The new documentary Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union begins by transporting viewers back to Philadelphia’s Constitution Center in 2008, when the future 44th president of the United States confronted America’s concurrent issues with race head-on. Over the course of a 37-minute speech (to which the film’s title refers), then-candidate Barack Obama offered an explanation for controversial remarks made by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, analyzed how race had played a role in his presidential campaign and expressed his resolve that “working together, we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and… in fact we ...

Former President Barack Obama has scaled back plans for what was to be a 60th birthday bash at Martha’s Vineyard this weekend due to the rise in coronavirus cases.
“This outdoor event was planned months ago in accordance with all public health guidelines and with covid safeguards in place,” Hannah Hankins, a spokesperson for the Obamas, said in a statement to media outlets. “Due to the new spread of the delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends. President Obama is appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon.”
Obama’s birthday is actually today, but the event was to be held at the former First Family’s estate on the island, with reports that such celebrities like Steven Spielberg would attend along...

Documentary filmmaker Peter Kunhardt began working on HBO’s “Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union” in 2014, while the former president was still in the White House. The director-exec producer and Jelani Cobb, a writer for the New Yorker and exec producer on this three-part docuseries, spent four years researching and discovering rare and never-before-seen archival footage of Obama before filming commenced in 2018. Kunhardt conducted 39 interviews with a wide range of people including Cobb, late Congressman John Lewis, Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod, Rev. Al Sharpton as well as Rev. Jeremiah Wright during the course of production.
The diverse voices allowed Kunhardt, who previously directed “John McCain: From Whom the Bell Tolls” for HBO, to examine and critique the former president’s personal and political journey, as well as the United States’ fraught racial history. The goal: to look at Obama “through a critical eye, but not get bogged down...

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

In a world of shoddy rhetoric and bad faith arguments, few observations are shoddier and made in worse faith than the one that says the election of Barack Obama as 44th president of the United States marked the end of America’s legacy of systemic racism or proved that such systemic racism either never existed or existed only in the distant past. It’s an argument that pundits and politicians whip out as “proof” that reparations are unnecessary or that critical race theory is evil.
It’s an argument that’s systemically (see what I did there?) but inefficiently eviscerated ...
