Ott platforms have not just changed the rules of the entertainment market, they have given, literally, a second life to Bollywood stars who had faded away from the public eye for quite some time. Of late, a number of senior actors, who had virtually retired from the industry or had limited theatrical releases, are now being reinvented and getting a hugely positive response to their work, courtesy of streaming platforms.
Here’s a list of nine actors who are back in the reckoning in their second innings because of Ott:
Harman Baweja
The actor made his debut with the 2008 release “Love Story 2050”, directed by his father Harry Baweja, and charmed the audience with his dancing skills (and little else!), but he was dismissed by all as the poor man’s Hrithik Roshan.
Hansal Mehta’s streaming series “Scoop”, which sees a no-longer-chocolate-boy Harman back in action as Joint Commissioner...

Hindi cinema has very rarely excelled in the satire genre. The only movie I can think of that is still considered one of the best satires is Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, which was released 40 years ago. Pk and Peepli Live are some recent examples of decent satire. Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery, the latest Netflix India original, is a decent attempt to make satire a part of our discourse, and rightly so because it is high time this form of comedy is utilized instead of relying on either slapstick or situational comedy, both of which have been overused in this industry. Directed by Yashowardhan Mishra, the movie is a tale of two exotic jackfruits getting stolen from an Mla’s home, with the entire police force of the town being assigned to look for them. The police force’s mind-boggling investigation is the charm of the movie. Will they get their hands on them?...

Bollywood film 'Lagaan' (2001)—about 19th-century Indian villagers who challenge the British to a cricket match in order to free themselves from oppressive taxes—made Time magazine's list of the 25 best sports movies of all time.
The magazine called 'Lagaan' "surely the longest and most enthralling underdog-sports movie ever."
'Lagaan' was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film—only the third Hindi-language film in history to get an Oscar nod, after 'Mother India' (1957) and 'Salaam Bombay' (1988). The movie introduced many Americans to Bollywood for the first time.
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan starred in and produced the film. It was the debut release of Aamir Khan Productions, which has since developed a reputation for selectivity, producing such well-regarded films as 'Peepli Live' (2010). 'Lagaan' was helmed by Ashutosh Gowariker, who later directed the award-winning 'Swades' (2004) and 'Jodhaa Akbar' (2008).

Bollywood audiences are turning away from aspirational films and towards once-taboo topics: poverty, corruption, the caste system. Nirpal Dhaliwal on how the mood darkened
Over the last 20 years, India's rapid economic growth and the expansion of its middle class has had the effect of turning commercial Hindi cinema into a dream factory, full of glossy urban characters, speaking Hinglish, draping themselves in designer labels and hanging out at the mall. Romances and dramas involving wealthy families living in mansions and driving BMWs has been the staple for a generation of aspirational filmgoers who have enjoyed a level of affluence unprecedented in their country's history. It was a phenomenon assisted by Indians overseas, who wanted films that sentimentalised their homeland and elided any of its harsh realities; the box-office receipts were too lucrative to ignore. But now, economic development has brought about a social and cinematic tipping point, with a middle class that is large,...

The lead roles were portrayed by some of the best in the industry including Sanjay Suri, Rahul Bose, Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala, Arjun Mathur and Nandita Sen to name a few. Not only were the stories and the cast impressive, the project was funded in a unique way. The first of its kind, the films were funded through crowd sourcing and people from all over the world contributed to make these films a reality. Be it the rural flavour of "Ishqiya", the sexual overtones of "Love Sex Aur Dhokha" or the urban adult comedy "Delhi Belly", notice how unconventional themes are being lapped up by moviegoers? Viewer tastes appear to be changing as new age filmmakers endeavour to stay away from the larger-than-life characters, melodrama and typical romances Bollywood has always been known for. New entrant Imran Khan, the lead actor of adult comedy "Delhi Belly", who is flourishing under the umbrella of his talented uncle Aamir Khan, feels the new lot of filmmakers is the baton carrier and "the industry has opened up a lot more". "Writers, producers and actors have opened so much to off-beat cinema and the audience has grown alongside," he added. Despite being tagged as an A-movie, replete with expletives and with no-morals attached, Imran's "Delhi Belly" hit the right chord and its success has proved that moviebuffs are coming of age too.

Director Abhinay Deo is well known in the entertainment circuit as he has directed over 250 advertisements and then he moved on to do feature films. The young director made his debut in Hindi cinema with the Abhishek Bachchan starrer Game, however Game was actually his second film. Delhi Belly was his first full-length film as director. The comedy was shot in 2008/2009 and was completed even before Game began, but was delayed for release. Produced by Aamir Khan, Delhi Belly stars Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapoor and is an “irreverent and fun film” according to Deo. It was selected as the opening film of The London Indian Film Festival 2011. Deo jetted into London to be there at the World Premiere of the film and took some time out to chat to us.

She sat down and talked with us about working with Imran, Aamir and what you will say while watching this film!

A new wave of Indian independent film is breaking the all-singing, all-dancing stereotype of Bollywood via low-cost, offbeat movies and edgier subject matter
A sleazy shop assistant seduces a vulnerable colleague for a money-spinning sex tape; two hopelessly-in-love students are brutally murdered by the girl's family; an intrepid TV reporter embarks on an expose of the notorious casting couch. This triptych of stories set in 21st-century metropolitan India unfolds over 98 minutes of blurry, trembling CCTV, mobile phone, camcorder and hidden-camera footage in the film LSD: Love, Sex Aur Dhokha (Love, Sex and Betrayal).
Surely the only Indian film to reference sex and drugs in both its title and abbreviation, LSD: Love, Sex Aur Dhokha is one of the new wave of Indian indies – edgy, off-beat films challenging the stereotype of Indian cinema as tear-jerking, all-singing, all-dancing Bollywood. It fared more than respectably when it was released in India last year,...

You could call it a 'desi' version of Bob Dylan's social poetry set to music - novel to the ears. Contemporary urban music in India is drawing its soul from tradition, narratives from socio-political circumstances and beats from Western pop, rock and funk genres. Journalist-turned-Bollywood composer and writer Neelesh Misra, who released his band's new album, 'Rewind: Nine Lost Memories', at a concert in the capital Wednesday has combined the north Indian storytelling traditions of Dastangoi with funk rock in his new album. The album tells the story of an upwardly mobile small-town young man in a metro - who suffers the pangs of love, loss, loneliness and the blues that come with a clash of values. 'I would describe my music as 'funk kissagoi (storytelling)', a modern take on the medieval story telling tradition of Dastangoi of Islamic origin. It is a meeting point of Dastangoi and contemporary funk-rock,...

It's a well-known fact that Aamir Khan doesn't believe in award functions but in the past the actor-filmmaker did make an exception as far as the National Awards were concerned. But now Aamir has revealed that as a company policy, Aamir Khan Productions, wouldn't be sending their films to compete at any award function, not even the coveted National Award. It may be recalled that earlier this year Anusha Rizvi (director of Peepli Live) was upset at her film not being sent to the National Awards but it being the producer's decision she couldn't do much about it. Aamir has gone on to say that for him, awards really don't matter and the only thing that matters is the audiences' response to his films.
