Chicago – The 2011 Best of the Midwest Awards were presented on Tuesday, December 6th at the Rockit Bar and Grill in downtown Chicago, an annual ceremony that celebrates Chicago’s Midwest Independent Film Festival. HollywoodChicago.com’s Patrick McDonald and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, the co-host of “Ebert Presents: At the Movies,” were among the presenters.
Festival Director Mike McNamara was the Master of Ceremonies, giving out eight awards for the best of the 2011 season. The Midwest Independent Film Festival convenes Every first Tuesday of the month throughout the year, and showcases films directly associated with the Midwest area. This year was one of the strongest ever, as reflected in the level of winners and Midwest films that were showcased.

When faced with this question as a child, I’m sure we all had some creative answers. President, astronaut, teacher, Spider-Man, and the ever popular baseball player. The answer to what we wanted to do with our life was something we were passionate about. Something we loved with all of our hearts. Sadly, it was something that some of us grow out of. For the lucky few who are able to realize their childhood dreams, it sometimes gets taken for granted. Director Mike Diedrich takes a look at a group of men who long ago decided what it was they wanted to do with their lives. They are the Ballhawks of Wrigley Field.

Director: Mike Diedrich Starring: Bill Murray (narrator) The ballhawks of Wrigley Field have been patiently awaiting home runs around the intersection of Sheffield and Waveland ever since 1914. The more seasoned ballhawks catch hundreds of baseballs per season. They hone their ballhawking skills during batting practice; some of them even swarm around the Spring training fields in Florida. Director Mike Diedrich’s documentary -- aptly dubbed Ballhawks and featuring Bill Murray as narrator -- follows a select group of ballhawks. Surprisingly, they all live relatively normal lives. Ballhawking to them is just another hobby, you know, like fishing; and, like fishing, ballhawking requires a hell of a lot of patience. There is...a lot...of waiting...very patiently...for the...next ball...to exit...the stadium...and that...does not...happen...very...often.
