Edmund North: The Man Who Made the Earth Stand Still (2008)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Exceptionally well-made and informative featurette about writer and Oscar-winner Edmund North who most remember for his screenplays to THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, SINK THE BISMARK and PATTON. The featurette runs just 14-minutes but it's a pretty good overview of the writers life and career including how he ended up in Hollywood, his WWII service and how when he returned to Hollywood his views on war had changed, which led to the Robert Wise classic as well as the writer taking on other subjects including the blacklisted writers from one of the darkest eras in Hollywood's history. Two of North's daughters are interviewed as well as director Lewis Gilbert and film historian John Cork. Fans of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL are going to enjoy this documentary and if you're a fan of North you're going to enjoy the interviews here. If you're unfamiliar with his work then obviously you're going to get some good details here on the type of man he was and why his writing was so popular throughout Hollywood.
