The Present
Barry and Caitlin walk to get coffee, and he tells her that it's nice to slow down every once in a while. Caitlin explains that Frost is off on vacation. In Jitters, Caitlin tells Barry that she's thinks she's ready to start dating again. Barry gets an alert on his phone that two bullet trains about to collide, and he speeds off as Flash to get everyone on the trains to safety.
At Jitters, Caitlin watches a newscast about the rescue and everyone applauds. Barry speeds back in and sits down where he was, and Caitlin figures that Barry has leveled up speed-wise. He advises Caitlin to give Frost time to "level up" romantically.
Iris interviews Kris Kramer and asks about the captain disbanding the meta task force. Kramer says that she's come to terms with being a meta, and she realized everyone should be treated the same under the law. As Iris ends the interview, Allegra comes in at Iris invitation. Once Kramer leaves, Allegra comments on how far Iris' 'Citizentopia' podcast come. Iris tells Allegra that she is promoting Allegra the supervising editor. Allegra points out that some of the employees have more experience than her, and Iris assures Allegra that she's got it and that she believes in her.
That night, Barry and Iris have a candlelit pizza dinner and Barry notes that Deon is stabilizing Iris's temporal sickness with regular treatments. The couple discuss having a baby then kiss, and are interrupted when there's a knock at the door. They answer it and find Barry there, and he says that he's attending CCTC and his hotel was overbooked, so he's taking them up on their invitation to stay there any time. Ray heads for the pizza, and says that Nora is out saving kids. The couple assures him that he's not interrupting, and Barry directs him to the guest room.
At Mercury Labs, guards are preparing to transport a power core in a glass case, when four figures walk toward them, dressed as playing cards. Queen predicts their actions and Jack uses eyebeams to heat the guards' batons, and Ten charges forward and takes out the two now-disarmed guards. King takes out the two remaining guards, then embraces Queen. He gives a baton to Queen, who breaks the case holding the core, takes it out, and shows it to the others, and says that now they raise the stakes.
The next day at the loft, Ray is making smoothies for Barry and Iris, and talks about the Legends and Nora. Chester arrives, and the couple introduces Chester to Ray. They talk about the Con that Ray is going to be the legacy honoree, and Chester says that he's signed up as a volunteer and going to be Ray's liaison. Ray quickly excuses himself, leaving Iris stuck with Ray and Chester. She says that she has to go to work as well, and will meet with Ray for his interview at 4 that afternoon.
Barry examines the scene of the robbery, and Kramer comes over. He tells her about the meta-human robbers, who call themselves the Royal Flush Gang. They were Central City's first meta threat, and he was in a coma when they struck and were captured. Kramer stares intently at the crime scene, and Barry asks if she's okay. She says that she is, and it's the kind of case the meta task force would have been assigned to. Barry asks how Kramer's mimic powers work, and she says that they only activate in times of stress. Kramer asks if her being a meta makes it hard for Barry to work for her, and he assures her that he doesn't.
Allegra is having her first staff meeting, and wants to cover the theft. The three more experienced staffers say that is isn't important enough, and they start discussing their own stories. Allegra tells one of the staffers, Vanya, to run with the tech heist. Vanya says that she's going to focus on the railway collision, says that's what Iris would want, and walks away. The other two leave, leaving Allegra alone.
At the police station in his lab, Barry tells Cecile that he found char marks on one guard's weapon just like those at the collision site. Barry confirms that they were caused by laser beams delivered with pinpoint precision. Cecile wonders why the Gang would cause a collision when they haven't stolen anything. Barry explains that the core is a bleeding-edge beryllium core that is an unstable power source. He has confirmed that the case wasn't in the transport case, and the Gang is now becoming tech thieves.
Korber and a squad of SAT officers go back. She tells Barry that power at Iron Heights went out for three seconds, and now a thousand inmates are on the loose. Barry becomes the Flash and returns all of the inmates back to their cells at superspeed, then discovers that the Gang took out the generator to cause the breakout.
Chester and Ray go to Jitters, taking a coffee stop from Ray's schedule. Chester introduces Ray to the tech entrepreneurs, ready to pitch their ideas in thirty seconds or less. Ry is a little leery of the whole thing, and Chester says that he figured Ray has been out of the game for a while so he set the whole thing up. Despite that, Ray says that he doesn't want to start another tech company, and just wants to pursue a balanced life. Ray explains that his priorities are his wife and working in his own lab. Chester apologizes and tells the entrepreneurs that the pitch sessions are officially cancelled. They leave, disappointed, and Chester tells Ray that he'll leave him to his privacy.
At the Tech Con, Iris is in attendance. Allegra comes up to her and says that she blew it at the office. When she says that the staff barely listened to her, Iris isn't surprised and tells Allegra that dealing with it is part of her new position. Allegra wonders how Iris knows, and Iris tells her that she's exactly what CCC media need and knows the city. Iris wants Allegra for her viewpoint. Allegra says that she knew she could handle her "upgrade" in power level, and Iris says that she should do the same at the office.
At STAR Labs, Barry tells Caitlin and Candice that the Gang abducted a prisoner named Jared Haywood. Caitlin hasn't been able to track down the Gang yet. Chester comes in and says that the chip has hundreds of uses. When Candice and Iris ask him why he's sad, Chester tells everyone that he messed up being Ray's liaison. Candice tells him to go easier on him, and talks about gambling cryptocurrency with his grandmother at a casino.
Barry has an idea and has Chester determine if any of the casinos take cryptocurrency. He discovers that they all do, and they have over 50 million. The Gang would need a computer with a next-level microchip, a power source powerful enough to charge it, and an expert hacker... like Heywood. Chester says that when the Gang hacks the casinos, he can track them and then Flash can move in.
At the Gang's base, Heywood transfers the funds. Ten grabs Heywood and prepares to kill him so they have less people to share the money. Flash runs in, grabs Heywood, takes him back to Iron Heights, and tells the Gang that it's all over. Ten invites Flash to attack them, pointing out that Queen can predict his every move.
The Gang team attack, and Flash moves past them at superspeed, and redirects Ten to punch Ten and Jack to laser-blast Ten. The hero punches Jack and then puts power-dampening cuffs on all of them. Queen wonders how Flash could out-maneuver them when she could read his mind, and Flash tells her that he changed his thoughts at super-speed.
Later at the Con, Chester is using a selfie-stick to livestream apologize to his streaming fans. Barry arrives and Chester interviews him, and they call over Ray. Chester quickly leaves to avoid Ray, and Ray tells Barry what happened earlier. Ray says that he's grown a lot in the last few months, and doesn't want to start a big tech company and falls into his old patterns.
Barry says that he's grown as well, partially by helping Team Flash to grow. Ray admits that he misses scientific collaboration, and Barry tells him that if he wants something that doesn't exist, Ray should invent it.
Allegra hands out feedback to the three staffers. She says that their stories aren't bad, but CCC Media is the voice of the people and it has to have something to say. When Vanya says that it's the opposite of objective journalism, Allegra tells her and the others that everyone's voice should be heard, high-placed or not. Allegra tells them to try again and remember who they're walking for, and they walk off.
At the Con, Iris interviews Ray and asks what's next for him. Ray looks at Chester and says that he hasn't been doing a lot of research but doesn't want to repeat his previous achievements. He says that they should find out together next year, and everyone applauds. As Iris ends the interview, Despero appears on the stage with Iris and Ray. He tells them that they should all run, and telepathically reinforces his order.
As the con-goers run in terror, Despero tells Flash to show himself. Flash speeds in and tells Despero to tell him what he wants. Despero says that he came there to find Flash, and Flash used to be good once. Now that he has found Flash, he's going to kill him. Ray, Chester, and Iris run up, and Despero uses his belt device to turn himself into a giant. Chester picks up an energy scanner from nearby, and Ray figures Flash needs some help.
Flash circles around Despero, creating a vacuum, and Ray tells Chester that an old friend and a new one changed his mind. Despero punches the floor, sending out a shockwave that knocks Chester and Iris off their feet and sends Flash flying out of the building. The giant intruder jumps outside and tells Flash that he was born in space so a vacuum has no effect on him. Atom arrives, and the two of them blast Despero but their bolts go right through him.
Iris wonders who they're firing at, and Chester tells the heroes that Despero is behind them. Despero through a taxi at them, and Atom shrinks Flash and they avoid it. Flash figures Despero is telepathically messing with their minds, and Despero tells Atom that it isn't his fight and should leave. Flash moves in at Despero at superspeed, creating a speed mirage of himself, while Atom shrinks and searches for Despero's weakness.
Despero telepathically senses which Flash is the real one and punches him. When he moves in on Flash, Flash asks Despero what he meant earlier about "being good once". Despero telepathically projects an image of Flash, and says that Flash created Armageddon in 10 years. The alien is there to kill Flash and save the world.
As Despero prepares to strike, the miniaturized Atom shorts out Despero's belt device. As he grows to normal size, Despero disappears as his device runs out of control.
Later at STAR Labs, the group meets and Ray tells Barry that he's not destined to destroy the world. Barry isn't so sure, and Caitlin reports that she's tested Barry and he's completely fine, physically and mentally. Candice has telepathically scanned the residue Despero left in Barry's mind, and she says that Despero was telling the truth. Barry figures that everyone is in danger, and figures that Despero will come after them once he comes back from whatever Ray did.
Ray says that he could barely recognize the tech in Despero's belt, so send him to a random location. He suggests that they figure out what kind of alien Despero is, so they have an idea of what weaknesses he has. Caitlin goes to call Alex Danvers, while Barry figures they need to be ready for the fight of their lives.
That night at the CCC Media office, Allegra tells Iris that her account of the battle earlier is amazing. She says that people need to read the article, and Iris tells her that she read the stories that the three staffers, and they're going to print with all of them. Iris congratulates Allegra on inspiring them, and welcomes Allegra to management when Allegra says that they're still not happy with her.
At STAR Labs, Ray offers to stick around but Barry assures him Team Flash can handle him. Ray then tells Chester that thanks to him, he's realized that there is a middle ground to balance. He want to create a non-profit foundation for the entrepreneurs, and he'll name it after Chester's father Quincy. Chester hugs Ray, and as Ray goes he tells Barry to prove he won't destroy the world by showing Despero who he really is... just like Barry does with his team, every day.
Later, Chester detects an alien signal coming in. The alien appears behind a waiting Flash, who tells Despero that he's not going to fight him. Despero is disappointed, and reverts to his normal size and says that in another time and another world, they could have fought as allies. He says that he's seen Flash's future, and he's the most dangerous killer because he hides in the body of a hero. Flash says that he's not a killer, and he can prove it if Despero will let him. He invites Despero to scan his mind, and the alien does so. Despero telepathically sees truth and honor in Flash's mind.
Despero apologizes and says that there are too many lives at stakes for him not to kill Flash. Flash says that he's spent his entire life protecting the world, and all he's asking for is a chance to prove he'd never turn his back on it. Despero wonders why he should believe Flash, and Barry removes his mask and says that he has nothing to hide. Impressed, Despero tells Barry that his boldness has earned him a stay of execution. He gives Barry seven days to prove he won't become the monster he's always witnessed in the future. If Barry doesn't convince him in that time, Despero will end his existence.
