- TriviaThe 1202 program alarm that Renée Picard gets on her simulator run is one of the same error codes that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin experienced twice during their historic lunar descent during the Apollo 11 mission. At the time, this error indicates that the amount of data is greater than the computer can process.
- GoofsThe French police officer radios back to dispatch that the Picard vineyard looks abandoned. Ignoring that he somehow couldn't see Agnes sleeping on a sofa very near to him, Picard and Agnes had started a fire in the fireplace earlier. Even if the fire had gone out, the smell of it and fresh ashes would be a sure sign that the house was not abandoned.

A Senior Trekker writes.........................
I enjoyed this episode much more than the previous two and found myself swept along with the storyline rather than simultaneously critiquing it. This is a definite improvement but I've learned not to get my hopes up too high in the Kurtzman-verse. In the lead roles: Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Jeri Ryan and the token male, Santiago Cabrera (Picard is now an android, don't forget) all give lively and distinctive performances. Jonathan Frakes' directing lifts the pace and shares the attention around although Sir Patrick is looking and sounding distinctly fatigued these days.
This particular time-travel story is clearly some sort of substitute for the Mirror Universe because we are seeing all the old gang turn up in alternative roles: Soong, Soji, Laris and whoever else needs a quick cameo. We are half way through the season and can be pretty sure there will be more "surprises" but these days Senior Trekker predicts that they are more likely to be greeted with groans than with gasps. As for the time-travel inconsistency; we have already discovered with many previous iterations of Star Trek that it just doesn't matter if we are enjoying ourselves. It's Fiction.
Although I was sufficiently entertained not to be on the lookout for the Nu-Trek tropes, several were shoehorned into this episode. Mental illness is a serious subject which cannot be addressed in a few throwaway lines about someone suffering from lifelong depression. That's especially so when that someone has been chosen to bear the "Captain Marvel" mantle of 23 year old multi-lingual, superwoman genius test pilot. And she's Picard's ancestor as well. Was someone in the writer's room taking the piss?
Has Brent Spiner got himself onto the producers' list yet? If not, it can't be long before he does. For someone who made such a fuss about finding other opportunities outside of Star Trek we are clearly going to have to get used to a Soong for All Seasons. This one has been doing illicit experiments on military veterans (shorthand for the good guys) in partnership with non-military corporate sponsors (shorthand for the bad guys). I expect he'll turn out to be on the right side after all though, won't he?
For better or worse, all the remaining episodes of the remaining seasons of Star Trek Picard are already filmed. Patrick Stewart was deemed to have a limited insurable future and we, the established Star Trek audience, were deemed to have limited money-spinning potential. I'm sorry to have to admit that I'm beginning to find the whole experience leaving me feeling rather flat.
At the moment I am returning to review some of the Star Trek Enterprise episodes which I may have missed out first time around; several of them are surprisingly watchable. This will help me to spin out my retrospective of the Original Series and perhaps (who knows?) reconcile me to some of the excesses of the latter part of the Berman & Braga reign. You are always welcome to join me.
Senior Trekker scores every episode with a 5.
