For several years, Forbes has ranked the Dallas Cowboys as not only the most valuable team in the NFL, but the most valuable sports team in the world. In 2023, the Cowboys were worth $9 billion and rising — the result of decades of exceptional athletic talent, coaching, and management that took shape during the ’90s, when the once-struggling team transformed into three-time Super Bowl champions.
The upcoming documentary series by the Emmy-winning directors of Wild Wild Country and Untold will tell the story of how “America’s Team” established a legacy. It features interviews with the architects of the Cowboys’ success, including the owner, president, and general manager, Jerry Jones, who purchased the team in 1989. Among the doc’s other commentators are players who became household names in the ’90s — Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders — as well as head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer,...

Sydney Sweeney is getting in the ring.
The breakout from, well, basically everything she’s done lately is set to play boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”). Insert your own joke here about being a knockout. The script for the untitled project was written by Mirrah Foulkes and Michôd.
Martin was the most successful female boxer of the 1990s. She signed with Don King and is the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Martin became welterweight champion — but that was about the end of the good things in her life. Christy was physically abused by husband Jim Martin, who was eventually convicted of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Christy Martin’s life is documented in “Untold,” the excellent series of documentaries by Chaplain and Maclain Way. Her episode is subtitled “Deal with the Devil,...

Exclusive: Lissette Feliciano (Women Is Losers) is attached to write and direct On Your Feet, a feature adaptation of the same-name Broadway musical that’s in early development at Sony Pictures, Deadline has learned.
A jukebox musical that tells the inspiring true story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, two Cuban immigrants who launched themselves to international musical stardom from humble beginnings, On Your Feet will be produced by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, as well as John and Jordan Davis of Davis Entertainment, with John Fox exec producing.
Premiering in November 2015 at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway, where it ran for more than 750 performances, the show specifically hones in on Gloria’s Estefan’s trajectory from her early days in Miami to her breakthrough as the lead singer of the Miami Sound Machine — a crossover artist, blending Latin and pop music — and ultimately, her triumphant return to the stage after a near-fatal accident.

If a silly golf tournament and exhibition tennis were not your thing, can Netflix interest you in Mike Tyson boxing Jake Paul live? Yes, yes, it can.
The streamer will host the fight on Saturday, July 20, 2024 from the 80,000-seat capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Someone copyright “Malice in Dallas” — quick.
Tyson’s professional record is 50-6 with 44 KOs, Paul’s is 9-1 with 6 Kos. There is quite a significant age difference between the two: Tyson is 57 and Paul is 27. Good luck handicapping this one, sportsbooks.
Paul recently knocked-out a pair of professional boxers and Golden Glove winners: Ryan Bourland this past Saturday, March 2, and Andre August in December 2023.

Actress Sydney Sweeney does not seem to be slowing down even though her last release Madame Web was a box office disaster. The actress was part of the ensemble cast in the Sony Spider-Man Universe film along with Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor. However, Sydney Sweeney seemed to have put the trolls behind her as she recently poked fun at her film. Sweeney appeared on Saturday Night Live earlier this week and referred to its failure in her monologue. The actress had joined the show as a host to promote her upcoming horror film Immaculate.

Some of you may not know this, but a few of us here on JoBlo have our roots in Montreal. I’m certainly one of them and one of the things I most remember about growing up in the city during the nineties was going to see baseball games at the Olympic stadium with my father on Friday nights. Indeed, I was always excited to see the Montreal Expos play, and for a lot of us, losing our baseball franchise was traumatic, with the team departing in 2004 to become the Washington Nationals.
Now, Netflix is green-lighting a documentary series about that infamous event, with the streamer making the announcement today. The series will be produced in Montreal by a local company called Attraction, which was signed recently to produce French-language docs for the streamer. It’s unknown if this will be done in French, English or – in true Montreal fashion – a mixture of both.

Netflix has picked up an untitled documentary about the Montreal Expos and the events surrounding the Major League Baseball team’s departure in 2004. The doc, which the streamer has confirmed exclusively to Variety, reps Netflix’s next original project out of Canada.
The doc is the first greenlit under Netflix’s new creative partnership with Montreal-based Attraction. Netflix signed a first-look deal with Attraction last November, for French-language film projects to be developed and produced by the company.
Jean-François Poisson will direct the untitled baseball doc. Marie-Christine Pouliot, Attraction’s head producer, documentary, and Richard Speer, president of Attraction, will executive produce.
According to Netflix, the film explores the setbacks that led to the departure of the Expos from Montreal and how the loss of an MLB team in Montreal continues to spark debate 20 years later.
Some of those setbacks included fee disputes between the city and Expos owner Jeffrey Loria over a new stadium,...

Well, although people had high hopes for the Dakota Johnson-Valentine release this year, Madame Web has been all over the place. From sloppy marketing to confusing script with dialogue disasters, the film’s journey has been anything but smooth. With a dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say Madame Web missed the mark.

Johnny Manziel is arguably one of the most polarizing college athletes of his time. In his first season playing quarterback for Texas A&m in 2012, he earned a major win against Alabama, the conference’s top team. The upset made Manziel a star, and he earned the nickname “Johnny Football.”
On Aug. 8, his story will be told as part of the Untold anthology series. In Johnny Football, Manziel’s growing college stardom –– and the money and problems that followed –– sets the stage for what happened when the controversial player went pro as a first round pick for the Cleveland Browns.
“I don’t think at that time in my life I really knew what to expect or what was necessarily coming in the future ahead of me,” Manziel told Tudum.

Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

“The Invisible Man” star Oliver Jackson-Cohen and “Grantchester’s” Jeremy Neumark Jones have been tapped to lead upcoming World War II feature “The World Will Tremble.”
Written and directed by Lior Geller, the film tells the true story of a group pf prisoners who broke out of the Third Reich’s first Nazi death camp, Chelmno.
Jackson-Cohen plays Solomon Wiener while Neumark Jones takes on the role of Michael Podchlebnik.
They are joined by Anton Lesser (“Andor”), David Kross (“The Reader”), Michael Fox (“Dunkirk”), Charlie MacGechan (“We Die Young”), Michael Epp (“The Beekeeper”), Danny Scheinmann (“Stan & Ollie”), Tim Bergmann and George Lenz.
Of the more than 320,000 Jews sent Chelmno, only four are known to have survived. Two of them attempted an escape — Wiener and Podchlebnik – to expose the truth and bear witness to the barbarity they witnessed.
Geller spent a decade researching and writing the film and renowned historian Dr.

"Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom" isn't hitting theaters until December, but "Saturday Night Live" took full advantage of getting franchise star Jason Momoa to host the show before he gets super busy on the international publicity tour. Momoa first hosted "SNL" back in 2018 before the release of the first "Aquaman" movie, and it was a pretty decent episode that happened just before Christmas, giving us a new holiday favorite with Momoa as a member of Santa's Elf on the Shelf team.
Sadly, this new "SNL" episode taking us into Thanksgiving week wasn't nearly as good. Strangely enough, this felt more like it was Momoa's first time hosting rather than his second trip to Studio 8H in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. While there are a couple of standout sketches, many were subpar, a couple squandered great premises, and some were just plain bad.
So let's dig into the highlights from Jason Momoa's second time hosting "Saturday Night Live.

Before Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs, there was another Battle of the Sexes. At least, that’s what happened in Saturday Night Live‘s revisionist history.
In the vein of Netflix’s Untold series, the November 18 sketch tells the story of another tennis matchup between female player Charna Lee Diamond and male opponent Ronnie Dunster (played by host Jason Momoa).
“There’d be no Billie without Charna,” one sports journalist ponders. “There just wouldn’t be.”
Once they take the court, it doesn’t take long for things to go awry. Ronnie serves the ball, sending it flying straight through Charna’s abdomen. Literally. There is now a hole in her stomach. Adrenaline keeps her going, and she demands Ronnie serve the ball again.
He’s reluctant, but Charna insists. It’s for women, after all! So, he serves the ball once more. Only this time, it decapitates her.

Live sports are at the center of the next wave of streaming evolution as live TV streaming services rely on them to attract and retain subscribers and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms — like Max, Paramount+, and Peacock — are beefing up their exclusive sports content to round out their offerings. While Netflix has thus far avoided wading too deeply into the exorbitantly priced bidding wars for live sports, the world’s largest streamer will officially enter the world of live sports streaming in its own unique Netflix way.
Netflix will broadcast its first live sporting event — the Netflix Cup — in November. The special will feature stars from its Formula 1 and PGA Tour docuseries competing in a golf tournament. The streamer held its first live event — a Chris Rock stand-up special — in March 2023. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com

Like other streamers, Netflix seems eager to get into live sports. But it isn’t quite ready to start paying the massive rights fees that such activity usually requires.
So, the streaming giant intends to launch a “Netflix Cup,” a golf tournament that will pit race-car drivers from its popular Formula 1 documentary series “Drive to Survive” against golfers from a similar effort called “Full Swing.” Both sides will tee up in a match play tournament at Wynn Golf Club on the Las Vegas Strip. The event is slated to get underway on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
If the concept sounds familiar, well, that’s because it is. Warner Bros. Discovery has gained some traction with its own series of “The Match” celebrity golf events that often tap NFL players and top golfers and are usually broadcast on cable networks like TNT. The endeavor lets Warner, which has a sports-rights portfolio built around the NBA,...

The newest Star Wars series on Disney+, Ahsoka, delivered a sizable viewing audience during its opening week. Suits continued its summer-long run as the top overall title.
The first two episodes of Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson as the title character, had 829 million minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 21-27. With a total running time of 100 minutes over the two installments, that translates to about 8.29 million complete showings of the two. (Disney+ said the first episode alone gathered the equivalent of 14 million complete plays worldwide over its first five days.)
Ahsoka’s 829 million minutes of viewing ranks second among Disney+ Star Wars shows for their series premiere weeks, behind the 1.03 billion for Obi-Wan Kenobi in May 2022. It was the No. 2 original series for the week, behind Netflix’s British import Who Is Erin Carter?, which drew 1.04 billion minutes of viewing. New seasons of The Ultimatum...

For 10 weeks in a row now, “Suits” has been the most-streamed title on Nielsen’s weekly rankings.
According to data from the ratings measurement company, it appears that viewership of the series — which had a major spike after it was added to Netflix in June despite already streaming on Peacock — is now shifting to emphasize the later seasons. When “Suits” first appeared on Netflix, Season 1 accounted for nearly 55% of viewing, though that number has now dropped to 16%.
And though “Suits” has now notched under 3 billion minutes watched for two consecutive weeks, this time with 2.7 billion minutes, it still laps its competitors considerably, with the next-most-streamed title, “Who Is Erin Carter?,” clocking in at just over 1 billion minutes. The Netflix limited series had its first four days of availability during the Aug. 21-27 viewing window.

To borrow a rhetorical device from ESPN’s great sports documentary series 30 for 30: What if I told you there exists the most dramatic college football team of all time?
Said football team was filled with enough off-the-wall stories and colorful characters to make any would-be documentarian salivate. These characters and their stories include: a megalomaniacal head coach who got fired from his first NFL job mid-season for feeling up an undergrad at a steakhouse named after him, a star defensive end who was arrested for a DUI just days before the NCAA Southeastern Conference Championship game, and a tight end who committed literal murder.
That team is real. It was the 2005-2010 University of Florida Gators. Now, what if I told you there is a just-released docuseries about said team … that completely omits all of the dramatic information cited above and more? That docuseries is also real.

As Taylor Swift once said, “August slipped away like a moment in time,” and August 2023 has been no different. Summer starts to come to a close at the end of August as kids head back to school, Labor Day looms and folks soak up those last few days before the official start of fall on Sept. 21. Netflix will say goodbye to some important titles at the end of this month as well.
The majority of films leaving Netflix will leave on the last day, so there is still time to squeeze some in before the month fully ends. Those leaving the streamer Aug. 31 include “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mean Girls,” the “Open Season” films, “Paranormal Activity,” “The Ring” and “Sleepless in Seattle” among others.

HBO’s House of the Dragon didn’t make Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of Aug. 15-21 — but only because it was available for just a few hours before the weekly tally ended.
According to Nielsen, the Game of Thrones prequel racked up 327 million minutes of viewing time on HBO Max in the few hours after its 9 p.m. Et premiere Aug. 21. The streaming rankings measure viewing from Monday to Sunday, but even with that short a window, House of the Dragon nearly cracked the top 10 for the entire week: The No. 10 acquired series for Aug. 15-21 was the Canadian drama Heartland at 422 million minutes of viewing time.
(In future charts, House of the Dragon will be part of the acquired series rankings since Nielsen counts the show’s airing on the HBO cable channel as its first run.)

Jamie Foxx vampire movie Day Shift, in its second week of availability on Netflix, topped a subdued field on Nielsen’s streaming chart for the week of August 15-21.
While no title cracked the 1 billion mark in terms of minutes of viewing for the first time since April, total streaming continued its precedent-setting dominance as a portion of the overall viewing pie. In its monthly snapshot, The Gauge, Nielsen said streaming accounted for 35 of all viewing in August. It held an edge over broadcast and cable TV for the second straight month after having reached that tipping point in July for the first time in history. (See the full Gauge chart below.)
At 957 million minutes of viewing, Day Shift surpassed The Sandman (No. 2 with 946 million) and Stranger Things. Starring Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco and Snoop Dogg, Day Shift drew an audience that was 55 multicultural, Nielsen said, with 25 of it African-American,...

During the Aug. 15-Aug. 21 viewing window, Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” broke into the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 chart at No. 4. Following the show’s Season 3 premiere, which arrived on the streaming platform on Aug. 12, the series garnered 883 million minutes watched during its first full week of availability.
“Day Shift” quickly leaped ahead of “The Sandman” for the No. 1 spot. After coming in at No. 4 the previous week shortly after its Aug. 12 release, the film charted 957 million minutes viewed.
“The Sandman” dropped to No. 2, receiving 946 minutes viewed in its second full week on the streaming platform. The ranking is a sharp decrease from the previous week’s 1.4 billion minutes watched. However, the series still holds its lead ahead of “Stranger Things” likely thanks to the premiere of the show’s bonus 11th episode, which debuted on Aug. 19.
“Stranger Things” remained in the No. 3 spot, accruing 919 million minutes viewed, while “Virgin River...

Exclusive: The Exchange has announced a licensing and partnership deal with Ddl Entertainment producers Daniele Di Lorenzo and Stefano Corti, who have optioned the rights to develop a TV series adapted from Federico Fellini’s 1960 Oscar-winning classic La Dolce Vita.
The series will be inspired by the themes of the beloved classic, starring Marcello Mastroianni as a tabloid journalist navigating the heady world of late 1950s Rome but will not be a remake.
The partners said the series will be rather a portrait of the state of contemporary media, culture, and celebrity, and the eternal pursuit of the “dream”.
They have yet to assign writers to the project but are expected to do so after a strategic development partnership is in place.
“La Dolce Vita is an instantly recognizable and beloved classic. We will bring the same daring, thoughtfulness, and beauty to this series,” said The Exchange CEO Brian O’Shea.

Now in its second season, Untold—the Netflix documentary series executive produced by brothers Chapman and Maclain Way (Wild Wild Country)—continues to offer an intriguing selection of sports-centered stories. From covering the world’s most successful female boxer to the infamous “Malice at the Palace” brawl, Volume 1 of the series became popular for choosing to tell a side of a notable story you thought you knew—essentially a nonfiction offering of feature-length episodes packaged under the Untold umbrella. As a basketball fan, I was curious to see what Volume 2 would include. Having premiered on August 16th and rolling out an episode […]

Actor Alex Wolff, who was last seen in Michael Sarnoski's critically acclaimed film "Pig," has found his next project. The actor will star in Oscar-winning filmmaker Aaron Schneider's "Untold" (via Deadline), a Holocaust survival drama based on the autobiography "I Escaped From Auschwitz" penned by Holocaust survivor Rudolf Vrba. The remarkable story is a firsthand account of Vrba's experiences as a registrar at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest German Nazi concentration camp and extermination center in German-occupied Poland, and documents the heroic tale of his escape. His memoir is supported by testimonies that illustrate the unbearable, vivid horror he experienced during his 21-month internment.
Alex Wolff will portray Vrba in the film with Schneider at the helm. The filmmaker's latest slew of projects includes the Oscar and British Academy-nominated "Greyhound," the Apple TV World War II drama starring Tom Hanks. Schneider won the Academy Award back in 2003 for "Two...
