Veteran producer Simon Kinberg, who oversaw most of the “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox, is in talks to produce an upcoming “Star Trek” movie for Paramount Pictures, Variety has confirmed.
The project has already been in development at the studio for some time, with Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) handing the screenplay and Toby Haynes on board to direct. Insiders say the film is intended as an origin story for the main timeline of the “Star Trek” franchise, set in the aftermath of humanity’s first contact with aliens.
Kinberg started his career as a screenwriter, penning 2005’s “XXX: State of the Union” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” before joining the “X-Men” franchise as a co-screenwriter of 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” He transitioned to producing every subsequent “X-Men” film, and he made his directorial debut with the final movie in the franchise, 2019’s “Dark Phoenix.” He...

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. Jarvis and his seemingly more secure lead male costar, Hiroyuki Sanada, displaced both Tom Hiddleston (“Loki...

Exclusive: Michaela Coel is no longer developing a series with links to her smash BBC/HBO hit I May Destroy You.
Three years ago, then-BBC drama director Piers Wenger revealed that Coel was working on a show that had links to the I May Destroy You universe. “It’s at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You know that there is a new show coming along,” Wenger said at the time.
But speaking to Deadline last week, I May Destroy You EP Phil Clarke said Coel had toyed with various ideas for what was loosely termed “I May Destroy You 2,” before deciding against going further. Coel has previously ruled out a second series of I May Destroy You in the traditional sense.
“When Piers went public, we were all talking about it,” said Clarke. “Those were Michaela’s thoughts as well.

There are dream jobs, and then there are dream jobs. Acting seems like one of the more potentially fun dreams, especially when someone gets cast in a major franchise. Who among us hasn't imagined getting to be a part of "Star Wars," "Star Trek," the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or whatever movie or television series makes our hearts beat faster? Talk about living the dream. Heck, sometimes those dreams can even be shared, with friends or family members getting to live vicariously through the actor. In the case of actor Maya Erskine, who recently starred as one half of the spy duo "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on Prime, one particularly intense "Star Wars" fan in her family even (jokingly) threatened to disown her if she didn't take a role on the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

Se7en never fails to find itself as one of the greatest thrillers ever made. The David Fincher movie starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman in the lead focuses on two cops trying to stop a serial killer, executing murders across the city according to the Biblical Seven Deadly Sins.
Brad Pitt as David Mills in 1995’s Se7en | New Line Cinema
From the plot to the performances and technical aspects, several aspects helped the film to be critically and commercially successful. However, one of the primary highlights of the film was its ending. Se7en‘s harrowing conclusion is still discussed heavily among pop culture enthusiasts.
Interestingly, Brad Pitt played a vital role in framing Se7en‘s ending. The Fight Club star ensured two non-negotiable conditions in his contract that did not let the makers change the ending midway.
How did Brad Pitt formulate the perfect ending for Se7en?...

In a major shockeroo announcement, Gold Derby can reveal that FX is shifting the popular “Shōgun” away from the limited series races for the 2024 Emmys and will compete in all the drama categories instead. That rumor has been circulating throughout Hollywood for almost two weeks, but it is now official according to FX. How will this affect the dramatic races for series, acting, directing, writing and crafts?
Since debuting in February, the FX program has been enjoying critical raves and impressive ratings. It’s an adaptation of James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel, following an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) who ends up shipwrecked in Japan. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uncovers secrets that could benefit him in the political wars to come as he tries to rule one of the five Regents in Japan. What would benefit from a “Shōgun”-less limited field? And what would be hurt by a “Shōgun”-filled drama field? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the FX series’ possible category shift, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s” return without the Mr. and Mrs. Smith we know (probably) and more.
Speculation has crescendoed in the past week about “Shōgun” moving from limited to drama, capped off by the report that Hiroyuki Sanada has inked a new deal to reprise his role as Toranaga in a possible second season. FX has not confirmed or denied, but the pieces are coming together for a renewal. [Editor’s note: Since this episode was recorded, “Shōgun” is back on the limited page on the Disney FYC site as of publication time.] If it does go drama, the show would easily become the Best Drama Series favorite, which means we could have a second year in a...

X-Men 97 Nominated at the Gotham TV Awards, Predicted to Win Emmys - Main Image
The dust has barely settled since the season finale of X-Men ‘97 dropped, yet the accolades have already started to pour in.
The highly-acclaimed animated series is nominated in the Breakthrough Drama Series category at the 2024 Gotham TV Awards, with credit to Beau DeMayo as creator and Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, and DeMayo as executive producers.
It is up against some serious competition in the category, versus Black Cake, Fallout, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and The Curse; however, it is worth noting that X-Men ‘97 is the only animated show to get a nomination in this year’s awards.
Nominees for the annual Gotham Awards are selected by a panel of film and television critics, journalists, and festival programmers, with the award ceremony to be held on June 4, 2024.

Back in 2005, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith made a revolution in action movies, as it perfectly balanced between romantic plotline, fighting sequences and high-class comedy. And we’re not talking about its pop-cultural influence, as it established Pitt and Jolie's personal relationship that became a source of juicy gossip.
Surprisingly, 11 years before that, there was a movie, quite similar to it by its plot and style, but it’s obviously lesser known than Mr. & Mrs. Smith. However, some cinephiles claim it’s even better than the 2005 flick and that’s why it deserves more attention.
Its plot revolves around Harry Tasker, a U.S. government agent, who needs to pretend to be a salesman to protect his family. While his true occupation is forcing him to go through new dangerous challenges, his personal life prepares him for a struggle too.

Very rarely in the history of film and television has there ever been a project so unbelievably good that critics and audiences feared the studio rebooting, renewing, or green-lighting a sequel out of it. Mr. & Mrs. Smith used to be one of those films that struck fear in the fansʼ hearts when Amazon commissioned a series adaptation from the iconic Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt movie.

Amazon Prime Video made its first upfront presentation to advertisers on Tuesday in New York, with the streamer bringing out some of its biggest stars to break some news while touting its original series, film and sports offerings.
Amazon took over Pier 36 in Manhattan, which included a large installation dedicated to Amazon shows like “Fallout” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty” as well as movies like “Road House” and their various sports offerings like “Thursday Night Football.”
Amazon’s first major upfront started half an hour late — the long line to get in was referenced several times by Amazon MGM Studios head Jen Salke and even “You’re Cordially Invited” stars Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell. But once inside, advertisers were presented a star-studded litany of projects and news designed to make a huge splash in the marketplace.

Amazon’s adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith put a twist on the original Doug Liman film and the show, which premiered earlier this year, would become one of Prime Video’s top five new series debuts ever in terms of total U.S. viewers. The series would get the greenlight for a second season at Prime Video; however, Variety is reporting that the first season’s stars, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, are not expected to return. Amazon would decline to comment on the matter and reps for both actors have not immediately responded to the news.
Despite the news of the two leads sitting out the next season, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, has still shown her enthusiasm for the future of the series, “We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works...

After very positive reviews and a growing fanbase, Amazon’s reimagining Mr. & Mrs. Smith has officially been renewed for a second season at the streaming service, which is definitely great news. The first season ended on February 2, 2024, so this renewal is quite quick, as it came after just three and a half months (more or less). The series has been described as a reimaging of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but with a different take on the story and the whole concept. The first season starred Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the titular married couple who lead very different lives in reality.

If so, the series could become an anthology and follow a new spy couple in Season 2. (TVLine has reached out to Prime Video for comment.)

However, sources say that Season 1 stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are not expected to return to star in Season 2. Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. Spanning three decades of his career, John Leguizamo has been part of several hit movies. From playing Sid in the Ice Age franchise to appearing in the classic musical Moulin Rouge!, Leguizamo has built an envious resume for himself. However, despite his decorated career, the actor admitted to making “stupid” judgment calls in the past on movies, which later made him regret.

Speaking with Business Insider, John Leguizamo thus shared some of the roles he regrets turning down that went on to become big hits, like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Initially beginning with Stanley Tucci’s role in The Devil Wears Prada, which was originally offered to him, Leguizamo recalled turning down Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s movie over racist claims that later turned out to be untrue.

Donald Glover is busy, apparently so busy as per fans that the Community movie, based on the hit NBC drama of the same name, keeps getting delayed due to his busy schedule. Starring as Troy Barnes in the hit TV series, the actor is one of the several lead characters of the show based on the lives of Community college attendees in the fictional town of Greendale.

First announced in 2022 by Peacock, the movie is yet to start filming. And several fans believe it is because of Glover and his busy schedule that is allegedly causing repeated delays. Even after the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star revealed it is not his fault that the movie hasn’t begun filming, fans refuse to believe him.

Donald Glover has been booked and busy, but those rumors about his schedule holding up production on Peacock’s Community: The Movie aren’t accurate, according to the multihyphenate.
“It’s happening but I don’t know when. I swear, it’s happening,” Glover told Deadline earlier this week at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience in support of his Prime Video series Mr. and Mrs Smith. The video can be watched above.
When asked if it was his busy schedule holding up production, he said while laughing, “Everybody is hating on me on the internet and it’s not me! They’re like, ‘We know that you’re the reason.’ Maybe I was last year — maybe — but not this time.”

John Leguizamo recently revealed to Business Insider some of the roles he regrets turning down the most throughout his career. They include Stanley Tucci’s role as Nigel in “The Devil Wears Prada,” Robin Williams’ voice role in “Happy Feet” and Vince Vaughn’s role in the 2005 action movie “Mrs. and Mrs. Smith.” Vaughn starred opposite Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the latter film.
“I had my reasons. I mean, they’re stupid, but I had my reasons,” Leguizamo said about these decisions, adding that it was a salary concern that resulted in him turning down “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” The actor said he was offered to work for scale on the film, while Pitt and Jolie were getting a $20 million payday. Reports have surfaced over the years that it was Pitt who got $20 million, while Jolie earned $10 million.

Action romance is a tricky genre to master — it requires the right balance of heart and spectacle. But when done well, à la “True Lies” or “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” it will live on forever in the rewatch rotation.
Stunt coordinator-turned-director David Leitch has launched cars straight into the air and staged fight scenes that have had theaters erupting in thunderous cheers. His latest challenge, however, will be making the audience’s heart melt with “The Fall Guy,” in theaters now. Smartly, he cast Ryan Gosling, the living embodiment of a junior high schooler’s diary entry, to play the hero.
Adapted from the 1980s series, the Universal film follows down-at-his-heels action choreographer Colt Seavers (Gosling), who must unravel a treacherous mystery while on the set of the next big blockbuster. The movie happens to be directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt.

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. Pop quiz hot shot: What’s the best action movie of the past 20 or 30 years that never received a cinematic sequel? Nope, it’s not Speed. Is it Wanted? Nobody? The Accountant? How about Knight and Day or American Made? While the latter comes from director Doug Liman, we’d argue that the correct answer is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman’s eminently watchable assassin thriller that continues to shine thanks to the explosive chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, two luminous movie stars who met and fell in love during production. Although the movie earned decent reviews and grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith never received an official sequel or cinematic spinoff and is often remembered for the juicy tabloid gossip surrounding its two superstars.

At the start of the current Emmys season, our in-house editors and cadre of awards experts generally agreed that the next Best Drama Actress winner would be Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”). That wasn’t the case for long, however, as the expert odds have now consistently favored Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”) for over two months. Although the editors’ opinion is shared by a majority of our 2,000+ Emmy predictors, the experts could be onto something given the wide open nature of this and many more 2024 Emmy races.
Staunton’s claim to victory is strengthened by the fact that her show is the only past Best Drama Series nominee currently vying for that prize (which it won three years ago). It also helps that her supporting cast mate, Elizabeth Debicki, is her category’s obvious frontrunner due to her status as the sole 2023 drama acting contender eligible for an immediate return.

Of course, making a compelling action show is a tricky business, but there are a small number of projects that have managed to achieve the perfect mix of interesting storylines and thrilling action scenes, and critics have not hesitated to praise them.
