Who is the actress playing Aunty Zinnia Hobson?
simonize85023 October 2021
She is Debra McGrath - not relatively to fellow Canadian actor, Doug - born in 1954 and married to Colin Mochrie.

Ms McGrath is over the top in this episode and she drags along the rest of the cast from the police station. All of them - they all shine and must have enjoyed jamming and hamming it up, shamelessly.

George drags Effie out of her funk; Julia continues to antagonize the medical community. All the while the tale of a handsome murdered gigolo gives the writers the opportunity to reformat THE STING.

Coincidently Helene Joy celebrated her 43rd birthday this week. I can't understand why the producers insist on making drab even drowsy. Women can be both educated and professional, compassionate and strong willed. Her gallery here on IMDB will witness another side to her.

Lastly what a pain with the APP and log in and seeing and hearing security questions.

Thanks for reading.

At least CBC has this series as an export item. Too bad.certain destinations change the title as they did with ORDE; LEWIS (cannot remember what they tried with ENDEAVOUR... or they would have removed the 'u'.

A footnote: My 4K Cinema Paradiso has both US and UK subtitles for this classic Italian language gem!

Enjoyable all-around

Warning: Spoilers
This season so far seems to have a bit more fun in it. George's aunts are so enjoyable, and this was the best episode starring one so far. Each of the plots in this was funny or endearing, but I especially was interested in Julia's part of the episode. I've been wondering when she'd directly interact with the terrible state of women's healthcare in the early twentieth century (honestly it's not that much improved these days) and this one hit home. I almost lost an ovary (or worse) from an ovarian torsion myself, due to a (cis male) doctor who said I was fine, even after another doctor had sent me to hospital to be operated on. Torsions can be lethal if untreated, and this episode finally revealed Julia's hospital for what it functionally was--a pricey, high risk men's club for doctors to praise one another's intellect and achievements, regardless of patient health or outcomes. Women are still (in 2021) seen as unreliable narrators in reporting pain and ailments of our own bodies, and hysteria has been a misdiagnosis for so long it's effected our history of medical conditions (i.e. Until the 1920s men were diagnosed with MS more often than women, because women presenting with the same symptoms were diagnosed with hysteria). I'm very curious to see what Murdoch Mysteries will do with such material. Will Julia open her own practice?

Out of character

Warning: Spoilers
I don't agree with the approach of promoting personas such as Aunt Zinnia as likeable. She is a crook and unscrupulous, taking peoples' money and humiliating them, and this makes the sympathetic approach of Murdoch, Watts and Brackenreid to her as out of character.

The same I can claim for Julia's director. He have seen him following the evidence of Julia's actions, despite initially disagreeing with her, and eventually thanking her for saving the hospital's reputation from the gutters. Here, the director directly ignored the obvious evidence that the other doctor was criminally wrong, and that Julia saved the woman's life and demanded for her to apologize, also ignoring the fact that the said doctor went into the surgery room during the operation, putting the patient's life yet again in danger.

Despite that I have seen this episode described as 'fan' I did not enjoy it the least and I hope the writers will not put the protagonists sympathizing crooks ever again.

Just not sure if it's a bad story, bad directing, or just bad altogether. Maybe it's a parody, and I am missing the puns. Either way, the directing seems off and the story isn't good,l. Did I mention the weirdly horrible camera shots?

Bad and weird

The wide-angle lens directly in everyone's face, only adds to the strangeness of this episode. Multiple shots barely fit the characters in frame. The acting and storyline are a trainwreck.

I'm not sure what they were trying here, but it was just bad bad bad.

Murdoch almost becomes a secondary character, practically a clueless buffoon. Aunt Zinnea is a joke, her acting is so fake and forced.

This entire season has been very up and down. Highly disappointing from a long term fan. One would hope that a series with such long history would maintain a level of quality. It definitely seems to be slipping.
