Since Metallic Rouge was announced at Fuji TV Anime Lineup Presentation 2023, it was clear that the new anime series from the prestigious Bones studio would be an emotive way to commemorate the first 25 years of the company made by ex-key members of Sunrise Studio (now Bandai Namco Filmworks). Most anime enthusiasts know Bones for series like My Hero Academia , Fullmetal Alchemist (both adaptations), Bungo Stray Dogs , Mob Psycho 100 and movies like Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish . So, why is Metallic Rouge so perfect to celebrate Bones’ first 25 years? Impressive Original Stories As a futuristic mystery thriller, the strongest element of the story is how Toshizo Nemoto ( Log Horizon ) and Yutaka Izubuchi ( Space Battleship Yamato 2199 ) tell the story of...

Debuting in 2021, “Words Bubble Up Like Soda-pop” was an original anime film from FlyingDog released directly to Netflix. The movie embraced the production company's proven record for creating vibrant and expressive titles with a solid visual direction. Consequently, the manga adaptation, tasked to Imo Oono to reenvision the art, is a cumbersome undertaking in stripping the lush color pallet and relaxing vibes of the anime into a different medium.

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man has torn through its competition as one of 2023’s most popular anime obsessions and its English dub has met just as much acclaim as the original. Makima is a mysterious and occasionally malevolent force of nature who works as well as she does because of Suzie Yeung’s committed performance as the devious devil hunter. Makima is one of Yeung’s biggest roles, but she’s hardly a newcomer. At this year’s Anime Milwaukee, Suzie Yeung reflected to Den of Geek upon her eclectic career and opened up on the whirlwind experience of playing Chainsaw Man’s Makima, the type of characters that get her the most excited, and what her anime Holy Grail dream role would be.
Den Of Geek: You’ve covered a diverse range of characters in your career, but is there a specific type of personality that you get especially excited to play,...

Korean actor Shin Se-kyong, star of “Tazza: Another Card” and current TV series “Run On,” is the subject of “Another Record,” an unusual documentary film being launched this week at the Asian Contents & Film Market. Showbox, one of Korea’s longest-running film production, distribution and sales companies, is handling rights sales.
The company is pitching “Another Record” as “the unknown story of the well-known Shin Se-kyeong.” Given Shin’s current popularity and her huge social media following (45 million YouTube views of her content) anonymity seems an unlikely status. But the film attempts a fly on the wall approach.
Rather than conduct straightforward interviews with the actor, the film follows Shin as she takes a walk around Seoul, meeting various people, has food, and stops for drinks. While sharing stories, Shin tells parts of her story that she had never revealed before.
The film is directed by Kim Jong-kwan, who previously...

Quebec’s Fantasia Festival has unveiled the third and final wave of titles set to screen at this year’s 25th edition and announced that Takashi Miike’s latest feature “The Great Yokai War – Guardians,” will close the festival. The world premiere of Julien Knafo’s Quebec zombie flic “Brain Freeze” will open the festival following an Aug. 4 pre-fest screening of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad.”
“The Great Yokai War- Guardians” is the follow-up to Fantasia 2006 opener “The Great Yoki War,” and unspools in a fantasy world of Japanese demons, kaiju and pop culture references which proved a hit in Montreal the first time around.
Other key titles featured in the third wave lineup include Lee Won-tae’s “The Devil’s Deal,” his first film since “The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil” won Sitges’ best film award in 2019. BAFTA-winner Paul Andrew Williams’ (“Murdered for Being Different”) “Bull,” a revenge thriller,...

Remaking highly regarded works is often a difficult, and occasionally a thankless task. It requires a level of staying true to the material it is based on, but nonetheless an original spin, and a narrative which takes the audience to a place it has not been to before. In that regard, “Josee”, the remake of the 2003 Japanese film “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish”, both of which are based on the award-winning short story of the same name, works to a degree, but in a similar fashion to a large portion of remodelled movies, fails to lack the ultimate punch that its predecessor so succinctly offered.
“Josee” is screening at the Florence Korea Film Fest
At the heart of the story are two characters of a similar age, but yet two people with completely contrary lives and perspectives. Firstly, there is Young-seok (Nam Joo-hyuk), a confident college student who takes things as they come,...
