We spoke with Whedon-verse veteran and transmedia pioneer Felicia Day about her new improvisational sci-fi comedy podcast and more.
Felicia Day has made the most of every small screen storytelling medium, from her breakout web series The Guild and the Whedon brothers’ Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog to conventional television appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, and The Magicians. She even started the Geek and Sundry production company to produce digital content, and now her colleague from that endeavor, Ryan Copple, is producing an innovative sci fi program in an unexpected form: as an improv comedy podcast called Voyage to the Stars. Day joined us to talk about her part in the podcast and to reminisce about her career.

Riese: Kingdom Falling – Season 1
Stars: Christine Chatelain, Tundra, Amanda Tapping, Sharon Taylor, Ben Cotton, Patrick Gilmore | Created by Ryan Copple, Kaleena Kiff
Riese: Kingdom Falling is a digital series distributed by Syfy.com, created by Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff. The first chapter of five episodes originally went online on the creators’ website and YouTube during the fall of 2009 under the name Riese: The Series; its success led to the creation of a second chapter and drew the attention of Syfy who bought the broadcast rights, recut, rearranged and renamed the existing episodes, added new footage and hired Stargate and Sanctuary actress Amanda Tapping as narrator. Syfy started airing the renamed Riese: Kingdom Falling from October 2010.
Riese: Kingdom Falling takes place in Eleysia, a dying kingdom where distrust and anxiety have clouded people’s minds, causing a regression into primitive ways of thinking. Rituals and mythology have resurged,...

Sanctuary, Syfy's surprise (to me) hit returns with new episodes April 15th, and the show has recently been picked up for a fourth season. I say surprise, by the way, only because the show plays fast and loose with just how wild it is going to be, and how strange the events that unfold will become, and that doesn't often sell well, even for sci-fi. When last we saw our crew, they were in a city at the center of the Earth, and who knows what might be in store for us with another season.
To help kick off the second half of the season, stars Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne were available for a Q & A call recently, and the result was really quite a cool interview.
Check it out below, along with a sneak of the next episode, and a few teaser images.

If you can’t tell by now, I’m a huge fan of the steampunk sci-fi series Riese: Kingdom Falling which is currently showing on Syfy.co.uk and will air in movie form of the Syfy channel next month. If you haven’t seen it yet, the series follows Riese, a wanted princess of the Kingdom of Eleysia that has been overthrown by a powerful society called The Sect. The evil empress Amara has proclaimed Riese a traitor, who must evade her pursuers with nothing but her wits and the help of her wolf companion, Fenrir.

Hey, it's that time of the month again, when the moon aligns just right so that there are a stack of small science fiction stories on a certain day, but nothing particularly big enough to warrant its own post. And the good news, is that it's not all terrible news.
First up, J. Michael Straczynski has acquired the rights to Harlan Ellison's legendary short story "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman." Ellison has resisted any attempt to adapt it into a film, saying:
Scripts are, in a hundred ways, more difficult and stylistically demanding than a straight story. It takes a conscious paradigm-shift in thinking to adapt something from narrative to visual media. With only a half dozen exceptions in my forty-plus years here, I've never allowed anyone else to stir my porridge. And as far as 'Repent, Harlequin!' is concerned, well, even I consider this gig to be a ball-buster.

The first Caprica Season 1.5 DVD review showed up at IGN on Friday. Here are a couple of snippets:
The final episodes ramp up the Caprica story in a big way. The show, criticized early on for being too slow-paced and ponderous, ups the tension considerably, as Daniel (Eric Stoltz), Amanda (Paula Malcomson), Joseph (Esai Morales) and Sam (Sasha Roiz) all find their lives in danger – I especially loved a Panic Room type scenario that has two characters locked inside a room, with a group of people with murderous intent trying to get in - which is even more frightening because those in danger are in the Vr world, and don't realize what is going on with their physical bodies. (..)
There are a few deleted scenes and video blogs exploring different aspects of the show. More interesting are the podcasts, which include different participants, including Magda Apanowicz, whose enthusiasm and love...

A lengthy round of updates today.
The campaigns to bring Caprica back for another season are still very much alive and kicking. The second round of apples will be shipped to Mark Stern this Thursday, and the letter campaign just got easier. If you want to send a letter to Syfy and NBC, head over to Caprica Times or the Battlestar Cafe for the addresses and info on the fastest way to do it.
Bear McCreary tweeted some great (unofficial) news about another Caprica CD, so keep an eye on him on Twitter for updates. These days, he is writing the score for Summer Glau's new show, The Cape, which kicks off on Sunday, January 9 at 9 pm on NBC. On other fronts, The Walking Dead season finale aired yesterday and Eureka is back with a holiday episode tomorrow night.

2011 will give Smallville fans 11 more episodes to bask in Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) rise to Superman fame. This past week in Smallville Season 10 Episode 10, "Luthor," John Glover guest starred as Lionel Luthor to show viewers what Clark's life would be like if he were raised a Luthor. Now Lionel's back for at least one episode in 2011. [Possible Spoilers] John Glover will be appearing in Smallville Season 10 Episode 13 alongside Allison Mack (as Chloe Sullivan) and Annette O'Toole (as Martha Kent). Chloe fans will definitely be delighted to hear that Mack will have a few more episodes to kick off 2011. The actor had recently debuted in a web series on Syfy.com called Riese. Mack will also be appearing in Smallville Season 10 Episode 12, "Collateral," alongside Phil Morris (as Martian Manhunter), Alaina Huffman (as Black Canary) and O'Toole. If you’ve been starving for an original steam punk adventure that’s easy on the eyes, look no further than the screen you’re reading this article. Created by Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff, Riese: Kingdom Falling is an original Syfy web series that’s worth an hour or two of your time. The kingdom of Eleysia is crumbling under the rule of Empress Amara (Sharon Taylor) who led a coup d’etat in murdering the royal family and appointed herself as ruler of the conquered world. Amara continues her aggressive domination, annihilating other lands that would oppose her rule and power. At her side are a group of Huntsmen led by Herrick (Ben Cotton), Senior Magister of the Sect. She is funded a religious group known as the Sect, and has forced its way on Eleysia. Now the Sect themselves are the most interesting characters in the story.

Caprica 1x16, "The Heavens Will Rise," airs tonight at 10 pm on Space. Both this week's episode and the next one, "Here Be Dragons," were directed by Michael Nankin.
Beyond that, there isn't much info out there about the last few eps, but there has been a lot of speculation about some massive plot points that happen toward the end of the season, so whether you are DVRing, downloading, waiting for the DVD, or waiting for Syfy to air the episodes, if you don't like reading major spoilers, stay away from reviews and discussion forums. Great choice there for most people: either steal or be spoiled. Thanks for that too, Syfy.
That said, Space has posted the synopsis for "The Heavens Will Rise:"
The Graystones (Eric Stoltz & Paula Malcomson) search New Cap City for Zoe (Alessandra Torresani), while Lacy (Magda Apanowicz) uncovers a mystery about the Cylons. Clarice (Polly Walker) learns the truth about Amanda.

When you think about successful series that have been developed for the web, you can't help but think about "Sanctuary." That series was so successful that Syfy moved it from the web to traditional television. Now, "Riese: Kingdom Falling" is in a very similar position after receiving a strong critical following and attracting several notable names within the genre. Set in the land of Eleysia, which has just witnessed a political coup d.état with Amara (Sharon Taylor, known for her roles in "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Smallville") taking control of the Kingdom. But she didn.t do it alone and was aided by The Sect, a fanatical religious group that has its own sinister plan (and presumably a purpose behind supporting Amara). But "Riese" is different from most fantasy shows. For a start, ...

A few scattered updates today.
CapriCast has posted a video review of Caprica 1x15, "The Dirteaters." You can find it here.
Teresa Jusino over at Tor.com has a new interview with Bear McCreary. It's mostly about his work on Human Target last season, but he also mentioned some interesting things about the BSG piano book, Caprica score in season 1.5, and the possibility of the Caprica Season One soundtrack being released:
Will there be themes from Battlestar Galactica incorporated into upcoming episodes of Caprica? Will there be a connection musically as the show progresses?
Bear McCreary: Connection musically, yes. Themes, no. I will say this: starting very soon, the episodes of Caprica take a noticeable shift and the writing and the acting and editing and music is going to get tighter and more focused, and it begins a story arc that takes us to the end of the season.

While technically this isn’t a second season order just yet, Syfy is already ordering up five new episodes of Riese: Kingdom Falling to continue its run as the flagship web series on Syfy.com. The new episodes, which had already been in the works, begin releasing today with the “Prey” (above) that mark the first time fans (in the Us at least) will get to see the second half of the opening season that first popped up a year ago before signing its current deal. Since its debut October 26th on SyFy.com, the Streamy Award winning series has been a winner for the cable network’s online hub. “We’ve had a surge of new fans, due to Syfy’s involvement,” co-creator Ryan Copple tells us. “Riese really is the best home for it. Overall, everyone’s really loving the story and the changes we made with Syfy.

Caprica 1x14, "Blowback," finally had its international premiere yesterday, for lack of a better word. The episode was written by Kevin Murphy and directed by Omar Madha, and it's definitely one of the best episodes so far. If you have seen it, wherever you may have seen it, you can rate it below.

They have also apologized to the Canadian viewers who missed last week's episode because their DVRs hadn't registered the last minute schedule change in time.

SyFy's first webseries Riese: Kingdom Falling -- a revamped version of the same series that independently premiered last year -- is now live on their site. Riese: Kingdom Falling takes place in Eleysia, a dying kingdom where distrust and anxiety have clouded people's minds, causing a regression into primitive ways of thinking.
Rituals and mythology have resurged, and the darker side of mankind has begun to reveal itself. Riese, a wanderer, travels across the decaying land with her wolf, Fenrir. Marked as a heretic by religious group The Sect and the new Empress, Riese must evade their assassins and discover their true intentions for Eleysia.

Riese is finally coming back online next week and the early promos (above) are getting us fired up again. Fans rumbled a bit when sci-fi Riese was abruptly taken offline during its first release last fall. In the puzzling game of online distribution, it’s something many series creators have come to accept as part of the web series territory. Having just signed an international distribution and sales deal with Fireworks, creators Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff had to pull it down to allow for a deal with SyFy to go through. Now the 10-episode steampunk inspired drama heads to SyFy.com as Riese: Kingdom Falling starting Tuesday October 26, with new episodes out every Tuesday and Thursday. SyFy was a natural fit for Riese, with its cast of Sanctuary and Battlestar Galactica vets like Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary), Christine Chatelain (The Bone Collector); Sharon Taylor (Stargate Universe); Ben Cotton (Harper...

Cory Doctorow and the rest of the Boing Boing crew are wearing frock coats and derbies and all ran-tan in celebratory preparation for the upcoming premiere of Riese: Kingdom Falling. The retooled, steampunk original web series debuts on Syfy.com Tuesday, October 26. Riese's initial run wasn't long for the internet. The series was released in late 2009 by creators Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff as an alternate-reality-game-slash-web-series. The duo partnered with UK-based digital distributor, Fireworks four months later. Copple and Kiff then took down the series per a request from Fireworks in the hopes that some type of moneyed distribution or development deal would follow. Two months later, they signed a deal. A $200,000 production budget put to very good use, a compelling fantasy-infused storyline, and a host of Hollywood talent - including Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary), Christine Chatelain (The Bone Collector); Sharon Taylor (Stargate Universe), Ben Cotton (Harper's Island), Allison Mack...

Fans who have followed the web series Riese are excited about the news that SyFy.com will soon be carrying the new home of the episodes. Creators, producers and stars of Riese sat down with us at New York ComicCon to talk about how the original episodes would be re-edited with new material for the debut on SyFy (later this month) and that hope was strong that Riese might actually graduate to the network itself in 2011. One of the most exciting additions to the cast is Allison MacK, who is playing a much different role that that of Chloe Sullivan from Smallville. The cast and crew of steampunk web series Riese will be hosting a panel at the upcoming London McM Expo, the event's organisers have announced.

Yesterday, the nominees for the 2010 Leo Awards were announced. The objective of this award is to celebrate all the things that have been done in the film and television industry of the Prairies and the province British Columbia along with people who are based in these regions. Furthermore, foreign TV series and films that are produced in Canada's West are also included in the party. Obviously, this is not the full list of nominees. It’s been an extremely exciting week for the Riese team. Not only did they pick up a Streamy win for Best Cinematography at Wednesday’s Craft Awards, they also teamed up with legendary Icm New Media agent George Ruiz. Ruiz also reps web series standouts like Felicia Day, Alex Albrecht and Brigitte Dale. And as if that wasn’t enough, then came the exciting news Thursday that SyFy has acquired Canadian series Riese for both online distribution and possible development for television. This will mark a return to the web for the series that had been pulled offline a few months back when it linked up with international rights distributor Fireworks. Tubefilter had a chance to chat with Riese creator Ryan Copple (little bit of trivia: he actually originates from Omaha, Nebraska) on the team’s reactions to the deal, how it will effect future production, and how the fans feel about the development.

The 18-year-old actor from Vancouver, B.C., has landed roles in a broad swath of hit television series and feature films, including “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” “Smallville,” “Fringe” and the Cartoon Network’s new live-action series, “Tower Prep.”

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

And we were just getting into it! Riese, the steampunk-infused fantasy web series drama that has been unfolding online since its launch back in November, has been pulled down due to request from its new distribution partner Fireworks, the digital distribution arm of UK-based ContentFilm. The series had just begun Chapter 2 this week, releasing its six episode before the takedown occurred earlier today. This is the same firm that had picked up international distribution rights for recent web series like MTV New Media's college mystery Valemont and Endemol UK's sci-fi thriller Kirill. Just trailers are left online on their YouTube channel and on KoldCast TV, which was the primary online network distributing the series. No word at this point when or if the series will return to the internet. An excerpt from a blog post today by creators Ryan Kopple and Kaleena Kiff explaining the takedown (emphasis added): We also recently partnered with Fireworks,...
