, Warner Bros released The Dark Knight Rises, the final chapter in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Batman trilogy, which was firmly grounded in the notion that Bruce Wayne is the world's only superhero.
Nolan's disinterest in the larger DC toybox left Warners a few steps behind Disney and Marvel, especially after the failure of 2010's Jonah Hex and 2011's Green Lantern, the latter of which was intended as the first step into a wider universe.

Social Network writer Sorkin, who is making his directorial debut, says chemistry between Elba and Jessica Chastain will be ‘electric’
Idris Elba will star opposite Jessica Chastain in Aaron Sorkin’s directing debut Molly’s Game, the true story of a poker organiser whose illegal high-stakes games drew Hollywood glitterati such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Chastain has signed up to play Molly Bloom, dubbed the “poker princess”, a former skier who spent eight years running exclusive games for high-end clientele until she was arrested by the FBI in 2014. Elba will play Bloom’s lawyer, who learns that there’s much more to his client than tabloid newspaper reports have led the public to believe.

Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara has officially confirmed that Ben Affleck will star in and probably direct a solo Batman film. No date has been given for the film yet.
The news we all knew was coming was finally announced by Warner Bros today at CinemaCon 2016 in Las Vegas. Kevin Tsujihara, head honcho at WB, revealed that Academy Award winner Ben Affleck—who vindicated himself to a legion of skeptical fans that lambasted him brutally when he was chosen as the new Batman—will definitely star in a solo Batman vehicle, which will be part of the expanded Dceu. Tsujihara also used the word “filmmaker” when describing Affleck’s involvement in the project, inferring that Affleck will likely be directing and perhaps even writing (Although he didn't outright say that). Affleck—who told the Hollywood Reporter last month that he had a “really cool idea” for a Batman...

One of the things that excites me about the news that Ben Affleck has already turned in a solo Batman script is that we’ve never seen an actor write his own Batman film before. While I like many of the screen interpretations of the character that have come before, the actors who wear that suit have a perspective on how that feels that no one else does. If you’re someone like Affleck who has spent time in that cowl, it has to impact how you think about the character and his relationship to the world around him. It just has to. Overall, I am curious to see how long Affleck stays attached to the part. He’s contracted, obviously, for both of the Justice League movies and he makes a cameo (at least) in Suicide Squad later this year. The cover story of the Hollywood Reporter that was...

Chicago – Dang it, DC Comics and Warner Bros.! Two of my favorite comic book characters get dragged through a dull mud in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” There is a dawn all right, but instead of the bright sun over the horizon, it’s a full mooning to the fans who anticipated the film.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The stiff Henry Cavill and Batfleck (Tm, ha ha) – Ben Affleck – portray Superman and The Batman as initial rivals, and the script has them going through a mass of complex issues, and silly dream sequences, while a blaring soundtrack gives them “walking (or flying) music” for virtually any instance in the film – seriously, there is walking music for Bruce Wayne going downstairs at a party. The first hour and 15 minutes or so is death, as the set-up doesn’t even get them into costume for “reals” until that point. Afterward, the film perks up a bit,...

Believe it or not, 2015 is half done already - and the past six months have delivered some top-notch television, much of it brand new drama, comedy and documentaries.
Picking the finest from a particularly fine crop was no easy task, but these were our rules: it had to launch in 2015, it must have aired one series / season in its entirety and it had to be a continuing series.
So no-one off pieces - e.g. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - and nothing that got the chop - sorry, Banished.
Here - in original broadcast order - are the DS Staff Picks from the year so far.
Marvel's Agent Carter - Morgan Jeffery, TV Editor
Hopes were high for Marvel's Agent Carter - not least because fans had been clamouring for a series featuring Hayley Atwell's heroine ever since her 2013 One-Shot short film.

Leonardo DiCaprio tops the most recent salary chart for Hollywood's A-list actors. His quote for a blockbuster-type film like "The Wolf of Wall Street" these days is $25 million. Performers in the $20 million club are Sandra Bullock, Matt Damon, Robert Downey, Jr., Angelina Jolie, and Denzel Washington. Following the success of American Sniper," Bradley Cooper is now expecting $15-20 million per film. Just behind are Ben Affleck and Channing Tatum, depending on the type of role. Also in that ballpark are Jennifer Lawrence, Melissa McCarthy, Mark Wahlberg, and Dwayne Johnson (for an action movie). Two of the most popular and well-known supporting characters in the Batman mythos are Commissioner James Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth, the faithful butler. Both men are a part of the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but what can we expect to see in this new interpretation of the Dcu? (Potential Spoilers Below)
When Batman meets Superman in the much anticipated Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the dark knight will be bringing some of his traditional supporting characters along with him. Not surprisingly, Alfred the butler will be back to assist the caped crusader in his latest incarnation (played by the much maligned Ben Affleck), portrayed this time around by Jeremy Irons (Die Hard With a Vengeance, the Man in the Iron Mask, the Time Machine). Movie-goers paying attention to the credits for Gone Girl may have found themselves wondering why Reese Witherspoon didn't wind up starring alongside Ben Affleck in the acclaimed drama. The actress served as a producer on the film, and since she is roughly around the same age as Rosamund Pike, some might find it curious why she didn't end up taking the role of Amy Dunne for herself. Now that query has been answered, as Witherspoon has revealed that it all came down to what sounds like a frank conversation she had with director David Fincher. Reese Witherspoon was recently a participant in a Hollywood Reporter-organized roundtable that saw her seated alongside the likes of Julianne Moore, Laura Dern, Hilary Swank, Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette, and during the conversation the Academy Award-winning actress explained why she didn't end up with the titular role in Gone Girl. She noted that...

He can pretty much have any role he wants, so it’s a little curious that Leonardo DiCaprio has decided to pull his name from consideration for the lead in the forthcoming Steve Jobs biopic.
According to a Hollywood Reporter source, the “Titanic” star has elected to forego the project in favor of focusing more time, energy and attention on his lead part for “The Revenant,” based on the life of legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass.
Once Leo finishes with the flick and fulfills his promotional obligations, rumor has it he’ll take a long hiatus from acting, so the Jobs movie just won’t work out.
Given DiCaprio’s departure, Sony Pictures has begun talking with Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Christian Bale.

Leonardo DiCaprio will not be tackling the role of Steve Jobs in a film biopic after all. He was set to play the late Apple Computer co-founder for Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle but will now make the film "The Revenant" instead. The hot script is by Emmy and Oscar champ Aaron Sorkin ("The West Wing," "The Social Network") and is one of the "most anticipated" in recent years. Sony is reportedly now looking to several other big names as possibilties for the lead role, including Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, or Bradley Cooper.
