This is the first TV series produced by Gerry Anderson--the same guy who later brought the "Thunderbirds", "UFO" and "Space: 1999" to television. While I could understand the appeal of the last two sci-fi shows, Anderson's earlier work involved puppets! Today, these shows seem very quaint (a nice way to say they suck). "Torchy, the Battery Boy" is one of these puppet shows.
This first episode is about the creation of the Torchy character--a weirdo robot with a flashlight sticking out of his head (huh?!). This robot helps a Geppetto-like old guy who builds him for companionship and to help him look for his lost dog, Pom-Pom as well as some toys some really stupid and nasty kids lost--and they blamed HIM for this. What jerks. Overall, a really lame episode and one that made me cringe because it was so saccharine and silly.
The first episode of the series is posted for free download at archive.org--and I sincerely doubt if I'll look to see if the rest of the series is available as well. Once is enough.
