" . . . I'm a bit slower; not as fit," Sean Connery says to his BBC interviewer around the time of his filming DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. Since Sean had had his fifth turn as Agent 007 just FOUR years previously in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, it's apparent the intervening time period took an even greater toll on his mental faculties. During this five-minute Q & A, Connery discloses that the only Ian Fleming Bond novels he had read through 1971 were THUNDERBALL, LIVE AND LET DIE, as well as FROM RUSS1A WITH LOVE. A proud Scotsman, Connery brags about bringing the first world film premier to the Highlands in the vehicle of his just released THE ANDERSON TAPES. I believe he says that he's also running a used car business, but he's sort of mumbling so I'm not 100 percent positive about that. The interviewer concludes by asking Connery if he's likely to appear in any of the five Bond stories Unfilmed as of 1971, to which Sean replies: "Absolutely not; I have no desire to have 100 million or 150 million pounds" (referring to a Scottish monetary unit). Ironically, an even more decrepit 53-year-old Connery reprized Bond in a 1983 renegade (that is, non-Eon Studios) 007 adventure, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. (That title implies we can count on Connery being announced as the octogenarian Bond any day now.)
