Alex Trebek’s final episode of “Jeopardy!”, which airs this evening, will conclude with a moving tribute to the legendary game-show host, who died on Nov. 8.
The minute-and-a-half-long package includes clips from his earliest days on the “Jeopardy!” stage 37 years ago through the mustache-less modern era, showing Trebek at his most charming and playful — dressed up as Kiss’ Gene Simmons and the Statue of Liberty, and good-naturedly conversing with contestants.
The tribute ends with a dedication to Trebek, “Forever in our Hearts, Always our Inspiration.”
Watch the whole video below:
Trebek’s final episodes this week began with him calling on viewers to “build a kinder, gentler society.” And as Variety TV critic Daniel D’Addario put it, “the public mourning of Trebek wasn’t solely about missing a familiar presence, or honoring a person suffering with dignity and stoicism in the public eye. In a media landscape that lately rewards attention-seeking,...

The streaming services continue their ceaseless rollout of new content, and several fresh titles are debuting this weekend.
First up, arriving on HBO Max is The King of Staten Island, a semi-autobiographical comedy drama partly inspired by the life of its star, comedian and SNL alum Pete Davidson. A waster high school dropout still living with his mother dreams of becoming a tattoo artist, but is stifled by his medical and mental health issues, which are only compounded when his mom begins dating a new man who’s a firefighter like his deceased father.
Also on HBO Max is season 2 of The Alienist, subtitled Angel of Darkness after the novel on which it’s based, seeing the return of its ad hoc team of investigators, this time looking into the brutal deaths of young children that may be the work of a serial killer, while digging into familiar themes of societal status,...

Alex Trebek’s final week of episodes as host of “Jeopardy!” — which conclude with the episode airing January 8 — have been striking in part for how much Trebek is committed to performing the show’s business as usual.
There have been asides, through the week of shows that were the last he taped before his death on November 8, 2020, that indicate Trebek was thinking along more cosmic lines as he taped these episodes. When the week began, he opened the show by urging viewers to “build a gentler, kinder society” and extend charity to those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic; on his penultimate episode, he mused that despite many changes in society, “‘Jeopardy!’ remains the same.” The brief, biographical contestant chats were notably absent the sort of occasionally-biting sarcasm Trebek could at times deploy. And throughout, Trebek’s voice was just-perceptibly hoarser than it had been in years past.
But in the main,...

ABC’s series debut of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune topped the ratings Thursday in primetime with a 1.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 7.83 million viewers, pacing a night that saw a slew of debuts across the Big 4 as they continue to roll out their new season fare. That list included series premieres for NBC’s Ted Danson-starring comedy Mr. Mayor and ABC’s game show The Chase along with the Season 19 premiere of Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen and the Season 9 debut of Fox’s Last Man Standing.
ABC won the night overall in both the demo and viewers, following Wheel with The Chase, the new British import featuring Jeopardy! GOATs James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter and hosted by The View‘s Sara Haines. That lead into Week 2 of The Hustler, which grew two tenths from its post-Bachelor preview Monday.

The NBC comedy “Mr. Mayor” got a good start in the overnight ratings in its Thursday night debut.
The series, which hails from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and stars Ted Danson, aired episodes at both 8 p.m. and 8:30. The first episode drew a 0.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.9 million viewers, while the second drew a 0.5 and 4.3 million viewers.
The ratings for the first episode represent NBC’s best comedy premiere in the key demo since 2018 and its best comedy premiere in total viewers since 2017.
Later on NBC, a new episode of “Law & Order: Svu” drew a 0.6 and 3.8 million viewers
Elsewhere on Thursday night, ABC debuted the primetime game show “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.” That show drew a 1.1 rating and 7.8 million viewers across the 8 p.m. hour. Another new ABC game show, “The Chase,” opened to a 0.9 rating and 6.2 million viewers at 9. That was followed by a new...

The prognosis is not good for Call Me Kat.
The Mayim Bialik-fronted comedy launched in its regular slot on Thursday, and it did so with considerably fewer viewers.
It delivered 3.2 million total viewers and a 0.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demo.
This is down 43% in total viewers and 56% in the demo vs. its series debut.
Granted, the premiere benefited from a football overrun.
Last Man Standing (3.3 million/0.5 rating) followed with a big surge in total viewers, but steady in the demo for its Home Improvement crossover.
Earlier on NBC's night, Hell's Kitchen returned to 2.7 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo.
Over on NBC, the series debut of Mr. Mayor did 4.7 million viewers and a 0.6 rating.
A big return on Svu followed with 3.8 million viewers and a 0.6 rating.
ABC's decision to postpone the returns of its scripted shows on the night appears to have paid off.

Three new series debuted on broadcast TV last night — that is, so long as you count “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” as a new show. The best of the bunch, ratings-wise, was “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” which led into “The Chase.” Both ABC game shows left Ted Danson’s “Mr. Mayor” in the dust. The “Mr. Mayor” start was not a disaster, though — Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s new sitcom was NBC’s top comedy launch in terms of total viewers since 2017. It’s likely “Mr. Mayor” will be more competition for the ABC game shows — and and possibly surpass them — when delayed viewing is tallied. ABC won Thursday’s primetime outright. Fox was second in the key demo and NBC finished third. All of that said, CBS (essentially) aired only reruns last night and ended up in a ratings tie among adults 18-49 with Spanish-language broadcast network Univision. Fox’s new Mayim Bialik sitcom,...

Brad Rutter may be one of the greatest “Jeopardy!” contestants of all time, but the quiz show maven also has plenty of experience in broadcasting — dating as far back as the original 2012 pilot for “The Chase,” the U.K. quiz show import he’s starring on again nine years later.
“So it’s more than just the money that ‘Jeopardy’s’ given me,” Rutter said with a laugh in an interview with TheWrap.
Set to premiere on ABC Thursday night, “The Chase” is a game show which pits trivia fans against pros. Rutter will star as one of the so-called “Chasers” looking to crush contestants’ hopes and dreams alongside fellow “Jeopardy!” G.O.A.T.s Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer. “The View’s” Sara Haines serves as host.

In ABC’s new game show “The Chase” — the latest American adaptation of a U.K. format, hosted by ‘The View” co-host Sara Haines — the trivia master that contestants face off against is described as a “ruthless quiz genius determined to stop contestants from winning cash prizes.”
Here, that role is held by three of the most well-known trivia buffs on U.S. shores — Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer, and Brad Rutter — thanks to their years of mastery of “Jeopardy!” and their participation in last year’s “Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time” tournament that proved to be a ratings giant.

2020 was a big year for trivia. Starting in January with Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time tournament, continuing with AMC’s excellent Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? scandal miniseries Quiz, and concluding with an impassioned response to the tragic passing of Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, this was a year that highlighted Western society’s fascination with competitive knowledge-sharing. And at the center of much of it, as he often seems to be, was Brad Rutter.
If there ever was a trivia competition Hall-of-Famer, it’s Rutter. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania-born former Quiz Bowler has been a staple of competitive trivia for years. Rutter has had one of the most impressive Jeopardy! careers of all time having been a five-time champion (the show used to cap contestants at five wins), winner of the 2001 Tournament of Champions, the Million Dollar Masters, the Ultimate Tournament of Champions, the Battle of the Decades Tournament,...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

U.K. commercial broadcaster ITV has furloughed 800 staff, comprising around 15% of its local workforce.
The majority of the furloughs are staff at production arm ITV Studios, which has taken a major commercial hit during the Covid-19 pandemic, losing around 80% of its business. The business has said it is “taking part in other schemes where appropriate” internationally, and has also instated a recruitment and salary freeze.
Since mid-March, ITV Studios has suspended most of its global productions as a result of the pandemic. The shutdown has resulted in a “significant impact on the demand for advertising across most advertising categories,” and in April, ads were down 42%, said ITV. Between January and April, advertising dipped by 9%.
Carolyn McCall, chief executive at ITV, said: “ITV has taken swift and decisive action to manage and mitigate the impact of Covid-19, by focusing on our people and their safety, and by continuing to reduce costs...

ITV has revealed that it has furloughed roughly 15% of its UK workforce as it bids to cut costs amid the coronavirus crisis that has shut down the majority of its productions and ravaged advertising revenue.
In a trading update on Wednesday, the UK’s biggest free-to-air commercial broadcaster said 800 staff have been placed on the government’s job retention scheme, the majority of whom work in production arm ITV Studios. More staff are being furloughed in other territories, it added.
The company said its total external revenue dropped 7% to £694M ($872M) in the first three months of the year, with ITV Studios’ turnover falling 11% to £342M and advertising income down 2% to £426M.
But worse looks yet to come. ITV said its ad revenue plummeted 42% in April at the height of the pandemic, which mirrors the declines seen at its rival Channel 4. This was despite its main network’s share...

Incoming Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker has been pictured filming a nighttime scene with her new companion, Graham (The Chase‘s Bradley Walsh).
Said to be completely unrelated to next month’s Christmas Special, which will herald our first true look at Whittaker in action, the prying eyes of the Daily Mail managed to snap these photos in some unspecified wooded area, as the Doctor and Graham infiltrate an industrial factory.
It’s impossible to gauge the context of this scene based on a horde of unofficial set photos, but the Daily Mail’s report does suggest that a stand-in for the Tardis was just out of shot, which would explain why Whittaker’s protagonist is clutching on to an Asian (Japanese?) bag. Graham is also equipped with a pair of wire-cutters, so perhaps our dynamic duo are about to embark on a top-secret mission come 2018?
Your guess is as good as ours,...

As Doctor Who series 11 adds a trio of soap opera stars to its cast. And it makes sense...
What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.
Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.
We won't go so far as Doctor Who...

It’s 5pm on a weekday. Freelancers like myself and other fine rarely-leaving-the-house folk gather around their TVs, enthusiastically anticipating an hour of top-quality quiz competitiveness with a sprinkling of strangeness and – with any luck - a dash of scandalous sourness. Hours of dedicated Take Me Out viewing means we love Paddy McGuinness, so when we found out that he had a new Channel 4 gameshow, we had to pop to Manchester to watch him filming.
Benchmark sees a contestant trying to guess the numerical answer to a question - with a group of other contestants setting the benchmark by guessing as well. But with questions about biscuits and members of the public involved - plus a seriously tense final round - it's a fun teatime watch. Here's what Paddy told us about it all...

I am a game show zealot. I believe in the umber glow of Chuck Woolery and the sneering capabilities of Paul Lynde. I'm also a rabid fan of trivia; I was on "Jeopardy!" a couple weeks ago and Gsn's "The Chase" before that. Every time network TV rolls out a new primetime trivia-based game show, I'm listening and hopeful and there -- and I have three spring-loaded requests: 1) Please, Jesus, anything but more "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"-type lighting; 2) Good lord, no more multiple choice questions; 3) Make me love you, new show. I want to love you. Embrace me, you child. Last year we got the Ryan Seacrest-hosted "Million Second Quiz," a multiple-choice bonanza with "Millionaire" lighting that was tedious and unchallenging (read: not lovable). You can understand my devastation there. "500 Questions" is this year's new primetime trivia attempt. Hosted by CNN journalist Richard Quest, "500 Questions" airs...

Bradley Walsh has revealed why he traded ITV's Law & Order: UK for new BBC One series Sun Trap.
Walsh appears opposite Kayvan Novak in the comedy about two ex-journalists and their antics in Spain.
The actor and TV host told press including Digital Spy that it had become "tricky" to fit Law & Order: UK into his increasingly busy schedule.
"You have to set aside so much time for drama," he explained. "Law & Order was a 6-month shoot, so everything [else] has to be crammed into the rest of the year."
Walsh also fronts ITV's quiz The Chase and game show Keep It in the Family.
"This particular shoot for Sun Trap is round about 8 weeks maximum - 2 months - so that's Ok, that's manageable," he explained. "If I do The Chase or Keep It in the Family or whatever I'm doing - then all of a sudden I can go be a character for 2 months,...

Here at Digital Spy, we love a game show. And we love Richard Osman. So when we got a call asking if we'd like to take part in a journalists' edition of Richard Osman's game show Two Tribes, how could we resist?
If you missed the first series of Two Tribes, here's how it works: the contestants fill out a questionnaire beforehand, and then in each round they're split into two tribes depending on whether they answered "yes" or "no" to a particular question. Then the tribes battle it out to stay in the competition.
That all sounds simple enough, but then we got sent the questionnaire, about a week before we went on set. And let us tell you, there is nothing simple about this questionnaire (which is pretty long - we were advised that it might take half an hour to complete, so they aren't messing around...

Richard Osman has revealed plans for a live Pointless tour.
The producer and co-presenter of the BBC One quiz said that the show would involve celebrities and audience members if it were to go ahead.
Osman wrote on Twitter: "Just had a meeting about doing a live Pointless tour, celebs and audience members playing."
Meanwhile, The Chase star Mark Labbett chipped in with: "I am up for that if you'll let me," to which Osman replied: "You're in!"
It is not the first time that Osman has teased fans about the possibility of live shows.
In November, it was confirmed that Pointless had been renewed by the BBC for a further 110 episodes this year.
Meanwhile, the upcoming run will also include 38 episodes of Pointless Celebrities.
Alexander Armstrong presents the show with Osman, which airs on weekdays on 5.15pm on BBC One.

Bradley Walsh has insisted that viewers haven't seen the last of Law & Order: UK.
ITV announced earlier this year that it would be "resting" the crime drama, which starred Walsh as DS Ronnie Brooks.
"It's not the end of Law & Order - it hasn't been decommissioned," Walsh told Digital Spy. "I just wanted a rest.
"It's a seven-month shoot and that just doesn't leave me any time to do anything else."
However, Walsh confirmed that he is keen to continue with his acting work, in addition to hosting ITV's The Chase and Keep It in the Family.
"I'm making a new show for the BBC - that's an eight-week shoot, a comedy drama with Kayvan Novak," he said. "So yeah, I'll always carry on doing the acting."
Keep It in the Family starts Sunday, October 26 at 7pm on ITV.

Bradley Walsh has insisted that he has no plans to quit The Chase.
Earlier this year, Paul Sinha - one of the show's professional quizzers - claimed that the daytime hit wouldn't survive without its current host.
Walsh - who will soon host new ITV game show Keep It in the Family - told Digital Spy that his other commitments will not impact on The Chase.

Keep It in the Family features three generations of rival families going head-to-head for prizes - but the twist is that the kids are the ones in charge, deciding which family member plays each game and which prizes they compete for.

Next week will see the explosive return of Todd Grimshaw to the Coronation Street cobbles as Bruno Langley returns to the soap after a near-decade absence.
The openly-gay character will cause frictions with residents of the street, with more than a few regulars less than happy to see his face again.
In scenes that are bound to shock, Jason will be stunned by the return of his errant brother, while feathers will be ruffled as Todd makes advances on Maria Connor’s bisexual boyfriend Marcus Dent.
Todd, who was last seen in the soap back in 2004, announced his return to the ITV 1 show back in June, with his comeback scenes to air on 4 November.
For long-term fans of the TV series, the return of Todd will bring back some old memories and a healthy dose of nostalgia, and it’s got us thinking who else we’d like to see return to Coronation Street.

Based on the UK show, The Chase is not set to premiere until August 6, but today Gsn said it has ordered another eight episodes for Season 2 to air later this year. Production begins next month. The network announced an eight-episode first-season order for the quiz competition in May during the upfronts. The one-hour show, in which three contestants battle against an all-knowing opponent named The Beast, is produced by ITV Studios America. Brooke Burns is host. “The high stakes of this ‘all or nothing,’ ‘David vs. Goliath’ battle of the brains result in riveting television,” said Amy Introcaso-Davis, Evp Programming and Development at Gsn. “While there is great gameplay in The Chase, it is also wildly entertaining to watch the always engaging Brooke Burns spar with trivia savant Mark Labbett aka The Beast”. Bob Boden, Martin Scott and Michael Kelpie are executive producers.

The Gsn original series The Chase is a one-hour quiz show show adapted from the British original that pits a team of four contestants against a resident genius — in this case Mark Labbett, one of the original “Chasers” in the UK version. The network has set the premiere date for August 6 at 9 Pm. Brooke Burns will host the series, from ITV Studios America and executive producer Bob Boden. Its lead-in will be the Apolo Anton Ohno-hosted Minute To Win It.

Are you familiar with the British quiz show called The Chase? Well, this speedy knowledge fest is about to become more familiar. Gsn has picked up an American incarnation of the game show to also be called The Chase and Brooke Burns has been chosen as host. Burns is a former Baywatch babe. The blue-eyed beauty acted as Vanessa Mancini on Melrose Place and has hosted programs like Dog Eat Dog and You Deserve It. You may also recognize Burns from the Nickelback music video for “Trying Not To Love You”.
The Chase puts a team of four contestants up against the show’s “resident genius” and is very fast paced. In the British version, Bradley Walsh served as host and the game show ran for 6 seasons. The UK’s resident geniuses numbered 4 throughout the seasons and they were a collection of winners from various other quiz shows. This leads...
