- In What Will Be Here?, five friends send a rocket to space with a collection of recordings on it that document the world's decline, the stories they want to tell, and their efforts in building this rocket to get their message to the stars. They wonder what their world will have become by the time their message is listened to. What will be left of a planet that has destroyed itself? What will be left of the people who lived there? What will become of their stories? What will be here?—Tal
- "What Will Be Here" is a sci-fi audio drama about living on a doomed earth and building things anyway.
Hundreds of years into the future the world is on the total brink of a capitalist collapse as it is run by a multinational conglomerate "Savannah" with a monopoly on everything. While the world above is "thriving" the world below is full of the poverty-stricken who are at the mercy of Savannah. In a world where Savannah controls everything, and undoubtedly has satellites pointing into space, people come together to build a rocket full of pictures, sounds of the world, and recordings of their thoughts, hopes, and memories - showing whoever is out here what the world was "real like"
The team consists of Armani - a brilliant engineer who loves to tell stories, Kei - a mechanic (and mad scientist) who looks more serious than they are, Dane - a physicist who is angry at the world (but is soft around the right people), Suri - Danes sister and the supply guy who sees the world through a creative lens, and finally Jules - the defacto leader of the group and a chemist who wanted to build the rocket in the first place. Over the course of the series, we learn more about the world and the team, and how they interact with and know each other. Each team member has a certain "theme" they talk about when they are recording their sections - and they often interrupt and overlap each other.
We quickly learn that Jules comes from an affluent Savannah family, and while she may have some rose-tinted glasses about the world she grew up in - most of the team is friendly/tolerant of her - save for Suri, who doesn't trust her. Things are progressing mostly on schedule as they gather materials and start to build the rocket - only pausing when the power is out in the underground - an act that is most likely caused by Savannah. Things only get worse from there as in the next episode Savannah does a "safety check" and raids the underground. While the team does manage to conceal the rocket - some of their friends and loved one goes missing and Jules realizes that Savannah really isn't as kind as they were taught it was - and all of their recordings are full of lamenting and mourning. They comfort each other and overcome this as the rocket gets back on track - until Kei finds a tracking device on her car, planted by her parents.
This causes a rift between the team as they realize that the tracking device was why Savannah raided them - thus making it Jules's fault. However, Jules manages to make amends with everyone except for Suri - whose own distrust of her doubles. As the rocket comes closer and closer to completion - the team realizes they need fuel to send it off and after trying and failing a series of ways to get it, they finally settle on stealing it from a Savannah building. However the heist goes sideways right at the end and Jules sacrifices their life so that Suri can escape with the fuel - crushing everyone's heart, but finally allowing Surie to realize that Jules was on their side the whole time. The team takes a moment to mourn, with Dane taking it the worst - before they finally finish the rocket and fire it into space, seeing Jules's dream into fruition.
