The British Horror Film Festival, now in its second year, took place in London and Bournemouth over October 14th and 15th 2011, boasting a line-up of new home-grown genre fare. As well as the three films covered below, the festival opened with the premier of vampire thriller “The Reverend”, directed by Neil Jones (best known for boxing bio “Risen”) and starring Rutger Hauer, Tamer Hassan and Pinhead himself, Doug Bradley, and also included horror comedy “Kill Keith” and a showcase of short films. The Holding “The Holding” might seem somewhat of an odd choice for a festival designed around showing off genre talent, given that it’s not really a horror film at all, but a tightly wound rural suspense thriller with a few touches of murder and madness thrown in. Marking the feature debut of director Susan Jacobson, the film stars Kierston Wareing (recently in “Fish Tank” and “Basement”) as its chief woman in peril,...

So, you’ve seen the news story – reported here in The Guardian yesterday – of Tom Hanks giving the cost of the cinema ticket back to two people who didn’t like his film Larry Crowne, that bombed at the box office this summer. Is that a dangerous precedent or the way forward for consumers?
I haven’t seen Larry Crowne because it didn’t play at my local flea-pit. It’s not 3D, you see, so doesn’t appeal to the mouth-breathers who frequent our shining diadem in the local entertainment crown. No wizards, no explosions, no interest. But, you know what, I did pay good hard-earned money to go see Harry Potter 7½ which was in 3D and consequently the picture was so gloomy I may as well have been listening to a radio play. That’s £7.50 I’ll never see again.
So, y’know, I think the Warner Brothers owe me some cash.

Okay, so this week we have covered the "Top Five Indie Horror Films," with an article found here: Best Indie Horror Films of 2010. Also covered was the "Top Five International Horror Films." An article on this posting is here: Top Five International Films. But, now we are exploring a more depraved side of horror, or a lower class of film. This top five list will cover the "Worst Five Horror Films of 2010!"
This year, there was so much to choose from in poor horror films. Abroad, we have the dismal Basement starring Danny Dyer and Jimi Mistry to the absolutely monstrosity of a film from Australia called Outback aka Prey starring the incapable Natalie Bassingthwaighte. Domestically, films like the Zombie Chronicles: The Infected made this reviewer want to scratch his eyes out, while others like Apocalypse of the Dead aka Zone of the Dead made one reach for the off button with lightening like reflexes.

Each year horror sites, newspapers, magazines and other forms of media like to compile these silly "Best of," or "Worst of" lists. Here at 28Dla, we like to follow the crowds, but in a different way. This year's lists will consist of various categories including "Top Five Indie Horror Films," "Top Five Major Horror Release," "Top Five Foreign Horror," "Worst Horror Films of 2010," and "Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2011." These lists will be a little more focused. So, let us start with this first list titled "Top Five Indie Horror Films."
Now, this is a year where close to fifty independent films were reviewed on this site. There was the pain of Danny Dyer's Basement from Revolver Entertainment to highlights like Die-Ner, Get It? and the over-the-top and disturbing Harpoon: Whale Watching Massacre. This list will give you the "Best of" in this competitive genre, as this reviewer has seen the gamut.

Basement UK ArtDirector: Asham Kamboj.
Writer: Ewen Glass.
After watching director Asham Kamboj's Basement, this reviewer now knows what medieval times were like, when subjects would protest the king. The iron maiden or the rack would almost be a better alternative to watching this seventy-six minute film drone on about nothing in particular. Yet, the show must go on.
Paperknife Productions is the creator behind Basement and this is their only production. If they were relying on this film for profits, then this newly created cynic can see bankruptcy in this company's future. Revolver Entertainment UK, which is known for better film fare like Dead Man Running, Jcvd and the upcoming Iron Sky made a misstep here, by distributing this truly farcical cinema. This film launched in the UK August 23rd on DVD and Blu-Ray, after a brief showing in theatres August 20th. Much like an unfinished basement, this...

Given the seemingly never ending popularity of the Brit gangster film, it was always inevitable that sooner or later someone would take the next logical step and combine it with the horror genre. “Dead Cert” does just that, following in the footsteps of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriquez’s classic “Dusk Till Dawn” by throwing vampires into the mix. Directed by Steve Lawson (“Just For The Record”), the film comes with a cast list that reads like a who’s who of Brit genre talent, including Craig Fairbrass (“Rise Of The Footsoldier”), Billy Murray (“Essex Boys”), Dexter Fletcher (“Kick-Ass”), Steven Berkoff (“44 Inch Chest”), Dave Legeno (“Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince”), top character actor Jason Flemying (“Clash Of The Titans”) and even a bonus in the form of a cameo, from the one and only Danny Dyer (“Basement”). The film now arrives on DVD via Momentum Pictures, coming complete with...

Danny Dyer has become the byword for low-budget, no-quality Brit-trash cinema, but beneath the cockney swagger there's a decent actor struggling to get out. Stuart Heritage comes to the rescue
Last Tuesday saw the premiere of a new Danny Dyer film, Basement (the Daily Mail reported that the most glamorous guest at the event was someone who came third on Big Brother in 2006). Admittedly a new Dyer film is not really news, given that he knocks them out with such exhausting frequency that he makes Nicolas Cage look like Jd Salinger. In fact, he's got another one, The Last Seven, coming out next week. By the end of the year, Dyer will have starred in 20 films since 2004, with enough spare time to squeeze in 11 TV shows, two plays, a Grand Theft Auto game, countless radio commercials for everything from UKTV Gold to Exchange & Mart, his online store (where you can...

Brit actor Danny Dyer is certainly adding the genre credits to his resume of late. After previously starring in 'Severance', 'Doghouse' and 'Dead Cert' in the past few years he's now already signed on to zombie apocalypse movie 'Devil's Playground', immortality horror 'The Asphyx' and now of course Asham Kamboj's 'Basement'. The movie is set to hit UK theatres on 20 August and just 3 days later on DVD (don't forget to enter our giveaway!). And now finally a trailer and an extended plot synopsis has hit the web-ways. You can check it all out below. Dyer stars alongside Jimi Mistry, Emily Beecham (below), Kierston Wareing, Lois Winstone and Christopher Ellison. Further to our post last week, a first trailer has arrived for Danny Dyer starring Brit horror Basement. So far it seems to be following the standard, by the numbers “locked in the dark with something narsty lurking” premise, but we’ll stick with it to see if it brings something new to the table. Basement is released on August 20th. I’m a sucker for movies that involve a group of young, good-looking individuals who must fight to stay alive inside a series of ominous tunnels located several feet beneath the earth’s surface. And while Asham Kamboj’s upcoming horror outing “Basement” sounds a lot like Nick Hamm’s underrated thriller “The Hole” — minus Keira Knightley’s naughty bits, of course — it seems to be taking this painfully familiar premise in an entirely different direction. Whether or not that’s for the better remains to be seen. Here’s what the picture’s all about: Returning from an anti-war demo, the chaos of horror ensues when stoner Gary, quiet and insular Sarah, vain Saffron, posh Pru, and Pru’s arrogant boyfriend Derek stop in the country. When Derek and the flirtatious Saffron find an unexplained metal hatch in the middle of the forest, curiosity wins and they decide to explore inside.

You would think that with "Lost" mania still a big part of pop culture (despite its lukewarm finale), people who run into a mysterious hatch popping out of the ground in the middle of nowhere would just turn around and leave it alone. But hey ... then we wouldn't have a horror movie now, would we?

Asham Kamboj's UK thriller Basement has nabbed headlines here on Shock in the past. The film finds five diverse people who inadvertently wander into an underground base and are pushed through a nightmarish scenario. Through a series of flashbacks we get clues and hints to why they are there and we realize that all have an important connection to each other and the place. But they soon learn that this situation is far bigger than them alone; it affects us all. An official site has gone live right here with poster art, a full photo gallery and more.
