Prior to his work on "Star Wars" in 1977, actor and bodybuilder David Prowse had made a career playing goons, creatures, and bodyguards in high-profile movies. Prowse played Frankenstien's monster in the Hammer film "The Horror of Frankenstein," a role he had already played briefly in the 1967 version of "Casino Royale." He played a comedic torturer in "Carry On, Henry," the 21st "Carry On" movie. Most visibly, Prowse played the muscular bodyguard for the injured old Frank (Patrick Magee) in Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." He was the one who got to cradle Malcolm McDowell like a baby. This was easy for Prowse, who stood six-foot-six.
The actor also played Darth Vader "Star Wars," "The Star Wars Holiday Special," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi" ... but only in the scenes wherein Darth Vader wore a mask. In "Jedi," when Vader finally revealed his face, Prowse was replaced by actor Sebastian Shaw.

Atomica, the new film from director Dagen Merrill, is a small-scale, character-based science fiction movie about two people stranded together in a single location and learning to live with one another while they both possibly conceal secrets. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it could also describe the Chris Pratt/Jennifer Lawrence vehicle, Passengers, from late 2016. I make this comparison not to suggest the former copied the latter—Atomica is no “mockbuster” imitation—but instead just to say that if I had to choose between Passengers and Atomica, I’d go with Atomica.

In his 1960s and ’70s heyday as the king of drive-in flicks and low-budget exploitation, Roger Corman was the single greatest patron of budding talent in the world. The list of filmmakers and actors who either got their start or their big break working for him goes on and on: Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Peter Bogdanovich, John Sayles, Charles Bronson, Robert Towne.
Alas, Corman has long since traded cheap thrills for pure cheapness. Given that most of his time is now occupied with Syfy monster movies like Piranhaconda, Sharktopus Vs. Pteracuda, and Dinocroc Vs. Supergator, a sequel to 1975’s sleazy, tongue-in-cheek Death Race 2000 might sound like a partial return to form.

Wanna know how some of your favorite sounds, action sequences, or visual effects were created? Daily Dead got a chance to do a Q&A with the VFX Legion team who worked on The Purge: Anarchy, Hardcore Henry, Ouija, and more. Also in today’s Horror Highlights: a Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre Blu-ray clip and trailer as well as three promo videos for Sadako vs Kayako.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us. Can you give our readers an idea of what the VFX Legion team does to improve the look of a film and enhance the cinematic experience for viewers?
There are a lot of things that make up a movie. There’s sound, acting, locations, lighting, editing, and often times, visual effects. There are a ton of aspects to visual effects.

What combination of things makes even less sense than a tornado made of sharks? How about a post-apocalyptic zombie Western made by and starring boy bands? Sheer absurd randomness (and its attendant clickbait) seems to be the well from which Syfy's Dead 7 was sprung, the latest original movie from the network that has brought us such single-serving classics as Sharknado, Dinocroc vs. Supergator and Titanic II. Like many that have come before it, this genre mash-up walks the crooked line between knowing how bad it is and taking itself just a tad too seriously.

Seriously. Do I have to lay out the plot of a film called Zombeavers? It features zombie beavers. What else do you need to know? Oh well, here goes: Three college friends decide to spend the weekend at a riverside cabin in the woods, man free, after one of the trio splits up with her boyfriend. However the boys see things differently and invite themselves on the trip in the hopes of having a debauched weekend filled with sex and booze. Little do the group know, they are right next door to a lodge of beavers who have been mutated, by an accidental toxic waste spill, into rabid zombeavers.
See, did I really need to explain that? Kids go woods. Kids get dead.

Perhaps predictably, Syfy has green-lit a third Sharknado movie, according to Adweek. The sequel, Sharknado 2: The Second One, premieres in July, but the low-budget schlocktaculars more or less spawn themselves. For some reason, Sharknado garnered a huge amount of attention last summer, even though it's ludicrous plot, garbagetown production values, and C-list cast define just about every Syfy movie. Where's the threequel for Mansquito? Or Dinocroc vs. Supergator? Dog Soldiers? Mongolian Death Worm? Frankenfish? Flu Bird Horror? Those are all real, and just as terrible as Sharknado.

If you've looking for a movie that has one character shouting "That is exactly what the beavers would want!" at another, you're in so much luck. Today brings you the trailer for... Zombeavers. Click on the YouTubes for a closer look at the gnashery nastiness. Billed as this year's Sharknado, the so-bad-we-thought-it-might-be-good-but-it-was-actually-just-really-bad Z-movie, Zombeavers is the spoofy handiwork of director Jordan Rubin, a Carson Daly Show alumnus, and screenwriters Al and Jon Kaplan. A cursory glance at their CVs finds the amazing-sounding Piranhaconda and Dinocroc Vs. Supergator, and this one extends the silliness to a cabin filled with randy students and a dam filled with hell rodents. No word on a likely UK release date for this one but it has a tagline - 'You'll all be damned' - that alone makes it worthy of the widest possible release.

Zombies, vampires and werewolves, oh my! Classic monsters are always a good way for horror filmmakers to go, but sometimes we see more... unique... beasties on the screen. And when they go well (and even when they don't), they're some of the most memorable characters in the genre.
In celebration of the Irish sci-fi comedy film Grabbers, which hit VOD and other digital outlets on July 19 and contains some pretty wild monsters of its own, we've compiled a list of Horror's Top 13 Craziest Monsters!
As always, we'd like to start out with some honorable mentions. Slither and its old school relative Night of the Creeps both gave us a swarm of memorable leech-like monsters. The Host dropped us into an unexpected nightmare on a typical South Korean afternoon with a very unique movie monster. And even though he ended up going mainstream and had his own Saturday morning cartoon, The...

"Sharknado" aired on the Syfy channel yesterday, becoming a massive topic of conversation on Twitter (5,000 posts per minute), including among celebrities like Damon Lindelof, Mia Farrow, Patton Olswalt and Michael Chiklis. But despite the fact that only 1.4 million people watched the movie, which is five times less than a "Game of Thrones" episode and even less than other Syfy films like "Dinocroc vs. Supergator," the network is moving forward with a sequel. According to director Anthony Ferrante, "Sharknado" had a screenplay that would've needed $100 million to turn it into a movie. But the entire thing was done for around $1 million, with about a third of it going to special effects. The plan now is to re-air the movie on July 18th. It's tough to say what kind of nonsense the Syfy channel is planning next. But the internet has some ideas. Check them out below. Posters: (click to enlarge)...

Did you binge-watch Arrested Development yesterday and now you need more? Let’s hope Buzzfeed‘s ranking of the its 30 favorite guest stars does the trick.
By the way, there’s no such software as ShowStealer Pro.
I’m tempted to pull out that old “our long national nightmare is over” joke with the news that Fox reality TV executive Mike Darnell has quit at Fox, as initially reported by Deadline. Darnell has been at Fox for 19 years, which pre-dates the rise of reality TV and his early days include specials like When Animals Attack! and Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?. His most valuable contribution to culture is that many probably people know about the Milgram experiment thanks to the ways Fox’s reality programs repeatedly inspired critics to make comparisons to the infamous study. A part of Darnell’s legacy, as Andy Dehnart notes is a long...

With the recent announcement of Zombies vs. Gladiators, Amazon Studios' upcoming Clive Barker project, it's official: All you need to make a movie these days is a script whose title is composed of two nouns separated by a "vs."
This approach to moviemaking might seem simplistic and/or lazy, but it has one major thing going for it — everything you need to know about the product film is in the title. And that's a godsend to a production company's marketing department.
Obviously, this strategy must work, because producers are returning repeatedly to the Well of Versus. To illustrate my point, the following is a partial list of "vs." films:
Monsters vs. Aliens
Mega Python vs. Gatoroid
Dinocroc vs. Supergator
Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys
Eagle vs. Shark
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Alien vs. Predator
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
Freddy vs. Jason

Sharktopus. Dinoshark. Dinocroc. All pale in comparison to Syfy’s upcoming “2 Creatures for the Price of 1” extravaganza, Piranhaconda. Roger Corman’s latest killer hybrid is scheduled to air on the network in October. In somewhat inevitable news, it stars the awesome Michael Madsen along with Rachel Hunter and is directed by Jim Wynorski.
Who is responsible for unleashing the half-piranha/half-anaconda on the unsuspecting masses? That would be writer Mike MacLean, who also penned Sharktopus and Dinocroc vs. Supergator for Syfy.
MacLean talked to Shock about writing creature features, working with Roger Corman, the differences between cable and theatrical movies, why comedy is a vital component of Syfy features, and more.

Why does anyone love to watch terrible movies? Maybe we’re drawn in by the bad acting or we wonder why someone like David Carradine was in Dinocroc vs. Supergator. It could be because we want to watch an preposterous concept like Sharktopus, and we hope that just this once, it will actually be a masterpiece. For me, I’m always waiting for the creature reveal. When it comes to recent Roger Corman releases, you can bet on a spectacle of the fantastic and absurd.
With nearly 400 titles under his belt as a producer, Roger Corman is the king of B-movies. While Corman’s monster films might not be for everyone, you can’t deny that he has played a significant role in the horror genre. His work in horror spans decades, bringing us classics like Piranha, The Little Shop of Horrors (1965), and The Terror. Of Course, the movies included...

Arachnophobes, beware! The latest creature feature confection from producer Roger Corman and director Jim Wynorski will be skittering its eight legs to DVD shelves this March. Save us, Brian Krause! Save us, C. Thomas Howell! Save us from these big mutant Camel Spiders!
Based on actual creatures that for years have tormented our armed forces in the Middle East, these creatures have now invaded the southwestern deserts of the United States. The camel spiders now freely hunt for prey, unafraid of any predator - including man. No place is safe; no one is beyond their paralyzing sting. In the end a small band of hearty fighters are forced to make one last stand against the creatures.
Brian Krause of “Charmed” and C. Thomas Howell of 25% of all direct-to-dvd movies of the past two decades star in the Roger Corman/Cinetel co-production Camel Spiders from the director of Chopping Mall and...

Tony Randel (Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Fist of the North Star) and Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall, Not of This Earth, The Return of the Swamp Thing, Dinocroc vs. Supergator) will be co-directing a remake of The Giant Gila Monster, the public domain (meaning you too can remake this movie) black and white horror flick from 1959. Playboy Playmate Julie McCullough will starring alongside Terence Knox, Matt Austin, Ellen Kingston and Jenna Ruiz, reports Robert Hood. Bill Dever and Jim Nielsen are producing. The original, directed by Ray Kellogg, follows a giant lizard that terrorizes a rural Texas community with a heroic teenager attempting to destroy the creature.

What motion picture could possibly be so epic it would require the combined directorial talents of the director of Hellbound: Hellraiser II and the director of Chopping Mall? Would you believe a remake of the 1959 bad movie classic The Giant Gila Monster?
If you’re going to remake a movie, you might as well remake a bad one, and The Giant Gila Monster is most definitely a bad movie. Sure, the ultra low budget 1959 drive-in creature feature that used footage of a real live gila monster as its greatest special effect has marked its place as a classic b-movie; let’s just not kid ourselves about it actually being a good movie.
So can a low budget remake of The Giant Gila Monster actually make a good movie out of hallmark of bad cinema? It certainly can’t tarnish its legacy.

Two scientifically altered creatures eat up all the locals and vacationers on a small island before duking it out battle royale style for supremacy.
Let's talk about the intent behind a film like Dinocroc vs. Supergator. First off, it is not something to be token seriously or straight forward. It's the kind of entertainment that is supposed to recall all those cheesy monster movies that were produced back in the 50's. The acting is supposed to be campy. The situations are supposed to be exaggerated. The special effects are supposed to look cheap. There is supposed to be an inherent humor about how goofy the film is as a whole. And, of course, it's all supposed to be rather tacky and trashy.

Spores Monster movies have been making a comeback, due in part to maverick producer Roger Corman (Piranha), who has brought monsters to the mainstream with a series of cheesy, but fun horror films such as Dinoshark starring Eric Balfour, Sharktopus starring Eric Roberts, or the upcoming Dinocroc vs. Supergator featuring David Carradine. Now the Russian film market is jumping in on the action with Spores. Spores looks like it is the type of film that delivers that sense of cheesy fun just like all those other monster movies that Corman produced only with an attractive cast of teen actors at the fore front of the action. So take a peek at the film's trailer, seen below after the jump.
Raven Banner Entertainment is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of independent Russian filmmaker, Maksim Dyachuk, sci-fi creature feature Spores. Inspired by Gareth Edwards’ critically acclaimed, self made feature film “Monsters...

It's one thing thing to make a monster mash-up: Dinocroc, Sharktopus, Piranhaconda, but what does a seasoned creature-feature producer do when he's run out of creatures to feature? If you're Roger Corman you take it to the next level. You have a monster mash-up smash-up.
That's right, now out on Blu-ray and DVD, Dinocroc Vs. Supergator. Billed as the ultimate monster smackdown, the movie stars the late David Carradine in one of his final roles as a mad scientist who, in the bowels of his secret laboratory, creates the mutant titans, and god help any innocent bystanders. Anchor Bay will release Dinocroc Vs. Supergator, the latest giant monster smackdown movie from legendary film impresario Roger Corman (Sharktopus), on Blu-ray and DVD on July 12.
The rumble is on in Dinocroc Vs. Supergator.
Scientist Jason Drake (the late David Carradine, Dark Fields) has been holed up deep within a secret island laboratory of an unscrupulous biotech corporation meddling with the laws of nature, as isolated scientists are wont to do. When he turns his attention from mutating fruits and vegetables to alligators, crocodiles and dinosaurs, something’s bound to grow to horrific proportions and escape—like a gargantuan crocodile and an equally humungous alligator. So, when the titular Dinocroc and Supergator get loose, the two quickly enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet of scientists, tourists, mercenaries and swimsuit models…until their inevitable showdown against each other.
Directed by genre journeyman Jim Wynorski (The Hills Have Thighs) and co-starring Corey Landis, Amy Rasimas...

So you say it’s been a day or two since you’ve seen a monster movie that enlists the utter ridiculousness in a mix of awful effects, bad writing and terrible acting...SyFy Originals to the rescue! From the incomparable genius that brought us Sharktopus and Dinocroc Vs. Supergator comes another testament of pure brilliance and utter monstrous terror, Piranhaconda……no seriously....
Roger Corman is at it again as producer while Jim Wynorski directs. As always, the cast is filing out with a group of actors who fall into the “oh man, they used to be really cool” category. It's hard to believe, but this is what I'm doing with my Saturday night. It won't be as bad as The Client List (it's can't be. Please, God, don't let it be worse than The Client List), but it's not gonna be good. Once again, additional commentary is provided by Mrs. Tk. And we are joined by one surly cat named Little Man and one mildly retarded one named Desmond.
Let's rock.
9:00 - Holy fucking balls, Sharktopus has its own theme song. It's some kind of freaky surf rock track. "Sharktopus won't be kept at bay, and you can never ever ever ever get away." I think I'm in love.
9:02 - First gratuitous ass shot. Two minutes in. Damn, that's impressive. Oh, this girl is gonna get herself all kinds of eaten.
Wait, no, I'm wrong. Sharktopus sighting already, and it just fucked up a great white shark.
