Los Angeles -- As a kid in the 1960s, reality TV king Mark Burnett was thrilled by the special-effects miracle of a sundered Red Sea in "The Ten Commandments."
"How cool was that?" said the producer of "Survivor" and "The Apprentice," who watched Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 film when it aired on television.
Now it's Burnett's turn to wow a small-screen audience with epic Scripture stories: He and his wife, actress Roma Downey, are producing the 10-part docudrama "The Bible" for the History channel.
It's set to air in 2013, History channel President Nancy Dubuc said Tuesday.
The series will combine live action with computer-generated imagery to retell stories ranging from Noah and the Ark to Exodus to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Shooting is planned for the Middle East and elsewhere.

As the nominations were unveiled Tuesday morning for the American Cinema Editors' 60th annual Ace Eddie Awards, this year's awards season is looking more and more like a Hollywood version of Comic-Con.
Just like the Art Directors Guild, the editors organization nominated "Avatar," "District 9" and "Star Trek."
Those three movies will compete for best edited dramatic feature film along with "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air."
Two Meryl Streep vehicles -- "Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated" -- were nominated in the best comedy or musical category along with "(500) Days of Summer," "The Hangover" and "A Serious Man."
For best animated film, the contenders are "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Up."
"This Is It," the Michael Jackson documentary, scored a slot in Ace's best documentary race alongside "The Cove" and "Food, Inc."
An honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950, Ace's noms usually point toward Oscar victory...

As if attempting to undo the carnal sins perpetrated against the sanctity of television by I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, Expedition Africa captures some glimpse of the truly savage visage of the outdoors while still giving reality tv junkies the “human drama” they so crave. Face it: I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! hasn’t a single redeeming factor. It wasn’t original as the basic blueprint comes from either Big Brother or Survivor. Nor was it daring or edgy as it took the basic premise of Fear Factor and put it in the middle of a jungle. The contestants never really had to worry about a force of nature endangering their lives as they may as well have been on a big set in a studio considering how many safeguards were in place. If you have to ask, yes, I would much...

Chicago – Mark Burnett is a man who knows no shame. The phenomenal success he’s found with shows such as “Survivor” and “The Apprentice” have cemented his reputation as the Jerry Bruckheimer of television. There isn’t a moment in any of his reality TV spectacles that feels spontaneous or authentic. And yet his shows are so popular with undiscerning viewers that they’ve basically become critic-proof. As eye candy they’re often delectable, but as brain food, they’re no more substantial than McDonald’s.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0
One of Burnett’s new shows this year was “Expedition Africa,” which premiered on The History Channel in May. It is undoubtedly his most transparent exercise in audience manipulation to date. The show features four explorers who embark on the same 970-mile journey through Africa taken by Henry Morton Stanley to find Dr. David Livingstone.

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...
