Shocking Ending
natesmithe6 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The tension leading up to the end was really great, I didn't see the episode ending with Jake not being able to save Hassan but, was I the only one screaming at the TV, "stop the internet broadcast before it showed his death." I have only seen the episode once but I would have to say that because of the "live" internet broadcast, only to find out later it was taped, doesn't seem to fit with the timing of the "real time" nature of 24. Maybe the scenes of Hassan were early in the episode to allow for the taping and then broadcast, but I would have to see it again to pay attention for that. I am curious as to how the rest of the season will play out since Hassan is dead along with all of the terrorists that we have seen so far.

Devastating.

Warning: Spoilers
After President Hassan has decided to give himself up for the terrorists in order to stop an attack, it's up to President Taylor and CTU to rescue him as fast as they possibly can. Dana Walsh finally gets found out she's working with the terrorists and is given an immunity deal for providing information... but only if Hassan returns alive.

This is not just a standout episode of the season, but one of the finest the series has ever produced. The stakes are raised higher than ever, and even in the slower first half there's not a single moment wasted. It's very satisfying to see Dana get caught in her tangled web of lies. I never liked her character in the first place, but even less so when she turned out to be a traitor. Cole's reaction when he confronts her is absolutely perfect. Any level of sympathy he previously had for her has now vanished completely. Jack also has a great interrogation scene with her where she's playing mindgames with him, which he won't stand for. You can tell he's had a lot of experience dealing with the likes of her before.

The rescue operation is extremely thrilling as well. Everything is a matter of literally minutes, possibly even seconds, so you're sitting there nervously rocking your body in hopes of them being able to get there in time and save Hassan from a humiliating public execution. After a while, it actually looks like they're gonna make it in time, but you get the feeling something is just slightly off. Then as Jack and his team enter the room where Samir reads outloud a speech before the time of execution, they see a computer screen playing a pre-recorded video. Hassan is already dead... The moment of Jack looking him in the eye telling him "I'm sorry." broke me. I could feel myself watering up. We also cut to Taylor finding out the horrible news and looking ready to cry. The sense of complete hopelessness sinks in.

Hassan was the finest and most admirable president on the show since David Palmer. Always showing courage no matter what, with the most admirable and well-meaning of intentions. To see the end of this character is a true tragedy.

The episode finishes with Arlo coming into the interrogation room giving Dana a paper to sign that she accepts she won't be granted immunity now that Hassan is dead. Of course she refuses, but he tells her it doesn't matter anyway since FBI will soon come and put her in front of the committing magistrate. Whether she'll give up or use even more drastic measures, we'll find out...

This is television at its most captivating.

Good!

Warning: Spoilers
8th season of 24 is going good. I openly criticized 6th and 7th seasons because they were horrible and after a point, you couldn't keep up with them. But 8th season is a comeback for this show.

Particularly this episode was one of the classics, till the end of it, I felt all intensity and anxiousness of Bauer, because writers did their job properly. And also, writers do not force us to show who is good or bad. They give you a choice, you can take side of General who tries to capture President Hassan and save Manhattan or you can take side of President Taylor who tries to keep peace negotiations continuing. This is something rare we see in this show.

But actually, I cannot understand that some people keep going harsh on 8th season, okay I admit it, I am bored of nuclear or radiological bombs too. But there is a consistency in this season, no need to mention of individual performances. There is no African terrorists who infiltrate White House. There is no any sign of discrimination towards Muslims or any other group. This season is good and we cannot criticize writers because of the previous seasons.

So, What Now!?

This was fun up to the discovery of Dana as the infiltrator. She turned out to be much more formidable than I thought she was. The fact that she is allowed to make a deal is sort of ridiculous. At that point, we watch Hassan be tortured and abused by the terrorists. He never wavers but it doesn't matter. Now what is the next move for these guys and what can be done about it? Capture?

Disappointed...

Warning: Spoilers
Again no "real time" character in 24. The time gap between the start of the video record and the appearance of the video stream is less than one minute! Compare this to the end of the episode ...

In my opinion it is a very bad try to get the last season running; what's up next ? Does Jack invent a time traveling machine ?

Nevertheless there are thrilling scenes like in every other episode. But it is a "cut" of the story and the audience can guess: Dana Walsh seems to generate more "explosive" background information and story and it will go on and on and on ...

All in all eight seasons are enough and I am tired of watching 24 - time for an end !
