Following the massive success of “Dune: Part Two,” director Denis Villeneuve may have found his next project.
The filmmaker is in discussion to reunite with Legendary for an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Pulitzer Prize finalist “Nuclear War: A Scenario,” Variety has confirmed. Legendary also confirmed that it is working with Villeneuve to develop a third “Dune” film.
Legendary optioned the feature film rights to Jacobsen’s nonfiction book; Villeneuve is currently in talks with the studio to produce, adapt and/or director. His producing partner Tanya Lapointe would also be a part of the project.
Released on March 26, Jacobsen’s book “explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made.

Aliens are hot right now – don’t miss Hulu’s No One Will Save You, for starters! – and writers David Matalon (Totally Killer) and Matthew Altman (Feed the Devil) just sold their own take on the sub-genre. Deadline reports today that The Hideaway Entertainment has acquired the rights to a “high concept” spec script from the duo, which is titled Level Up.
The project is being described as “a sci-fi action comedy.”
Deadline details, “Level Up is about a man who wakes up bound and blindfolded in a top-secret facility deep beneath Area 51, soon discovering that he has amazing but inexplicable new abilities. His only hope to escape is the alien he’s imprisoned with… and she hates humans.
“But as they navigate their way out, their unconventional alliance becomes the key to saving the world from an impending global catastrophe.”

The cinematography for “Mank,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “News of the World” and “Cherry” has been nominated as the best film work of 2020 by the American Society of Cinematographers, the Asc announced on Wednesday.
The first four of those films were expected to be recognized by the Asc and are thought to be strong contenders for the Oscar for Best Cinematography, but “Cherry” came as a surprise. The Russo brothers film came out in February to withering reviews and had not been considered an awards contender until the Asc included its cinematographer, Newton Thomas Sigel, in its list of nominees.
“Cherry” landed that nomination over a group of films that included “Tenet,” “Minari,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” — and “Da 5 Bloods,” a more high-profile film that was also shot by Sigel.

The first annual Area 51 Alienstock is now officially in the books. The gates have been stormed, the government has buckled, and every last alien has been freed. Fine, if you want to get technical, the only thing that’s true from what we just mentioned is the gate storming, and the only person to successfully do that? A 60-year-old woman from California. And it’s highly doubtful that she Naruto ran.
For those unfamiliar with the whole thing, the Storm Area 51 raid started as a joke on Facebook but soon ballooned into a 2 million strong attendee event. It fizzled out in the end, however, with only a few thousand people showing up. Among them were a mere 100 raiders, and the only person to get arrested was the aforementioned, yet-unidentified woman in her 60s.
Earlier last week, before things kicked off, two men had been arrested for trespassing as well...

If you're on Facebook, chances are that you may have heard of the notorious "Storm Area 51" event, to which millions of users have now RSVP'd. The out-of-this-world ordeal started off as a joke after college student Matty Roberts watched Joe Rogan's podcast episode featuring Area 51 whistle-blower Bob Lazar, the subject of a recent documentary on Netflix titled Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers. The meme caught the Air Force's attention and brought Lazar and the film about his UFO experience back into the public radar. If you're wondering how this new documentary on Netflix ties into the event, read on to catch up with the recent alien invasion on your feed.
Here's a little bit of about Lazar's backstory. Most of us know Area 51, located in the Nevada Test and Training Range, to be a highly classified government facility shrouded in secret. Suspicions about this region originate from Lazar,...

The man behind Facebook’s “Storm Area 51” page has come forward, calling it “kind of a joke,” but expressing fears that government agents would come knocking on his door.
Matty Roberts spoke to Nevada’s Klas-tv via video call on Wednesday and expressed shock at how his humor has turned into a viral sensation.

What started out as a (hopefully) gag Facebook event has turned into one of the hottest, most dangerous, and most bizarre stories on the internet. According to the original page, the number of people who plan on storming Area 51 – the long-suspected location of government alien research – later this year has now reached over 1.7 million.
In the short amount of time since the story’s surfaced, social media’s been set on fire, and according to The Washington Post, many of the hotels surrounding the Nevada town have already been booked. While it’s alarming that there’s at least a tiny percentage of people who take this call to action seriously, there’ve been some interesting developments popping up on the internet. And the latest comes in the form of a strange request.

As popular as the actress is, Scarlett Johansson has been something of an easy target for jokes on social media for the past couple of years due to her controversial decisions to take on a Japanese character in Ghost in the Shell and a trans role in the aborted Rub & Tug biopic. Yesterday, some new comments from the star were released in which she stated her belief that “as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal.”
Unfortunately, this quote didn’t go down well online, to say the least, as many felt Johansson’s words made light of the need for greater diversity in Hollywood by comparing minorities to trees. Fun and games on Facebook may have serious consequences for the foolish. That was the message delivered by the Us Air Force, who have responded to a Facebook’s group’s efforts to have 450,000 people storm a top secret military base.

The man whose claims of working on alien technology near Area 51 made the base famous is the subject of a new documentary.
In 1989, an anonymous witness talked to Klas Las Vegas about his alleged work engineering alien spacecraft at a secret underground location just south of Area 51. The story about the witness’ claims went global and made Area 51 famous, even though at the time the existence of Area 51 was being denied by the U.S Government. Recall the sensation the 'found footage' thriller "Paranormal Activity" created in 2009, with many believing the film was the best original horror film in years and director Oren Peli hailed as a major new voice in the sub-genre:
But in the six years following the release of the original "Paranormal Activity," Peli avoided directing and instead focused on producing a number of similar projects - until 2015, when he released "Area 51" to little fanfare, receiving mediocre reviews and, according to Box Office Mojo, earned less than $10,000 domestic at the box office (?!) A shocking low for the encore of a director perceived as an innovator less than a decade ago.
But now the film is available on Netflix, getting another shot with a wide audience.
The idea of 'Area 51' as a secret government establishment related to a crashed alien spacecraft has become cliché over time, even though 'alien conspiracy'...

There is arguably nobody who knows and understands found-footage horror movies better than producer Jason Blum, who has been involved with more hits in the last few years than most in Hollywood manage in a lifetime. Blum doesn't exclusively make found-footage movies (he also produced Oscar winner Whiplash), but he's certainly fond of them considering he produced Paranormal Activity, The Bay, Creep, Mockingbird, Area 51, and Unfriended, just to name a few. Blum's latest movie...

Although it seems they are synonymous with found-footage horror, low budget movies that will still be financial successes if audiences stop turning out in droves to see them, Blumhouse Productions are arguably something far more interesting. Their prolific output can easily be read as an updating of Roger Corman’s low budget exploitation aesthetic for the 21st century, albeit one that reflects pop culture’s increasingly low standards when it comes to genre filmmaking. After all, Corman-produced films helped launch the filmmaking careers of Scorsese, Cameron and Coppola, among dozens more, whereas Blumhouse acts as a low-budget home for directors whose bigger budget movies have critically and commercially underwhelmed.
It is the rare studio that can take successful auteurs like Barry Levinson or M. Night Shymalan and reduce them to directing found footage horror, rather then working the other way round and using these projects to give them their initial big break.

Paramount InSurge quietly dumped Oren Peli's "Area 51" onto Netflix this week, an ignoble end for a film that was apparently in production for the better part of a decade, and having finally seen it, my biggest question is this: why did Paramount bother with such a tortured post-production on such a slight and forgettable misfire? Oren Peli's "Paranormal Activity" is one of the genuine miracles of recent indie cinema, a micro-budget horror film that not only spawned a hundred lesser rip-offs but helped turn Jason Blum into the only producer still apparently making horror films in all of Hollywood. While a series of "Paranormal Activity" sequels managed to do a solid job of building a mythology out of the fairly slight original film, with a series of different directors rotating through, Peli moved on to his next project and started production on the film in 2009. Think about...

Producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions have become something of a phenomenon as of late, not only have they managed to redefine the current state of horror with low budget films such as Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Insidious and Sinister grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide, but Oscar winner Whiplash and Emmy and Golden Globe winner The Normal Heart were also released under the Blumhouse label. Now Blum is dipping his toes in distribution with a new genre label Bh Tilt set up at Universal Studios where the production company has a first look deal and the first release will be Eli Roth's cannibal horror feature The Green Inferno. Previously set up at Open Road, The Green Inferno was originally going to hit theaters this past September when financier Worldview Entertainment didn't live up to their P&A commitment. That September release date was going to be almost a year...

Welcome to The Last Sci-Fi Blog, a biweekly column on all things science fiction. This week we take a look at Oren Peli's long-delayed Area 51. Was it worth the wait? Find out below. Area 51 was supposed to be director Oren Peli's immediate follow-up to Paranormal Activity, the film that sent shockwaves through the horror genre and transformed its maker into an overnight sensation. Instead, the found footage sci-fi/horror movie was filmed in 2009 and sat on the shelf for years, eventually getting a quiet (and very limited) theatrical run this month. Most of the people who do watch it will watch it on some kind of streaming service. Most of the people who watch it will not like it. That shouldn't come as a surprise -- did anyone think that a movie delayed for...

Such is the power of Nirvana that a slowed-down, choral rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” transforms what could have been a rather standard trailer for Blumhouse’s found-footage frightener The Gallows into an eerie, transfixing and utterly terrifying preview.
Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing direct this latest attempt to cash in on the found-footage craze, telling the blood-curdling tale of a group of teens whose high school is reviving a play from decades earlier that previously resulted in the accidental hanging of a student. Needless to say, bringing it back was a bad idea, and soon enough, all manner of wide-eyed teenagers are running scared down dimly lit corridors, fleeing what looks to be a pretty ruthless spirit.
I put The Gallows on my list of the ten most promising summer movies that have been flying under the radar, and I’ll stand by that. Advance buzz on the pic has been extremely positive,...

Area 51 – where the hell do I begin? You have to respect Oren Peli for single-handedly redefining the horror landscape with a 10K budget and a haunted video tape (Paranormal Activity), an act that led everyone to assume the director would be treated as a golden God on whatever project he decided to tackle next. Unsurprisingly, Area 51 was announced – an obvious thematic followup. Found footage scares, alien conspiracies and a handful of unknowns who run around the Neveda desert? Hell, Peli was able to accomplish unspeakable bouts of terror by using an invisible monster, now he’d actually have evil creatures to play with! Blumhouse fanatics immediately started salivating based on Peli’s concept alone.
But then uncertainty set in. Years passed with no updates on the Area 51 front, Peli kept producing and writing other projects (The River), and not even Jason Blum could confirm what the hell...

Hot off the success of Paranormal Activity, but before that innovative horror movie would spawn its own franchise and countless knockoffs, writer-director Oren Peli made another movie that used found footage and a cast of unknowns to put a new spin on an old source of scares. It was called Area 51, and nobody has seen a thing from it since people first learned Peli was making it way back in 2009. So where has it been for six years? According to a few sources, Peli has been tinkering with it here and there, along with his Paranormal Activity producer Jason Blum. Normally such a long delay between filming and eventual release isn't a good sign, but we'll soon finally find out if Peli is the real deal or a one hit wonder, as Area 51 (his only other movie as a director) is about...

Oren Peli has not directed a film since the first Paranormal Activity in 2007. He has produced and written several projects in the last 8 years, but Area 51 is his first directorial effort since his breakout found footage hit. As the title implies, Area 51 will focus on a group of friens who mess with the wrong extraterrestrial. The film follows Reid, who has always...

This might be a textbook case of "waiting too long." Then again, I may underestimate the public's appetite for films in which characters run around while dramatic things you can almost see happen. I may be wrong. It may well be that people are actually still excited about "The new film from the director of 'Paranormal Activity.'" I suspect they're not, and that the moment for Oren Peli to release a second film should have been about five years ago, but Paramount Insurge is going to put it to the test when they finally, after long last, release "Area 51" in May. If you aren't familiar with the title, aside from the cultural echoes associated with the name Area 51, that's not surprising. This was announced as the director's follow-up to "Paranormal Activity" six years ago, and getting information about it has been tough. I read an early treatment,...

Oren Peli didn’t invent found footage movies, but everyone in the horror genre sought to copy his style after Paranormal Activity became a mega hit. If you can believe it, it has been eight long years since Peli released Paranormal Activity, and after all this time, somewhat out of the blue, a trailer has arrived for Peli’s completed follow-up, Area 51.

A month back, our very own Matt Donato sat down with Jason Blum at SXSW to chat about techno-horror Unfriended, and during their chat he managed to slip in a question about Area 51. The found footage horror produced through Blum’s own production company and directed by Paranormal Activity’s Oren Peli was completed in 2008. At the time, Blum confirmed that it would see the light of day at some point, and today that ‘point’ is now confirmed to be early May. And with less than a month until the long-awaited alien-tinged flick lands, it’s no surprise that a trailer has debuted.
From what we can glean from this first teaser, Peli sticks to the jerky hand-held format that made his 2007 debut so terrifying. With a group of relatively unknown actors, Area 51 tells of three conspiracy theorists who decide to uncover the truth about the shady government locale.

"It would be easier to rob a bank than to break into Area 51."
