Taking on the role of a younger Furiosa was no small feat for Anya Taylor-Joy. The decision to avoid contacting Charlize Theron, who originally brought the character to life in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, was intentional. In her words, Taylor-Joy shared, Why didn’t I call Charlize? I went to the source, which is George , and was like, ‘What do you need me to be?’ The film, Furiosa, is a visually stunning and action-packed prequel set many years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by George Miller, this latest iteration dives deep into the backstory of

Yes, there were more flame-throwers, but working on Furiosa was pretty similar to starring in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, says the actor. So how does he duck the crossfire that comes with playing Jk Rowling’s Strike?
When Tom Burke was cast in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to the crash-bang spectacular Mad Max: Fury Road, he sat his 77-year-old mother down in front of the television and showed her the previous film in that post-apocalyptic series, just to give her some idea of what he was letting himself in for. Afterwards, she looked concerned. “Will you be mainly inside or outside?” she asked.

Almost nine years to the day since Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in Cannes, George Miller returns to the Croisette with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It’s a deafening roar of a film, full of the same improbable vehicles and breathless pursuits through the director’s signature dystopian outback, though now told through a lens that can feel a bit slick at times. It tells the story of how Imperator Furiosa (immortalized by Charlize Theron in 2015 and gamely reinterpreted here by Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy) came to be, tracking her journey from childhood and the Place of Abundance––an Edenic oasis of renewable energy and worrying red apples––to hardened warrior in the wastelands of Bullet Farm, Gastown, and The Citadel of Immortan Joe. The concerns that met the trailer––suggesting Miller had traded in his predecessor’s practical effects for CGI––are, I’m sorry to say,...

2024 has been a great year for movies so far, and it only seems to be getting better. From A24 making history with the Civil War to Wes Ball succeeding in crafting a worthy continuation to the Planet of the Apes trilogy, now it seems, George Miller is too joining in on the fun.
Notable for making one of the greatest action films of all time, his upcoming addition to the Mad Max franchise is set to debut next week. Although Miller set the bar extremely high with Fury Road, following Furiosa‘s score on the Tomatometer, things are looking promising for the prequel.

A fascinating blend of film mastery and personal devotion emerged recently when famed game designer Hideo Kojima shared his thoughts on George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Kojima, revered for his groundbreaking work in the video game industry, did not hold back his admiration, declaring, George Miller’s Mad Max movies, especially the first two, were the first time when I saw action scenes in cinema. This profound respect for Miller’s craft comes ahead of Furiosa, a much-anticipated prequel to the wildly successful Mad Max: Fury Road. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the titular role, initially portrayed by Charlize Theron, with

When walking into a film like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the problem with prequel stories cannot help but linger in the back of one’s mind: Can there be excitement in telling us a story we already know? Indiana Jones can’t die in Temple of Doom and Anakin Skywalker will grow up to become Darth Vader. It’s inevitable. Some prequels manage to navigate that hurdle by completely subverting our expectations (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me), largely functioning as standalone experiences (X-Men: First Class), or by simply parodying their very concepts (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp). No matter the solution, what we know remains a constant issue that needs to be accounted for.
In recent years, more prequel stories have strangely embraced that issue. Many modern movie prequels get made because we know almost everything about those stories, those characters, and that world. That...

George Miller gets biblical in the opening moments of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in his postapocalyptic action franchise. The young Furiosa, played by Alyla Browne, picks a ripe piece of fruit from a tree growing at the edge of a verdant forest. “We’ve come too far,” says her companion, emphasizing the forbidden nature of the act with the perfect amount of allegorical on-the-noseness. What happens next certainly has the aura of divine punishment, as Furiosa is whisked away from her home (“the Green Place” first mentioned in Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road) by a masked group of motor bikers.
She’s no helpless waif, mind you, and with her steadfast mother, Mary Jo Bassa (Charlee Fraser), in hot pursuit, Furiosa gives as good as any of the lecherous brutes tormenting her. But the fates, not to mention the narrative dictates of an origin story with an already fixed outcome,...

The max in “Mad Max” stands for maximizing profit potential?
George Miller, the maverick 79-year-old Australian director, brought the fifth entry into his dystopian action franchise, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” to the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival this week.

George Miller contemplated using de-aging technology so that Charlize Theron could feature in 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'.The 79-year-old filmmaker has helmed the new 'Mad Max' prequel and explained that he opted to cast Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of the title character after being left unconvinced by the use of the tech in films such as Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman' and Ang Lee's 'Gemini Man'.George told Variety: "Both of them were masterful directors, but it was never persuasive."I thought all people would be watching is Charlize looking young and knowing it's an effect."The director has always been interested in the use of technology in cinema – as shown in films such as 'Babe' and 'Happy Feet' – but conceded that it would have been "difficult" to implement it in his latest blockbuster.Miller said: "I mean basically,...

Why Do the Warboys Spray Their Mouths in Mad Max: Fury Road? - Main Image
With Furiosa coming to theaters soon, it’s a great time to look back at the previous Mad Max film, especially as there are still many mysteries about that film’s characters and world. One such mystery is why the warboys spray their mouths during the various Mad Max: Fury Road chase sequences.
As Fury Road is not an exposition-heavy movie, a lot of its world-building is done visually, meaning the chrome-spraying of the warboys isn’t exactly explained.
Based on what we can glean from the film though, the color of the spray may hold the key to understanding this ritual.
Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for Mad Max: Fury Road, so proceed with caution.

The dust was just beginning to settle and the smell of guzzolene was still in the air after Wednesday night’s high-octane Cannes premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. But after more than a decade of development and a grueling shoot, the work was not done for filmmaker George Miller and stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, who faced the international press during a lively conference to discuss the long journey to their Fury Road prequel.
Australian filmmaker Miller has now made five Mad Max films over 45 years, but none have been as anticipated as Furiosa. That’s thanks to the pedigree of Fury Road, Miller’s 2015 film that introduced the world to Imperator Furiosa, played in that feature by Charlize Theron. It is considered one of the greatest action movies of all time and became a surprise awards season juggernaut that won six Oscars.

“There’s certainly more stories there,” George Miller said Thursday, answering a question about whether there are more Mad Max movies on the horizon.
The question came during the afternoon Cannes Film Festival press conference for Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which had its world premiere screening the night before.
“Maybe because in order to tell the story of Fury Road, we needed to know about Furiosa and Max in the years before,” said the Oscar-winning filmmaker.

The prestigious Cannes Film Festival witnesses several features each year, but only a handful of them manage to create an impression and earn a standing ovation worthwhile of talking. While the debate about whether the length of standing ovations at the festival is directly proportionate to its quality or not is an ongoing debate, the length is nonetheless a part of popular tradition and to some degree provides a measurement of the film’s future success.

Furiosa, the prequel to the Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, recently received an incredible almost 8-minute long-standing ovation. But it might feel nothing when compared to Guillermo Del Toro’s 2006 epic, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But eight years have passed, and while Furiosa drawing raves following the Cannes premiere,...

It has to be said that nobody does it better in terms of helter-skelter high octane action than director George Miller who gave us the first in the Mad Max franchise some 45 years ago.
There’s something refreshing about someone who knows his universe and just gets on with, creating new legends and character back stories in the process.
It all has some topical bearing but don’t let that stop you from fastening your seat belts for the ride across unforgiving desert landscapes and craggy canyons as those humans left to fend for themselves in a world of climate change and pandemics.
Survival of the fittest is the key with a few warlords overseeing the arid landscapes. This time around pride of place is given to the young Furiosa (played with gutsy aplomb by Anya Taylor-Joy taking over from Charlize Theron from Mad Max: Fury Road, and in an even younger incarnation.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had its splashy world premiere at Cannes earlier today and, as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the first reviews are now in for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel.
The movie received a 7-minute standing ovation in France and, as we write this, it sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. While not a perfect score, the consensus is clearly incredibly positive overall, with the action, visuals, and cast - led by Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth - all receiving praise.
In fact, it appears Furiosa only falls short in the eyes of some because it didn't live up to their lofty expectations.
Overall, it's looking like Miller has another winner on his hands, and providing those all-important box office numbers are good, then we're sure the filmmaker's plans for yet another Mad Max prequel (focusing on the title character) will come to fruition.

Furiosa: A Max Max Saga had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, nearly a decade after the debut of Mad Max: Fury Road at the same festival. The first reviews for Furiosa have begun pouring in, and while they’re just as full of praise as those first reactions, it doesn’t sound like it reaches the heights of Fury Road.
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman said that while Furiosa contains “a handful of awesome action moments,” the action doesn’t take center stage in the same way it did in Fury Road. “The most important thing to say about ‘Furiosa,’ however, is that what it all adds up to is a movie that can be darkly bedazzling, and that will be embraced and defended in a dozen passionate ways — but it’s one that, to me, falls very short of being a ‘Mad Max’ home run,” Gleiberman wrote.

The cast and creatives behind Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hit the red carpet for its Cannes Film Festival debut on Wednesday.

Said Miller following the screening of the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow prequel to 2015’s Fury Road (which likewise world premiered in Cannes), “Thank you. We worked very hard on this film and it is very interesting to see what you make of it.”

Woman Thou Art Loosed: Miller Wades into the Wasteland
In all likelihood, George Miller presumably will be closing out his filmography the same way it began, fleshing out the iconic dystopian desert world he created back in 1979 with Mad Max and its original successive sequels. As fate would have it, a powerful figure rising out of his celebrated 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, would get her own origin story in this universe, which arrives with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Strangely, much like Charlize Theron pulled focus over the titular Tom Hardy in the earlier film, Anya Taylor-Joy is the muted center of her own universe in this installment, thanks in part to a more vivacious, arguably more dynamic role for a new character portrayed by Chris Hemsworth.…...

When George Miller released "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015 (our review here), he completely revolutionized action films forever. The long-awaited fourth installment of his post-apocalyptic Ozploitation franchise, "Fury Road" was over three decades in the making, but before Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron ever pressed their boot leather to the gas pedal of a war rig — there was Miller's script for "Furiosa." Almost entirely written before production began on "Fury Road," Miller outlined a thrilling epic about the life of Imperator Furiosa before she crossed paths with "Mad" Max Rockatansky.
Now, Miller has brought that story to the big screen, a prequel to "Fury Road" and an immersive dive into the life story of one of cinema's greatest characters of the last 20 years. Thanks to the extensive behind-the-scenes oral history of "Fury Road," we know that Miller is a meticulous director who storyboards out his films within an inch of their life.

The first thing to say about “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is that it’s not like any other “Mad Max” film. The movie, which runs 2 hours and 28 minutes, is teemingly, sprawlingly, phantasmagorically ambitious. Where “Mad Max: Fury Road” was set over three days, “Furiosa” takes place over 15 years and tells the origin story of Imperator Furiosa in five chapters (which come with titles like “The Pole of Inaccessibility”). The film has a cast of thousands of depraved hooligan bikers with rusty weapons and rotten teeth. At times, it feels like they’re getting ready to gather for Wasteland Woodstock.
The second thing to say about “Furiosa” is that though it contains a handful of awesome action moments, the action doesn’t dominate the way it did in previous “Mad Max” films. The director, George Miller, seems more invested this time in his world-building than he is in his road-warrior-ing.

Cannes – At the very least, and no matter what your personal opinion of the end result, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a reminder. A reminder to never, never, ever doubt the brilliance of George Miller’s cinematic eye. Almost 50 years since his feature film debut, the celebrated filmmaker continues to fashion images that find a way to burn themselves in your brain time and time again. It’s no surprise then, that Miller’s visual touch helps elevate his latest endeavor into more than just a prequel to 2015’s landmark achievement, “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Since their beginnings in 1979, George Miller’s hyper-jacked Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson had not received a single Oscar nomination, not even for Tina Turner’s great signature song “We Don’t Need Another Hero” in 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome. But then, 30 years later, when finally the fourth and Gibson-less edition appeared, the snooty Academy got on board and gave the newly regenerated Mad Max: Fury Road 10 nominations including for Best Picture and Director. It won six of them, virtually sweeping the crafts categories.
Nine years later comes a prequel, Furosia: A Mad Max Saga, and Miller, now seemingly ageless at 79 (he was 34 when the first one came out) has perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic that delivers the origin story of the title character Charlize Theron picked up in Fury Road when she was about 26.
That movie only covered about three days total.

Anya Taylor-Joy may play a vengeful warrior in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” but the actress also had to battle her way a bit creatively while on set for the sprawling epic.
Taylor-Joy told The New York Times that she had to fight to have her title character unleash a scream in the feature, helmed by George Miller.
“We’re animals, and there’s a point where somebody just snaps,” Taylor-Joy said. “There’s one scream in that movie, and I am not joking when I tell you that I fought for that scream for three months. I am a really strong advocate of female rage.”
Taylor-Joy explained how the character of Furiosa felt “real” to her, and almost like a friend she needed to protect. “I defend, to a fault, their interest,” she said of all of her roles, especially in the “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will have some good commercial news at its back as it roars into its much-anticipated Cannes Film Festival premiere Wednesday night.
The Warner Bros. action tentpole has received censorship approval from Beijing regulators to get released in China, a source with knowledge of the decision tells The Hollywood Reporter. It will be the first film in the 45-year-old Mad Max movie franchise to open theatrically in the country, which is home to the world’s second-largest box office. Warner Bros. has applied for a June 7 release date for Furiosa, but the studio is still waiting for the final dating decision from China’s film regulators, according to THR‘s source.
Since the pandemic, Hollywood hits have been earning far less in China than they once did, as the country’s moviegoing youth have undergone a generational shift in taste towards domestic fare.
