Former President Barack Obama Wins Another Emmy, Beating Out Morgan Freeman For Outstanding Narrator
Morgan Freeman might have some fierce competition as former President Barack Obama beat him to the Emmy award for outstanding narrator.
The 44th U.S. president won the award for his voicework in Working: What We Do All Day. In addition to Freeman in Our Universe, Obama was up against Mahershala Ali in Chimp Empire, Angela Bassett in Good Night Oppy and Pedro Pascal in Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World.
Working: What We Do All Day is a docu-series that follows the lives of 12 people working in the home care, tech and hospitality industries. It was inspired by Studs Terkel’s nonfiction book called Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do.

When the 2023 Emmy nominations were announced, Pedro Pascal made history as the first person to instantaneously go from having zero to three TV academy acting notices. His recognized body of work as a star of “The Last of Us,” narrator of “Patagonia” and guest host of “Saturday Night Live” serves as a full display of his talent, with his performance on the NBC sketch series being the strongest showcase of his versatility. If voters feel compelled to honor him somewhere, the choice to support his Best Comedy Guest Actor campaign may be rather simple.
Pascal made his “SNL” hosting debut on February 4, 2023, three weeks after “The Last of Us” first premiered on HBO. The actor kicks off the episode – which features music from Coldplay and a cameo from his friend and colleague, Sarah Paulson – with a monologue focused on his thriving career and then embodies a wide array of characters...

Pedro Pascal is reportedly close to being cast as Mr. Fantastic in Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four film, according to Deadline.
The casting news isn’t official just yet, and still exists in the nebulous realm of “in talks.” But the deal is apparently close to being done, and scheduling just needs to be ironed out as Pascal has a few other major projects on his plate. Those include Season Two of The Last of Us (expected to film next year) and Gladiator 2, which is expected to start by the end of this year.

In “Kin,” three months after watching Henry (Lamar Johnson) and ignoring the advice of locals, Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) receive a grave warning about what lies ahead. They descend deeper into dangerous territory in search of the Fireflies – and Tommy (Gabriel Luna). Later, Ellie learns more about Joel’s past, while Joel tries his best to forget. The episode was written by series creator co-creator Craig Mazin and directed by Jasmila Žbanić.

Last year’s Best Narrator Emmy contest was a real clash of the titans as three-time champion David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) attempted to fend off famously charismatic first-timer Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). Now that the former U.S. president has one victory under his belt, he is immediately seeking a second for another Netflix series, “Working: What We Do All Day.” This time, he faces an entirely different slate of challengers who could very well make this outing even more difficult.
Those competing against Obama for the 2023 narration prize are returning nominees Angela Bassett (“Good Night Oppy”) and Morgan Freeman (“Our Universe”) and category newcomers Mahershala Ali (“Chimp Empire”) and Pedro Pascal (“Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World”). Collectively, the professional actors have previously vied for 14 Emmys across 10 categories.

In 2022, Nathan Lane became the sole record holder for most Best Comedy Guest Actor Emmy nominations (six) and then achieved his very first TV academy honor for his work on “Only Murders in the Building.” Having just earned another bid for the Hulu series, he could soon join six other two-time recipients of this award, including back-to-back champs Jay Thomas (“Murphy Brown”) and Mel Brooks (“Mad About You”). Although his chances are strong, he also faces the unique challenge of having to fend off a fellow former winner.
Seeking a bookend trophy of his own is “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” guest actor Luke Kirby, who was lauded for the same series in 2019. Lane is also involved in an immediate rematch with Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”) and faces fresh opposition from category newcomer Oliver Platt (“The Bear”) and Emmy first-timers Jon Bernthal (“The Bear”) and Pedro Pascal (“Saturday Night Live”).

Pedro Pascal is this year’s Emmy overachiever, receiving three nominations, including one for ‘The Last of Us’ and another as guest host on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ We talk to him about those shows (and “The Mandalorian”) plus how he knows his huge success also comes with the duty to be a bit of a mentor and role model to others, just as he once had. But first, on the Roundtable, Variety’s Marc Malkin joins us for a deep dive into where things stand with the SAG-AFTRA strike, and how it has severely impacted events and so much more. Listen below!

Bill Hader once again topped the list of Emmy nominees who earned multiple bids in a single year when nominations for the 75th annual awards were announced on July 12. Nine individuals earned two or more nominations this year, down from the even dozen who achieved the feat in 2022.
As of this writing, Hader earned three nominations in 2023 for “Barry” for his leading role on the series and for directing and writing the series finale “wow.” When producer credits are finalized for the program categories in the middle of August, Hader will pick up a fourth as executive producer on the final season of the HBO show. The former First Couple are back in Emmy contention.
Ex-President Obama earned a nomination this morning as Outstanding Narrator for his work on the Netflix documentary series Working: What We Do All Day. The 44th president is the defending champion in that category, after winning in 2022 for narrating the Netflix series Our Great National Parks.

This year’s Emmy nominees will highlight a more diverse crop of actors, with Latino performers having a particularly strong showing.
Of course, much of that is thanks to Pedro Pascal, who has become the most-nominated Latino in a single year with three noms. A stellar precursor to the busy fall film festival season, Locarno Film Festival annually premieres some of the year’s most exciting cinema and 2023 looks to be no different. Taking place from August 2-12 in the Swiss town, the festival has now unveiled its lineup for the 76th edition. Highlights include Eduardo Williams’ The Human Surge 3 (brilliantly forgoing a second film), Radu Jude’s Do Not Expect Too Much Of The End Of The World, Lav Diaz’s Essential Truths of the Lake, Sylvain George’s Nuit Obscure – Au Revoir Ici, N’Importe Où, and Quentin Dupieux’s Yannick.
Speaking to its main section, Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, said, “From Quentin Dupieux and his edgy surrealism to Lav Diaz. From the sarcastic humor of Radu Jude to the night poetry of Sylvain Georges. From the mad inventions of Rainer Sarnet to the abstract psychedelia of Eduardo Williams.
