Under executive director Roger Durling, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff, February 7-17, 2024) has thrived by not only mounting a film festival but surfing the awards season wave, programming a ton of onstage interviews with Oscar contenders.
Every year, screenwriters, directors, and producers promote their films on panels, and the likes of Kristen Stewart, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Nolan, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Bong Joon Ho, Adam Driver, Renée Zellweger, Laura Dern, Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong’o, Saoirse Ronan, Bruce Dern, Jeff Bridges, Melissa McCarthy, Isabelle Huppert, Viggo Mortensen, Rami Malek, Glenn Close, and Sam Elliott submit to in-depth tributes.
The panels, tributes, and special screenings lure local cinephiles and the area’s few hundred Academy members eager to hear Oscar contenders talk about their creative process. All tributes and panels are held in person at the historic Arlington Theatre, and they’re posted online.

“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster IMAX spectacle and Best Picture frontrunner, dominated the Oscar craft derby with seven nominations on January 23. The historical thriller about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) — the conflicted “father of the atomic bomb” — nearly ran the field with cinematography, costume design, production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing, score, and sound. The only misfire was getting snubbed as a visual effects finalist (it did not compete for original song).
Following right behind with six noms were Best Picture nominees “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things.” Martin Scorsese’s epic historical drama about the Osage Nation murders in 1920s Oklahoma exceeded expectations. It was honored for cinematography, costume design, production design, editing (a record ninth nomination for three-time winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker), score (for the late Robbie Robertson), and, in a surprise, original song for “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” by Scott George.

Thanks to “Oppenheimer,” Universal Pictures is one of the two studios tied for the most nominations at the 2024 Academy Awards in the top categories with a lucky 13 citations, all for the Christopher Nolan film. Searchlight Pictures also scored 13, earning a whopping 11 for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” one for “Flamin’ Hot” for Oscar-favorite songwriter Diane Warren and one for Documentary Short Film for “The Last Repair Shop.” See a list of nominations by studio in the top categories below.
Other studios that broke double digits include Netflix and Apple Original Films. Netflix’s tally includes nominations for “Maestro” with seven, “Nyad” with two, and one each for “American Symphony,” “El Conde,” “May December,” “Nimona,” “Rustin,” and “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” Note that these figures do not include all the contenders for the three short film categories. Apple Original Films earned all 10 of its nominations for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.

321 films are in contention for this year’s Academy Awards, while 265 features are eligible in the best picture category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday as it released its annual “reminder list” for members.
To be eligible in the general categories, films (meaning a runtime of more than 40 minutes) must open in a commercial theater in at least one of the following areas: Los Angeles County; the city of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, it must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue.
To be eligible for the best picture category specifically, the movies must be eligible for the general entry and have “submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form.” Additionally, the film must meet two of the four standards required, in addition to the theatrical component.

When we woke up on October 7 to the stories of the barbarity of Hamas, when we heard about the hostages, when we saw the footage of the obliterated homes on various kibbutzim, when we were told the massive death toll and saw kidnappings before our very eyes, when we heard about grotesque snuff videos on Facebook, it all seemed so surreal – an outlier even for a nightmare.
Last month I was in Israel, which is my homeland. I withstood a rocket attack. I stood in the ruins, in rooms and homes that were melted by the incendiary devices and thermobaric bombs, all of them charred to the darkest possible blacks. Some of the floors and walls still had blood spattered about them. If you looked up at the ceilings, you saw hundreds of holes created by the shrapnel of grenades. Many homes were leveled, save for the “safe rooms” which seemed to withstand the cataclysms.

Is Golda a bigger contender than predicted?
Not every Hollywood guild is in perpetual agreement with AMPAS. However, for most of them, the disagreement is unnoticeable until Oscar nomination morning. Not so with the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, Muahs for short, whose choices significantly differ from the 15-wide Academy shortlist. Despite having five categories with five nominees each, the guild managed to "snub" over half of AMPAS' selection. The only titles to appear in both lists are Maestro, Poor Things, Oppenheimer, and Golda, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of the Muahs nomination leaders after getting surprisingly shut out of the Oscar shortlist.

The only titles to appear in both lists are Maestro, Poor Things, Oppenheimer, and Golda, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of the Muahs nomination leaders after getting surprisingly shut out of the Oscar shortlist.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations for its awards before academy members start to vote. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, only four are vying for these precursor prizes: three-time nominee “Maestro,” two-time contender “Poor Things” plus “Golda” and “Oppenheimer.”
A half dozen films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “Beau Is Afraid,” “Ferrari,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” “Napoleon” and “Society of the Snow” — were snubbed by the guild.
The 11th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards are set for Feb. 18.
Best Period and/or Character Make-up
“Barbie,” Ivana Primorac, Victoria Down, Maha Mimo,
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3,” Alexei Dmitriew, Nicole Sortillon, Amos Samantha Ward, LuAndra Whitehurs
“Maestro,” Siann Grigg, Jackie Risotto, Elisa Tallerico, Nicky Pattison-Illum
“Oppenheimer,” Luisa Abel, Jason Hamer,...

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) has revealed the nominees for its annual Muahs Awards, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leading the feature competition with four nominations and Maestro close behind with three noms.
Disney/Marvel’s Guardians 3 earned noms in the categories for contemporary makeup, period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hairstyling and special makeup effects. Bradley Cooper’s Netflix Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro collected noms for period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hair styling and special makeup effects.
The Muahs Guild’s feature nominees vary quite bit from this season’s Oscar shortlist for the category. In fact, Guardians 3 was already snubbed in the makeup and hairstyling Oscar race, failing to make the shortlist of 10 films that advanced to the upcoming branch bake-off.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” led the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.
The final installment of the “Guardians” franchise used over 22,500 prosthetics, 500 wigs and 130 facial hairpieces, breaking the world record for most prosthetics used in a film. It was nominated in special makeup effects, period and character makeup and period hair styling. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” also landed nods for character hair styling and contemporary makeup.
“Barbie” scored two nominations. Notably, neither that film nor “Guardians” landed on the Oscars makeup and hairstyling shortlist. “Golda,” “Maestro” and “Poor Things” were also in the running for guild nominations.
In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” dominated with five nominations. Six makeup artists were nominated in best special makeup effects due to a tie.
As previously announced, Michael Westmore, the award-winning makeup artist behind “Rocky” and “Raging Bull,” will be honored with the Vanguard Award.

The motion picture academy has handed out Oscars for leading performances since the first ceremony in 1929. While the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran, the Best Actress Oscar has tended to go to an ingenue. However, those age biases could be changing.
While a whopping 32 of the 96 Best Actress champs were in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last five women to win were: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand, 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). Yeoh’s closest rival last year was Cate Blanchett, 53, for “Tar.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Actress.)
Besides Zellweger, the only other Best Actress champs in their 50s were both 54 when they won: Julianne Moore, who finally prevailed after four losses for “Still Alice...

The current Oscar frontrunners for Best Actor and Best Actress according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users are Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”). However, they both face serious competition from the stars of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan. If the co-stars both win, “Maestro” would be the first film since “As Good As It Gets” to win both lead acting Oscars.
SEEBradley Cooper (‘Maestro’) makes Critics Choice Awards history
“Maestro” chronicles the decades-long relationship between conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and actress Felicia Montealegre (Mulligan). Their love story spans over 30 years from the time they met at a party in 1946 and continuing through their quarter-century marriage. But winning matching Oscars isn’t easy. To date only seven films have won both lead acting awards. They are:
“It Happened One Night” (1934) – Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) – Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher...

The Oscar shortlists were released December 21 ahead of the nominations on January 23, 2024, and here we’re covering the crafts of makeup and hairstyling, original score, sound, and visual effects.
The big winners — appearing on three lists — were Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon”, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,”, and J.A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow”.
In fact, “Napoleon,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow” have the potential to be late-season craft juggernauts in competition with “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie,” which scored on two lists (original score and sound).
Also making two lists were Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” (makeup and hairstyling and sound), James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (score and visual effects), Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” (makeup and hairstyling and sound), Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced shortlists in 10 categories for the 96th Academy Awards. 15 films from each of the categories below were shortlisted. There were no surprises when it came to most of the big film Oscar nominations like ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. India’s Oscar entry ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ did not make the cut in a strong International feature film lineup. There were some surprises as well with Chilean film ‘The Settlers’, Argentinian film ‘The Delinquents’ and Turkish film ‘About Dry Grasses’ being snubbed.

“I didn’t really know a lot about her,” reveals “Golda” star Dame Helen Mirren while discussing her role of Golda Meir, the first female prime minister of Israel. “All I knew is when she came to power it was an incredibly important moment for me as a woman to realize that women could be prime ministers. It was an unknown thing in those days. Now it’s completely accepted. But it was completely unaccepted in the era when Golda came to power. It was absolutely revelatory. It was an important moment for me to realize what women could do.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Last month, we heard that Bleecker Street, a studio that has previously brought us films like Logan Lucky, Captain Fantastic, Trumbo, and Golda, among many others, will be giving the Stone Age horror thriller Out of Darkness (which was formerly going by the title The Origin) a theatrical release in the United States on February 9, 2024. With that date right around the corner, a trailer for the film has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Out of Darkness has been making the festival rounds recently and even earned nominations in five categories at the British Independent Film Awards. Safia Oakley-Green won in the Breakthrough Performance category.

Fathom Events, the company best known for bringing theater, opera, live events and concerts to screens, is currently on track for gross revenues of over $93 million. Despite the fact that the exhibition space has yet to fully recover from the Covid pandemic, Fathom is enjoying the best year in its history — it will surpass sales from 2019, previously the highest-grossing year in company history, by 116%. For further context, Fathom reported revenues of $68 million in 2022.
So what’s behind the surge? Fathom is chalking up the strong results to a pivot in business strategy for the company, one that saw it introduce a “specialty distribution” model. The goal was to bring a wider array of content to cinemas beyond the productions of the Metropolitan Opera that helped put Fathom on the map. It’s one that saw Fathom distribute faith-based films like “The Blind,” as well as release episodes of “The Chosen,...

Usually, I’m the guy who can always find a way to turn the positive to the painful, who sees the glass not as half-full or half-empty but not even a glass at all – more like a cracked plastic container. And God knows there are a zillion things going on in the world and right here to home to be depressed about. But in a rare departure from form, I’m choosing this Thanksgiving to actually be thankful, at least when it comes to our entertainment (and a few other things).
What am I giving thanks for this year?
I’m thankful, first and foremost, that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are over, and it appears great strides were made to benefit the rank and file in the guilds. It’s what makes the work stoppage necessary. I’m thankful that the forecasts of doom and gloom for the...

As the actors strike finally came to an end Wednesday night, the celebrations of some — namely, awards-contending talent and awards campaigners — were tempered by a certain amount of stress, given that many will now have to cram months worth of campaigning into just a few weeks.
Some weren’t and won’t be terribly affected by the strike. For instance, the Barbie and Oppenheimer teams did a heavy round of promotion just before the work stoppage began, and the Napoleon and The Color Purple teams won’t even begin showing their cards until next week. Additionally, a number of other contenders were exempt from the rules of the strike because their distributors had signed interim agreements with SAG-AFTRA and/or because they were made outside of the U.S. and therefore not subject to guild rules — that was certainly a boon for titles like A24’s The Zone of Interest,...

An entertainment-industry crowd turned out on Wednesday for the Los Angeles premiere of “Bearing Witness to the October 7th Massacre,” a controversial 47-minute documentary assembled by the Israeli Defense Forces.
“Witness” features extremely graphic footage from the atrocities committed last month that claimed the lives of 1,400 Israelis and resulted in terrorist group Hamas taking 240 hostages. The images were culled from hundreds of hours of footage retrieved from terrorist body cams, security cameras, victims’ mobile phones and other sources.
Protesters waving Israeli and Palestinian flags gathered outside the Museum of Tolerance, which was under heavy protection by the Los Angeles Police Department, where the screening took place. Multiple fights reportedly broke out outside the event but no arrests were made.
The incident prompted LA Mayor Karen Bass to take to social media to lament the “unacceptable violence,” and called for “unity in our city.”

Tuesday night, on the one-month anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack on southern and central Israel that sparked the nation’s biggest conflict in 50 years, an audience gathered at the Linwood Dunn Theater of the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Studies in Hollywood for a packed industry screening of – and panel discussion following – the powerful biopic “Golda” starring Helen Mirren in the title role as former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. As previously announced, Mirren — who is getting awards buzz for her role as Golda Meir in Golda — will receive the 37th American Cinematheque Award. Kevin Goetz & Screen Engine will be honored with the Power of Cinema Award.
This is the annual fundraiser for the organization, with proceeds benefiting its classic, international and independent film programs at the Los Feliz 3 Theatre in Los Angeles, the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. A portion of the funds supports American Cinematheque’s commitment to diversified programming and audience reach, through engaging with Los Angeles County’s 88 school districts to broaden the AC Educational Screening Series.

When skepticism about the savagery of attacks by Hamas terrorists against Jews in Israel first surfaced, the Israel Defense Forces put together 45 minutes of gruesome imagery — most of it shot by the perpetrators — of murder, beheadings, rapes and other atrocities against Jewish adults and children. Initially shown to world leaders, ambassadors and journalists covering the attack and the ensuing response by Israel military forces, that footage will be shown this week in screenings organized in Hollywood and New York.
Several in Hollywood who are Jewish spoke with me to see if I’d been among those who were torn over whether they needed to subject themselves to footage which will be presented without narration, and the only sounds coming from terrorists committing the atrocities, and the victims who believed something like this could never happen again. Right now, there is only the screenings this week — Deadline agreed to not divulge...

Helen Mirren’s ardent feminism came to the fore Thursday night when the Oscar-winning actress was asked during a keynote conversation in Toronto what she looked forward to beyond the “horrible situation” of the current Israel-Hamas war.
“Gosh, that’s an incredibly difficult question, because you don’t want to be naïve and silly. Of course one hopes for peace,” Mirren told the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center during an appearance at its 2023 Spirit of Hope Benefit.
Then she added: “Honestly, ultimately, I’m going to say I look forward to women taking a stronger place in life. Because I think that may be our hope for the future.”
Praised as a steadfast ally in the fight against anti-Semitism by the human rights organization after she received their 2023 Humanitarian Award, Mirren’s informal conversation was overshadowed by events in the Middle East after Israel declared war on the Hamas terrorist...

“God, it’s fucking crazy,” Guy Nattiv said with exasperation when we connected by phone this week, in the aftermath of the Hamas attack on Israel that has resulted in the deaths and hostage-taking of hundreds of Israelis. “This is a holocaust.”
Nattiv, the first Israeli filmmaker to ever win an Oscar — he won best live action short for 2018’s Skin — and the director of the 2023 film Golda, which chronicles Golda Meir’s response to the 1973 surprise attack on Israel that resulted in the Yom Kippur War, has lived in the United States for the past decade, since he met the woman who would become his wife, the actress-filmmaker Jaime Ray Newman. But he remains deeply connected to Israel, where many of his family members and friends still reside. Paris Fashion Week isn’t just for the young and fashionable, and Dame Helen Mirren proved just that as she walked the runway for the L’Oreal fashion show.
Mirren, 78, wore a shimmering silver gown for the show with her hair blown out, as it framed her glowing face. Unlike the Cannes Film Festival this year, when she dyed her hair blue, Mirren wore her natural locks for the fashion show.
Mirren wasn’t the only star to grace the L’Oreal runway, though, as Andie MacDowell, Kendall Jenner, Eva Longoria, Viola Davis, Elle Fanning and Aishwarya Rai were also there.

Helen Mirren Claps Back At Backlash Over ‘Golda’ Casting, Insists She Told Director ‘I’m Not Jewish’
Backlash over Helen Mirren’s casting in “Golda”, a new biopic about late Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, has flared up, and Mirren is responding.
Speaking with Britain’s Radio Times, the Oscar winner said that she understands criticisms that she — a non-Jewish actor — is playing an iconic Jewish woman.
“I did tell Guy that I’m not Jewish, in case he thought I was.”
While controversy over her casting emerged last year, Mirren told the magazine that “the whole issue of casting has exploded out of the water fairly recently.”

Helen Mirren thinks it is “ridiculous” that writers are being told to stay in their lanes.
The Oscar-winning actress has railed against the idea that writers can only tell stories about their own race or religion after the so-called “Jewface” row over her new movie Golda.
“It’s more frightening for a writer to be told they are not allowed to write about subjects with which they don’t have an immediate DNA connection,” Mirren told the Radio Times. “I imagine it must be very alarming. And ridiculous.”
Mirren was responding to a statement from Golda writer Nicholas Martin, who said there is a “creeping authoritarianism” in the entertainment industry, leading to writers being told they “cannot do this or that.” He told the Radio Times: “Am I just supposed to write about middle-aged men living in south London?”
Neither Mirren nor Martin are Jewish, meaning they have been criticized for their involvement in Golda,...

Dame Helen Mirren has acknowledged there is a "very delicate balance" to playing people with a different heritage. The 78-year-old star plays former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in Guy Nattiv's biopic 'Golda' although her casting was met with a backlash because she is not Jewish and she "can see" why some are uncomfortable with her role.Speaking on the BBC's 'Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg', Helen said: "I think I can see, but sometimes I can't see, because, I can't see who in this room is Jewish."We are all such an amazing mix and certainly I don't have an issue with Kirk Douglas playing a Viking. Kirk Douglas was Jewish."Bradley Cooper also faced criticism for wearing make-up to amplify the size of his nose as he depicts conductor Leonard Bernstein in the Netflix film 'Maestro' and Mirren realises the pitfalls of playing characters from different cultures.
