"It's the essence of flirting." So how do you refresh and revitalize the romantic comedy genre? That's what I was hoping to find out from Canadian director Michael Dowse, the man behind the excellent film What If. I first saw this film at last year's Tiff 2013, and loved it, ranking it as one of my 5 favorite films of that festival. It was known as The F Word back then (and still is in Canada) but was retitled to What If for its Us release, which is something I had to ask him about. What If stars Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan as a young couple perfect for each other–their chemistry was a topic, too. View the full video interview below. Michael Dowse is also the director of the films Fubar, Fubar: Balls to the Wall, It's All Gone Pete Tong and Goon with Seann William Scott. If you've seen any of those films,...

Fubar. It’s All Gone Pete Tong. Fubar: Balls to the Wall. Goon.
While those film titles may sound foreign to some, Canadian cult moviegoers have really come to embrace the work of Michael Dowse. While he branched off into American cinema with the little seen Topher Grace vehicle Take Me Home Tonight, his work remains very much Canadian. And that is why it is so odd to see him directing a romantic comedy like The F Word. It sounded interesting enough, but could the guy who gave us Fubar really deliver something that needs to be sweet and cheerful? Especially after the casual brutality of Goon? Well, the answer may surprise you.
Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) is a bit of a shut-in. He broke up with his girlfriend over a year ago, he dropped out of med school, and now he lives in the attic of his sister’s home in suburban Toronto.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Yesterday brought you the first trailer for “Take me Home Tonight” and “Fubar: Balls to the Wall” director Michael Dowse’s hockey fighting movie “Goon”, starring Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber as said hockey players doing most of the fighting. Today brings you the Red Band version of that trailer. It’s essentially the same trailer, but with a lot more cussing involved. And maybe a little bit more blood. Hey, hockey’s a violent sport, so the trailer should be just as violent, I suppose. Labelled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way. Starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber, Alison Pill, Kim Coates, Eugene Levy, and directed by Michael Dowse. Baruchel is also the film’s co-writer. And here...

The Film:
Just Give’R.
Acting like a Canadian catch phrase of Nebraska’s stain of a comedian known as Larry the Cable Guy’s “Git Er Done!“, Fubar: Balls to the Wall is far funnier and better than anything we’ve gotten from Larry the Unfunny Cable Guy. All similarities end there. Fubar was a cult hit amongst our buddies from the Great White North, which was a heavily improvised, shot-on-digital mockumentary of a couple of metalheads who just can’t connect the dots in life. For this sequel, director Michael Dowse returns to his debut with the same hilarity and freshness, something he told me he needed, after the drama of Take Me Home Tonight.
No need to have seen that 2002 film, since the sequel plays into a new audience, while honoring its established fans. Fubar: Balls to the Wall follows the five year anniversary of Dean being cancer free.

Release date: April 20, 2011
The sequel to the Canadian mockumentary comedy, Fubar, has arrived. Screen Media Films have been marketing this film as "Spinal Tap meets The Trailer Park Boys" - but it's got a bit of Jackass in there too, as well as a touch of Tenacious D, Bill and Ted, and Wayne's World thrown in for good measure. And while there is truth to the comparisons above, there's something about the sequel, Fubar: Balls to the Wall that stands on its own. If you're a metalhead, and enjoy any of the films mentioned above, then this is a movie you will most likely enjoy.

Aggressively stoopid, yet too polite to be offensively mean-spirited, Fubar: Balls to the Wall is the rare sequel that doesn't require seeing the original. And, counter-intuitively for a mock doc style comedy, the Blu-ray features stunningly gorgeous shots of the Frozen North, almost to the point that I wanted to throw on six layers of clothing and and follow Terry and Dean as they seek work on an oil pipeline. Terry (David Lawrence) and Dean (Paul J. Spence) are rather dim dudes with a zest for living, which, in this movie, means they love bashing into things and drinking beer and smoking weed. They'd rather not work, thank you very much, but Dean especially is feeling the pressure of not being able to provide...

Festivals are truly a special portion of the overall film world.
While many may play home to otherwise bigger pictures (look at Cannes, who this year will premiere films like Kung Fu Panda 2), but there is truly nothing quite like seeing a film that you ultimately had no idea about going into the screening.

Theatrical releases appear to be a bit lacking for this coming weekend, but fortunately it's a great week to get caught up on some 2010 flicks you might have missed on DVD and Blu-ray. The biggest release of the week is Best Picture winner The King's Speech followed by the Jack Black dud Gulliver's Travels, but more compelling options include Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, the Nicole Kidman / Aaron Eckhart drama Rabbit Hole, and Peter Weir's The Way Back. If that's not enough, Fubar II and Ip Man 2 are both out in the U.S. this week, plus the first season of environmentalist animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers, not to mention Mortal Kombat on Blu-ray! Will you be buying or renting anything this week? Which movies would you recommend? Check out the list of releases after the jump. Amazon.com Widgets

Last week, there wasn't quite the bevy of options for available releases as there are this week. This week there isn't a retro release of a film with a large fan base like The Incredibles, but this week does offer a wide variety of films. From underground comedy, to new Criterion, and of course a major Oscar-winning film, there is a lot to choose from this week.

Make no mistake about Fubar: Balls to the Wall, it is hilarious. It is downright funny in a way that Jackass 3 was funny with the exception that the talent of David Lawrence and Paul Spence, who play Terry and Dean, respectively, are comedic actors who are so in tune to these characters that they feel like second skin that’s easily gotten into. They sell their performances by leaning on their abilities and it’s not really the story that’s compelling about this film, it’s them.

While Take Me Home Tonight sat on the shelf over at Universal, a frustrated Michael Dowse went back to Canada and freed himself with a sequel to the cult film, Fubar – his debut. With Fubar II: Balls to the Wall coming to Blu-ray and DVD April 19th, the director caught up with Killer Film for a chat and why he give’r again to us.
Jon: Fubar over the years, became a quiet cult film, so when did the sequel come to?
Michael Dowse: Actually, we’ve been mulling over it for about four years, around when we finished the first film. We didn’t want to rush back to the sequel, but then opportunity came forth, so we thought let’s write it and if we like what we wrote, we would make it. So that’s what happened. Despite the behind-the-scenes mess that was Take Me Home Tonight, Killer Film loved the film (review here), so we’re pretty excited for what director Michael Dowse does next.
While out promoting the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of his Fubar II: Balls to the Wall, Killer Film caught up with the Canadian comedic director as he updates us on Goon.
“I f*cking loved it. Goon is a great film; I’m in post now,” he exclaims. The film stars Jay Baruchel (She’s Out of My League, How to Train Your Dragon), Seann William Scott (American Pie, Role Models), Eugene Levy (American Pie franchise), and Liev Schrieber (Scream, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Written by Baruchel as well, Goon follows an outcast and a bouncer who overcome long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way.

What’s Fubar: Balls to the Wall, you ask? The film is a sequel to the cult hit from 2002, which marked Michael Dowse’s debut, who would later on direct Take Me Home Tonight and the upcoming Goon adaptation.

At the bottom, you'll also find mine and Stephen's picks for the five best films at this year's SXSW. Enjoy. I know we did.

Continuing with my Fubar: Balls To The Wall interviews is David Lawrence, the person. Last week I posted the interview I did with him in his Fubar character, Terry Cahill. I witnessed most journalists just doing interviews with him as Terry, but I know Lawrence co-wrote both FUBARs and was sure he had a lot of interesting things to say about pre- and post-production.

Dean (“Deaner”) and Terry don’t ask for a lot in life. All they want is a trunk load of beer, heavy metal music, and an occasional acid trip vacation. They live day to day doing the most idiotic things an 18 year old headbanger from the 1980s without any direction in life would do (see above photo). There are no rules in Dean and Terry’s world, and anarchy to them means slumming it without all of the violence. As a viewer, it’s attractive watching these two comedically destroy their lives all the while trying to better themselves.

In this Canadian stoner comedy, director Michael Dowse attempts a combination of “Wayne’s World” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” mixing comedy and mockumentary styles fairly flawlessly. Our heroes, Dean (Paul J. Spence) and Terry (David Lawrence), are two loser, drug-addled metalheads whose lives are going nowhere, slowly.
Still, these failures are lovable in their sheer ineptitude, and they’re acutely aware of their lack of skills, declaring, “Knowledge of no knowledge is power.” This is a place where “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Bon Jovi is the ultimate love ballad and where all there is to lovin’ life is exploiting workers’ compensation, grinding guitars and blowing through cash at strip clubs.

Yesterday I interviewed Canadian (crucial to note he’s Canadian) actor David Lawrence, who came to SXSW dressed as his Fubar character, metalhead Terry Cahill. This is the first of two interviews I did with Lawrence (one as Terry, one as himself). In this interview (that I think is hilarious), we talk about why Dean (Paul Spence) wasn’t able to cross the border to make it to SXSW and what they’ve been up to post Balls To The Wall. Check out the video after the break!

Whew, somehow we all survived the Hesher and The Fp after parties last night (stay tuned for a video recap of the Hesher madness). Thankfully, we’ve had most of today to rehydrate and recover in preparation for another round of head-banging late night awesome. This time it’s the official film after party for Fubar: Balls To The Wall. We’ll have metal karaoke on the Highball’s stage and the film’s producers are buying everyone 2 drinks! And… admission is Free. RSVP here!
Directed by Michael Dowse, Fubar: Balls To The Wall stars Terry and Dean, barely scraping by headbanger relics, who travel up North when they find out about the sweet cash they could make working the pipelines. Flush with money and confidence, Terry starts dating Trish, a local waitress, and things get serious in a hurry. Meanwhile, Dean’s life starts to spiral out of control...

Dean "Deaner" Murdock (Paul J. Spence), the Canadian star of Fubar: Balls To The Wall has been denied entry into the Us for SXSW, where the film is having its Us premiere Monday at 9:30 pm. He is one half of the head-banging duo profiled in the film. The other half, Terry Cahill (David Lawrence) was allowed to cross the border. Murdock says, “I aint gonna take this personally; the f@#kin’ border guy who searched me was just doin’ his job, but f@#k why did he have to have such thick fingers? Giv'r to yer liv'r in my honor tonight, and fer f@#k's sakes, wash yer denim before you cross the border.” Cahill says, “It will be a total bummer partying without Dean here but ...

[With Michael Dowse's Fubar II now screening at SXSW we revisit Todd Brown's earlier review.]Cue the binge drinking.Way back in 2002, just a few years before documentary style comedy broke into the mainstream, Canada's Michael Dowse beat The Office - at least the Us version - and the subsequent wave of similarly styled projects to the punch with Fubar. The Sundance selected story of two Canadian metalheads abusing a wide variety of substances while coping with the 'nut cancer' that will ultimately claim a testicle. Terry and Dean became a cult phenomenon and now, eight years later, they are back. And seldom have I been more proud to be a Canadian. For those who have not seen the first film, have no fear: Fubar II...

'Fubar: Balls to the Wall' is the funniest recent comedy you've never heard of. Unless you're Canadian, in which case you're more likely to be familiar with Terry and Dean, the magnificent morons at the core of Michael Dowse's sequel to his 2002 comedy, 'Fubar.' But hopefully soon American audiences will fall in love this hilarious and surprisingly sentimental film about two headbangers trying to get their lives together. Think of it as though Mike Judge made a live-action, thoroughly Canadian cross between 'Beavis and Butthead' and 'King of the Hill' and you'll get a fair idea of what's in store.
Or, to get an even better idea, you could just watch the below exclusive clip from the film. And if it hits all the rights note with you, as it does with us, mark your calendars for April 19th,...

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

In three or four months when your walking past your local RedBox and you see a DVD titled Take Me Home Tonight, please don’t take its advice. The sin of the film is it stretches what should be a second act of a film into the whole narrative, it’s a film about “one big night” and when characters are aware it’s going to be a “big night” – it kind of takes the fun out of the film.

I’m not sure how many caught the original “Fubar”*, a tale of drinking, head-banging and hi-jinks, but the stars of that particular show are back for a sequel, Fubar: Balls to the Wall.
Terry and Dean seem to be as highly strung as ever, though this time they are working, as well as smashing stuff up and dry-humping cases of beer.
Judging by the trailer, if this is your sort of thing you should get a lot of enjoyment out of it. If it isn’t, it is hard to imagine this making a convert of you.
Fubar: Balls to the Wall played in various Canadian film festivals in September last year and after playing at the South by Southwest Film Festival in the Us in March 2011 will then find its way onto DVD in April. Enjoy the trailer below.

“Fubar” is an amazing movie. The first time I saw it I laughed so hard I nearly did some permanent damage to my inside bits. For those of you unfamiliar with the film, it is a 2002 mocumentary directed by Michael Dowse (“Take Me Home Tonight”) that follows Terry (David Lawrence) and Deaner (Paul Spence), a pair of roustabout Canadian metal heads who party their way through life without a care in the world. If you haven’t seen “Fubar”, drop what you’re doing (whatever you’re up to, it’s not really all that important) and take any and all necessary measures to watch is as soon as humanly possible. You’ll spend the next few weeks confusing all of your little buddies by yelling things like, “I suggest you take up another sport, like knitting” and “just get in there and give’r”. The sequel, “Fubar: Balls to the Wall...

Here is the first trailer for Fubar: Balls to the Wall. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and it's set to premiere at this year's SXSW.
The film is the sequel to the 2002 Canadian mockumentary Fubar, "about two dimwitted metal heads. Fubar: Balls To The Wall catches up with them almost a decade later, and they’re no smarter."
Here is the synopsis for the film:
"Headbanger relics, Terry (Dave Lawrence) and Dean (Paul J. Spence), are tired of trying to give’r while barely scraping by, so when their old buddy, Tron (Andrew Sparacino), hooks them up with jobs they head up North to make sweet cash working on the pipelines during the holidays.

Disclaimer: I purposefully did not include Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. For my purposes, it’s too American. I am interested in hearing if you think it should qualify and if you are willing to undertake a discussion on defining National Cinema. It is tricky, I certainly don’t object to others who would include it on their own list. - Honourable mention: The Wild Hunt (Alexander Franchi) - 5. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (Eli Craig) - For fear of spoiling the twist of this film (which, mind you, comes very early on), it is surprising that this is the first instance I have personally encountered to take this approach to the horror comedy that uses this narrative convention. Aided by its strong cast, headed up by Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk, two actors who have already made their name in the cult-culture arena, Tucker & Dale is a sure-fire crowdpleaser. Effectively...

How do you know when a mockumentary is Canadian? Well, it might open with a disclaimer like this: “The following ‘documentary’ is fictional. We apologize to any person appearing in the film who believed the documentary was real. Your agreement to appear in the film is greatly appreciated.” That’s from the opening of Fubar, Michael Dowse’s faux-chronicle of a pair of Calgary headbangers as they navigate their way through adulthood, mortality and many, many Pilsners. The film was popular enough to spawn a sequel, this weekend’s Fubar II, so Derek, Detroit and Simon will assess both flicks as well as Dowse’s semi-verisimilitudinous take on Ibiza rave culture, It’s All Gone Pete Tong.

The first trailer and poster for Take Me Home Tonight, a new comedy from Canadian director Michael Dowse (It’s All Gone Pete Tong, Fubar, Fubar II: Gods of Blunder), have been released.
Synopsis: As the summer of 1988 winds down, three friends on the verge of adulthood attend an out-of-control party in celebration of their last night of unbridled youth. Starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer, Take Me Home Tonight is a raunchy, romantic and ultimately touching blast from the past set to an awesome soundtrack of timeless rock and hip-hop hits. Recent MIT grad Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) should be working for a Fortune 500 company and starting his upward climb to full-fledged yuppie-hood. Instead, the directionless 23-year-old confounds family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. But Matt’s silent protest against...

Cinematical is happy to exclusively premiere the first poster for 'Take Me Home Tonight,' a new comedy from Canadian director Michael Dowse ('Fubar,' 'It's All Gone Pete Tong,' 'Fubar II: Gods of Blunder'). Previously titled 'Kids in America,' Dowse's film is a period piece comedy set in the '80s* starring Anna Faris, Topher Grace, Dan Fogler, Michelle Trachtenberg and Teresa Palmer as a gang of 20-somethings who have one last screw-everything party before the onset of adulthood in the '90s. That's just the short of it, though, here's the long, official synopsis:

In 2002 a small, very low budget mockumentary was produced in western Canada that gained a fair measure of critical acclaim and became a cult favourite rather quickly. Fubar was the tale of two life-long friends and head-bangers who were forever given'er, drinking beer like men and wearing fantastically quoiffed hockey-hair. It made Ranylt Richildis' list of Ten Secret Canadian Films, which should be enough to convince you that it's definitely worth watching. It's unceasingly funny, sometimes poignant and an interesting exploration of both friendship and documentary filmmaking. It's may have also suffered a severe head injury.
Apparently, it was successful enough to warrant a sequel as, on October 1, 2010, Fubar 2 will be released in Canada. The synopsis Via Tribute.ca:
The story starts in Calgary where the boys are tired of trying to give'r while barely scraping by, when their old buddy and party leader, Tron (Andrew Sparacino) hooks them...
