We knew Discovery was different from the start. Pitched as a prequel to The Original Series, the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery had a ton of references to the first Trek series, including Michael Burnham as Spock’s adopted sister, which also meant appearances from Sarek and Amanda Grayson, as well as Kirk’s predecessor Captain Pike.
The most audacious connection to The Original Series came with the revelation that Discovery‘s Captain Gabriel Lorca came from the Mirror Universe, that evil alternate dimension first introduced in the Tos season two episode “Mirror, Mirror.” In that 1967 episode, written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Marc Daniels, an ion storm disrupts Kirk’s attempt to beam back to the Enterprise, causing him to materialize abroad on the alternate-universe Iss Enterprise, part of the Terran Empire.

Star Trek: Discovery co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman previously told TVLine that the sci-fi drama’s fifth and final season was dependent on a “very significant” Star Trek Easter egg, and we finally know what he meant by that.
The season’s first two episodes, which are now streaming on Paramount+, sent the Discovery crew on one last adventure to find the missing clues spread throughout the galaxy that will lead them to the ancient device used by an ancient species, known as the Progenitors, to create life as we know it.

Shields up! This article contains major spoilers for the season 5 premiere of "Star Trek: Discovery."
Who knew that "Star Trek: Discovery" would be saving its biggest reveal for last? After being responsible for kickstarting the new era of "Trek" on streaming, the fifth and final season is signaling the beginning of the end for the flagship series. But as fans would expect, the opening episode proves the writing team has no intentions of taking its final bow without crafting one last adventure worthy of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Mr. Saru (Doug Jones), and the rest of the Discovery crew. So perhaps it was inevitable that the biggest twist of the young season would have its roots in one of the most game-changing hours of "Trek" lore ever.
Trekkies will no doubt remember the classic "Next Generation" episode "The Chase," which first introduced the extinct race known as the Progenitors.

Game Show Network is bulking up its stable of original series, adding three new strip series to its lineup. As announced on Tuesday morning as part of its 2024 upfronts pitch to advertisers, Game Show Network revealed it has ordered a new version of classic gamer “Tic Tac Dough,” this time hosted by Brooke Burns, as well as a U.S. version of the U.K. format “Beat the Bridge,” to be hosted by Cameron Mathison.
Also at Gsn, the network will air episodes of the recently announced syndicated game show “Flip Side,” hosted by Jaleel White (“Family Matters”). News comes as Game Show Network also recently launched the comedy gamer “Blank Slate,” hosted by Mario Lopez, in January, as well as new episodes of “Split Second,” hosted by John Michael Higgins, and “Switch,” hosted by Jeff Hephner.
“Beat the Bridge” will premiere in June, with “Tic Tac Dough” in August and “Flip Side” in September.

Jeopardy! Masters champion James Holzhauer has called out ABC after the network got his name wrong in a promo for The Chase. The clip, which has now been deleted from social media, referred to the quiz show king as “James Hightower.” Whether it was an unintentional spelling error or an attempt to rebrand the self-confessed super-villain as a kind of long-lost Game of Thrones character, we don’t know. Holzhauer, however, made sure to grab a screenshot and shared the image with his followers, simply tweeting, “sigh” alongside the picture (see below). sigh pic.twitter.com/pcZizQaaoo — James Holzhauer (@James_Holzhauer) July 18, 2023 The embarrassing mistake came in a promo hyping Holzhauer’s return for the season finale of The Chase on Thursday, July 20. A local TV reporter broke some unexpected personal news while investigating what she thought was a very real tragedy.
Valerie Bell, an investigative reporter for Alabama’s ABC 33/40 News, thought she was meeting with authorities earlier this month to discuss the specifics of a domestic violence call that ended with someone going into a lake. What she didn’t know was that the entire scenario was concocted so that her boyfriend could surprise her with the proposal of her dreams.

The ratings for Thursday, February 17, 2023, are in, and while there was some good news for some shows, there was bad news for others.
Fox kicked off its revamped Thursday night schedule, and the results were mixed.
Next Level Chef delivered 1.9 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo -- down considerably from its Super Bowl lead-in on Sunday.
But the numbers were still decent for an unscripted series.
Animal Control opened with 2.1 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.
The series was a significant improvement on its predecessor Welcome to Flatch.
Call Me Kat followed with 1.5 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.
CBS went with Young Sheldon (7.1 million/0.6 rating), Ghosts (6.4 million/0.6 rating), and CSI: Vegas (2.9 million viewers/0.2 rating).
The numbers for CSI mark new series lows for the series, which isn't good news as we inch toward upfronts.
NBC's Law & Order franchise was relatively stable, with the original series posting 4.6 million/0.5 rating,...

This article contains Star Trek: Picard spoilers.
Not all Star Trek Easter eggs are created equal. Some are as obvious as a phaser set on vaporize, and others are as squirmy and pervasive as a Ceti eel and can wrap themselves around your cerebral cortex before you’ve had a chance to even identify them. Luckily, even when Easter eggs are coming at warp speed, there is a way to spot them. First, travel back in time and convince yourself to become an obsessive Star Trek fan, next, watch every episode and film of every Star Trek iteration multiple times and then commit it all to memory. Once you’ve done that, travel back to the present, and see if you can spot all the Easter eggs in Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 1, “The Next Generation.”
We think we’ve caught everything in this jam-packed episode. But, be warned, Picard...

Bradley Walsh’s ITV co-star has addressed claims that their show has been cancelled.
Last week, it was claimed that comedy drama series The Larkins, starring Walsh and Joanna Scanlan, would come to an end due to low ratings.
While ITV is yet to officially announce the show’s cancellation, one of its stars shared a message in response to the claims on social media.
“Thanks for watching #thelarkins,” Tony Gardner wrote.
In the series, Gardner, whose other credits include Last Tango in Halifax and My Parents Are Aliens, plays the wealthy Alec Norman.
He continued: “Made lots of memories and new friends. Can’t ask for any more than that.”
The Larkins, which debuted in 2021, is inspired by He Bates’ novel The Darling Buds of May. The book received its own TV adaptation in the 1990s.
A third series of The Larkins has been filmed, and will be broadcast later this year.

Game shows continue their TV domination as the second half of The Chase Season 3 airs on ABC, and it’s thanks in part to Jeopardy! champ and current Chaser Brad Rutter. The knowledgeable competitor continues to display his intellectual prowess in the trivia game which puts three contestants up against a single skilled Chaser. Returning this past January, it’s been a bit of a process getting to this point in the season as Rutter tells TV Insider, “we shot all these [episodes] back in March [2022].” The process brought Rutter and his fellow Chasers into the studio “every day or every other day” over the course of three weeks. Returning alongside fellow Jeopardy! alum James Holzhauer, Rutter helped welcome three new chasers — Victoria Groce, Brandon Blackwell, and Buzzy Cohen — to the fray at the beginning of Season 3. “It’s a well-oiled machine now,” Rutter remarks of the dynamic between him and...

As part of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Onyx Collective unveiled its expanding slate of programming to come in the near future during their Storytellers Showcase – which notably includes two new projects, one from Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, as well as the highly anticipated sophomore documentary feature from music artist and filmmaker Questlove.
The company has acquired an untitled Sly Stone feature documentary from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, marking the artist’s second collaboration with the collective. Variety has learned the doc promises to examine the life and legacy of Sly and the Family Stone, the groundbreaking band led by the famous Sly Stone. Questlove will direct and executive produce, alongside Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman for Two One Five Entertainment Inc.

Sheba, a one-hour-scripted drama series, from Chantelle Wells (Yellowjackets), Azie Tesfai (Supergirl) and Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, is being developed by Onyx Collective for Hulu. The project was announced Saturday during Onyx Collective’s panel at the Sundance Film Festival.
Co-created by Wells and Tesfai, and written by Wells, Sheba explores the rise to power of the first queen on the continent of Africa as she seeks to unite the nation we now know as Ethiopia, making it one of the richest, most formidable kingdoms in the world. Bradley Walsh has denied reports that The Larkins has been cancelled by ITV.
The Chase host stars opposite Joanna Scanlan as Pop Larkin in the channel’s adaptation of H E Bates’ novel The Darling Buds of May.
The series, which follows a family in rural Kent in the 1950s, made its debut in 2021. At the time, it divided critics, with The Independent’s Sean O’Grady calling it “a Brexit television abomination”.
Last week, reports emerged in The Sun claiming that the show was being axed after losing two million viewers between series one and two and alleged “cast disagreements” on set.
However, appearing on This Morning on Tuesday (10 January), Walsh vehemently denied the claims.
Walsh said that he’d “had a few calls” about the rumours which he said were attributed to “some problem with the viewing figures”.
“The viewing figures were absolutely fine, there was nothing wrong with the viewing figures,...

Love Island’s “extraordinary success” drove ITV to commission its Big Brother reboot, according to content boss Kevin Lygo, who said duty of care is being considered for the upcoming reality show but “I don’t think we should stop allowing the public on TV.”
Lygo told the Edinburgh Television Festival that Love Island, which has now run for eight seasons, had “defied current logic” by regularly topping 3M viewers per night across its eight-week run for multiple seasons.
“More young people watch it than any other and we should all take joy in the fact that if you get the right show, they will watch,” he added.
Lygo said Banijay’s Big Brother reboot, which was unveiled during the Love Island finale, will likely skew older than Love Island, attracting audiences who watched two decades ago and “remember it fondly” from days on Channel 4 and Channel 5.
