Season One Review
southdavid14 December 2021
I'm going to frame this review as being for the first season. At the time of writing no second season is confirmed, but the strong notices and open premise could well lead to another. (if it doesn't, I'll add this review to the main page later on). Though perhaps not quite as funny as I'd hoped, I enjoyed the show overall.

Several years into their relationship, Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) and Melissa (Cecily Strong) get lost on a couples excursion and stumble into Schmigadoon, a town which resembles small town America from a hundred years previously and, even more strangely, one whose inhabitants act as if they're in a classic musical. As the residents sing and dance their feelings, Josh and Melissa decide to leave, but discover they are trapped in the town, unless they cross the bridge with their true love. Their inability to leave together has them questioning whether their relationship is right for them.

As I say, there was lots to admire about the show. The songs are very good and perfectly ape the musicals that they affectionately parody. There are some great performers from stage and screen drafted in, whether it's for a meaty role, such as Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth or Dove Cameron, or to steal a single episode like Jane Krakowski. But all of the cast (with perhaps the exception of Keegan-Michael Key (but that suits the role)) are capable songsters.

Though it was funny, my only criticism is that perhaps it's not quite funny enough. Key's character would have been a good way to skewer some of the tropes a bit more. It's a very sweet and good-natured show though, as seems to be the preference with Apple's comedy output. I can easily see another season, perhaps with another couple coming to the town, or the same premise in another location, maybe a district of an unnamed city doing a "Chicago", "Guys and Dolls", "West Side Story" lampoon. I'd certainly be back for it.

Started Off Slow but Ended Strong
fvgfrn13 August 2021
This episode started off extremely slow and didn't start to get better until half way through the episode. This is why I can't give the episode any more than 7 stars. A good episode hooks you in from the beginning and this just didn't.

No need for a 2nd season

What an ending for this show. Was just great but I think the story has been told and we don't need a second season because the first one was perfect as it is.

Not As Crisp

Warning: Spoilers
As is the case with the musicals it parodies, this ends with some contrived pieces. The couple shows up just as the townsfolk are about to railroad their mayor (who has announced earlier he is a homosexual--his words). They have a moment in front of the assembled voters and before long all kinds of people are admitting their previous dishonesty. The fireman admits to having set a fire. The poor guy who keeps getting shot at, hit with rocks, and other projectiles admits he likes the attention. The truth comes out about the schoolteacher little boy. The big one is that the pregnant girl in the previous episode is the daughter of Kristen's character. Of course, the couple get together as they should. The show ends with them climbing the bridge.

Third Act re-write out of town please.
gkimmarygleim13 August 2021
Schmigadoon started out so strong, then something happened. They developed a great set of characters and everyone got a chance to shine. Then something happened. Obviously, being a musical, we knew in the end Josh and Melissa would end up together and cross the bridge back to reality. But it feels like the writers ran out of ideas and then time. The last several songs were weak compared to the first half of the show. What song would an audience sing, or hum, leaving the theater? A missed chance to end with a bang.

It's never how you start, but how you finish!

Schmigadoon got better and better as the episodes unfolded but there's never really any closure for its characters and the finale was a disappointment. On the flip side, some of the musical numbers were GREAT throughout harking back to the days of Hammerstein and Sondheim. Do we suppose that Melissa and Josh ever cross the bridge back into modern-day NY or that Mildred will ever really change her ways? Hopefully, there's a 2nd season but it's up to Apple tv+ come 2022!

Flat ending to an otherwise solid series
eblrobinson15 August 2021
This really felt like a rush to the end, with lots of things built up over several episodes just tossed out at the end. Could have really done with maybe two more episodes to end properly.

Last episode fell flat
kagg-5682214 August 2021
For me this episode fell flat. Like a huge thud. Loved when Josh sang but wasn't overcome. It was awkward and pitchy. The finale was too slow and contrived. The whole show was wonderful and funny but the finale has left a bad taste. Totally bummed.
