Now Netflix title “Caliphate,” produced by the Endemol Shine-owned Swedish production company Filmlance, has smashed all-time viewing records on Sweden’s Svt Play, the catch-up VOD service of public broadcaster Svt, Endemol Shine Group confirmed Wednesday.
“Caliphate” was made available globally on Netflix on March 18.
The biggest success ever on Svt Play, Endemol Shine said, “Caliphate” bowed on Svt on Jan. 12 where it is already known to have attracted an average of over 600,000 adult viewers during its first month on Play, a record for the streaming service.
Svt figures at the time, published by the Nordisk Film & TV Fond newsletter, also underscored a clear shift from linear to online in the Swedish public as more episodes of the series were released.
That can be put down to “Caliphate” itself. On one hand, it is an edge-of-the-seat thriller, turning on the excruciating daily danger suffered by a young Swedish mother,...

Here’s some news worth plotzing over: More than two decades after The Nanny ended its run on CBS, the cast has reunited for the greatest production since Yetta’s Letters. (Eat that, Andrew Lloyd Webber).
In an effort to making staying at home infinitely more fabulous, series star Fran Drescher assembled the sitcom’s original stars — including Charles Shaughnessy as Maxwell Sheffield, Daniel Davis as Niles, Lauren Lane as C. C. Babcock, Nicholle Tom as Maggie Sheffield, Benjamin Salisbury as Brighton Sheffield, Madeline Zima as Grace Sheffield and Renee Taylor as Sylvia Fine — for a virtual table read of The Nanny’s 1993 pilot episode,...

The mother studio of franchise pics, Disney, made some release date changes today which further underscores studios’ planning that the summer box office season starts later than sooner. With Artemis Fowl, originally on Memorial Day weekend, heading to Disney+, and Universal’s Candyman now on Sept. 25, Disney/Pixar’s Soul is left standing at the expected first pic of summer.
First off, despite the nonsensical fanboy rumors last weekend that Black Widow and Mulan were headed to Disney+, that’s indeed not the case, and they’re staying put in theaters. Mulan, which is already a locked print having had its world premiere in Hollywood earlier this month, will open on July 24, sending Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s Jungle Cruise, which was on that date to July 30, 2021. Remember, given the halting of feature production in the world out of safety from Covid-19, 2021 is going to need movies.

Microsoft and Sony are due to deliver their next-gen hardware this year in the form of Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, but how much do we really know about either console? Specs aside, remarkably very little.
The former decided to unveil what the Xbox One’s successor would look like during last year’s Game Awards but Sony, secretive as ever, has so far refused to even share that. The expected blowout (likely live-streamed affairs in the face of growing concerns over Covid-19) of new details is expected to arrive sometime in June to coincide with the annual reveal season traditionally kickstarted with E3. Neither party will be present in Los Angeles this time due to the Esa’s decision to cancel this year’s event, though with launch day for both devices penned-in for the holiday season, it’s only a matter of time until the deafening silence comes to an end.

Focus Features has slated a pair of pics for summer release. The Miranda July-directed comedy Kajillionaire will open for business on June 19, and creepshow Come Play attacks theaters July 24.
Kajillionaire stars Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins as con artists who have spent 26 years training their only daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) to swindle, scam and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their next scam — only to have their entire world turned upside down.
The film will open against three other wide releases: Lionsgate thriller Fatale, Disney’s animated Soul and the Untitled Judd Apatow/Pete Davidson Comedy from Universal.
Focus acquired the comedy in February after its Sundance premiere. Plan B Entertainment’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner produced the pic along with Youree Henley. Plan B’s Brad Pitt, Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, and Jillian Longnecker executive produced.

Once again there is a speculator-driven comic coming out this week that forces us to limit sales or change our natural way of doing business.
This week it is Year Of The Villain: Hell Arisen #3.
Here’s the thing: unlike last week’s Batman, where there were a good number of potential people-who-bought-earlier-issues-from-the-rack, my point-of-sale system shows me that virtually none of you bought copies of #1 or #2 from the shelf — this comic was a massive flop. And so, really, the only reason for most of the phone calls and such we’re getting is because we’ve got a bunch of greedy people trying to buy it from us for $4, and flip it for $40+.
I can’t countenance this as a retailer, and so...

There was a time when the Child’s Play films were solid, terrifying slasher flicks. They couldn’t quite equal the might of Halloween, but they achieved a cult-like status that’s still enjoyed to this day. After all, Chucky was a nightmarish villain who probably set doll sales back quite a bit for several years.
Then the franchise abandoned the Child’s Play nomenclature in favor of naming its sequels after the titular character. They also underwent a bit of a thematic shift, turning into horror-comedies rather than straight up horror. Chucky also had a wife and then eventually, a son.
How did two re-animated plastic dolls conceive a child, though? Well, according to ScreenRant, despite it not being biologically possible for them to have a kid, they still have their human souls and as a result, it makes it possible for them to procreate. Sf Studios has acquired the Nordic distribution rights to Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness,” the Swedish filmmaker’s follow up to the Palme d’Or winning “The Swquare.”
A contemporary satire taking place in the world of fashion, “Triangle of Sadness” is set on a luxury yacht and ends up on a deserted island where hierarchies are turned upside down. The film is produced by Erik Hemmendorff at Plattform Produktion.
The movie, which marks Östlund’s English-language debut and his most ambitious feature ever, is approximately budgeted at 10 million euros.
“’Triangle of Sadness’ is an existential candy-bag; reflecting, provocative and entertaining. The bar is as usual set high and we are currently planning the wildest scene ever in the history of film,” said Östlund. “On a luxury yacht, in a storm, passengers are struggling with sea sickness and table etiquette during a captain’s dinner. A really nasty dish will be served.

This week, Moby will release his second memoir, Then It Fell Apart. Out May 7th, the book picks up where 2016’s Porcelain left off, chronicling the heady, hedonistic period after the release of his 1999 breakthrough, Play, which fused electronica with folk, blues and gospel. Play would go on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide and rank at number 341 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, but at the time the album came out, the producer already felt like a “has-been.” In this excerpt from the book,...

On Thursday, in the frozen depths of the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Warren Haynes steadily held up a wall of a home as the support beams were nailed down.
Though an exact number couldn’t be found at the moment, the rock guitarist estimated it was somewhere north of 40 homes he’s been responsible for building from funds gathered through his annual Christmas Jam. A fundraiser for the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, the bash has raised more than $2.3 million.

In his ambitious two-part documentary, Play, Dave Grohl overdubs multiple instruments into a 23-minute, instrumental prog-rock odyssey.
The project opens with the Foo Fighters leader reflecting on the sheer childlike joy of picking up an instrument. “To any musician, young or old, a beautiful studio full of instruments like a playground,” he says. “To me, I’m like a kid in a candy store. Most musicians are always chasing the next challenge; you never feel satisfied, and you never feel like you’ve completely mastered the instrument you’re playing.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is continuing to explore the world of documentaries, announcing today a two-part mini doc titled “Play” which he directed. Ever the overachiever, Grohl also plays seven different instruments during the film and on a resulting 23-minute recording. In revealing the project, Grohl released a sketch of his set up (see it below).
“Play,” arriving on Aug. 10, is described as “celebrating the rewards and challenges of dedicating ones life to playing and mastering a musical instrument.” Grohl has long advocated for music education and the importance of learning to play an instrument. Part one is mostly narrated and offers a look at the music-making process.
Grohl worked with Mark Monroe on the mini-doc, with whom he collaborated on the HBO series “Sound City” and film “Sonic Highways,” as well as Brandon Trost (“The Disaster Artist,” “This is The End”). “Play” is accompanied by an online interactive...

Google chief Sundar Pichai issued a thinly veiled warning Wednesday that the European Commission’s finding of anti-competitive practices by the Internet giant with regard to Android could spell the end of the operating system’s free distribution.
The European Commission announced a record-breaking $5 billion fine against Google, saying the company violated EU laws by requiring smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and its Chrome browser, limiting rival search engines. Google also “made payments to certain large manufacturers and mobile network operators on condition that they exclusively pre-installed the Google Search app on their devices,” the commission stated.
Google said it would appeal the decision.
In a blog post after the EU’s announcement, Pichai said that free distribution of the Android platform and Google’s suite of applications benefits not only manufacturers and operators but also app developers and consumers. He hinted that the commission’s ruling...

Decorated homicide detective Ray Archer (Al Pacino) partners with criminal profiler Will Ruiney (Karl Urban) to catch one of the city’s notoriously vicious serial killers, who is playing a twisted version of murder inspired by the children’s game Hangman. Every 24 hours, a body is hung revealing the next letter carved into the victim’s body. As crime journalist Christi Davies (Brittany Snow) reports on the crime spree, the trio must race against the clock to prevent further murders. Archer and Ruiney become more entangled in the ruthless game than they could ever have imagined, but they must keep playing to save lives and attempt to catch the Hangman.
From the get-go Hangman seems like a film out of time.

Art about art is often tricky to engage with, much less write about. Part of it is an awareness that arises at each moment, which then gets reflected in an endless hall of mirrors. There's a multivalence that can either be invigorating or tiresome, the boundaries of intention and response endlessly intertwined. That certainly describes Ruben Östlund’s The Square, which from its title alone suggests an empty space to be filled in with whatever the viewer desires. The title actually refers to a piece of art, commissioned by the film's main subject, Christian (Claes Bang), the chief curator of Sweden's X-Royal Museum. It's a literal 4x4 square that per the artist's manifesto is: “a sanctuary of trust and caring. Within it, we all share equal rights and obligations.” For a while, however, it's unclear precisely how the Golden Rule-esque sentiment will factor into what starts to look like an acerbic character study of Christian,...

Dear Fern,It truly is wonderful to resume this festival correspondence with you. My last trip resulted in a monologue, and I'm very glad to have you here with me to tell of impressions and experiences both shared and divergent. You ask how I'm able to write on all these films across all these festivals (and surely so many others write so much better on so much more), but really it is your words I'm most eager to encounter, as you are not in the film festival "scene": your lovely erudition and insight comes from within, from love, knowledge and talent, rather than an attachment to the centripetal force of festival trends. While my travels to Berlin, Cannes and Locarno this year may have allowed me cross some heavy-hitting big names or otherwise greatly anticipated films off my list (Toronto is playing The Assassin, Arabian Nights, In the Shadow of Women,...

Although he made the Foreign Language Academy Award shortlist, in a shocking turn of events earlier this month, Ruben Ostlund failed to score a nomination with the lauded Force Majeure. At home, however, he earned a record six Guldbagge Awards last night. At Sweden’s equivalent to the Oscars, Ostlund’s existential comedy/drama scooped prizes for Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography (Fredrik Wenzel), Supporting Actor (Kristofer Hivju), and Editing (with Jacob Secher Schulsinger). He had previously won one Guldbagge, for directing Play in 2012.
Before the Oscar shortlist was revealed in December, Ostlund told me he was relieved that Roy Andersson’s Venice Golden Lion winner A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence had not been eligible for submission to AMPAS as Sweden’s Oscar pick. “He is my idol.
