When you look at his body of work, it’s hard to believe Rory Kinnear is only 44: the man’s covered a hell of a lot of ground. He’s earned his place as a household name with roles like Tanner – M’s efficient Chief of Staff in several Bond films including Skyfall – and Detective Nock in Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game, but while many actors would be rightly chuffed to bag these roles, they’re merely the tip of Kinnear’s acting iceberg.
Few actors, for instance, can claim to be responsible for a scene that has been burned onto our retinas, never to be forgotten, no matter how hard we try. For Rory Kinnear, that scene is in Black Mirror episode ‘The National Anthem’, the very first instalment of this disturbing dystopian anthology series, where he plays a Prime Minister forced into doing the dirty...

After starting off on stage and then moving to the big screen, Tyler Perry’s Madea is now headed to television.
Showtime is developing Mabel, a drama series created by Perry and Tim Palen. The high-profile project, which has received a multiple-script order, tracks the origin story of the larger-than-life Madea character created and performed by Perry. It is written by JaNeika James and JaSheika James.
Per Mabel’s official description, every great story has to start somewhere and every legend has a beginning. Long before she was the force of nature known as Madea she was a smart, fierce, irresistible, dangerous, crazy 20-something black woman named…Mabel Simmons. When she moved to Atlanta in 1972 she set the city – and the world – on fire!
Perry and Palen executive produce alongside JaNeika and JaSheika James.

Forty years ago, on December 8th, 1980, John Lennon was murdered outside of his New York City apartment building. Three days prior to the tragic event, he spoke with Rolling Stone for nine hours. He was famously photographed by Annie Leibovitz for that story, naked and curling up in a fetal position next to a fully-clothed Yoko Ono. “This is it,” he told the photographer. “This is our relationship.” The image would become the cover of our January 22nd, 1981 issue, a heartbreaking tribute to the legend whom Rs founder Jann Wenner...

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.

Rory Kinnear's roles have ranged from Denis Thatcher on TV to the gloomy Dane on stage. Now he talks about playing M's desk-bound sidekick in Skyfall
So much for showbiz perks: Rory Kinnear can't even get a cup of tea. We're in a pub near London Bridge and Kinnear is pleading – ever so politely – with the barmaid. "Don't have the staff," she replies, face like stone. It's mid-afternoon last Wednesday. He settles for a half of bitter, looking sheepish and a touch guilty, like an accountant who's just missed a tax deadline.
I'm secretly hoping for a hissy fit, but within seconds of meeting him you sense this isn't really Kinnear's style. We're here to talk about his turn in Skyfall as Bill Tanner, M's long-serving, long-suffering sidekick, a drudge if ever there was one: the kind of spy who, if Bond lent him the Aston Martin, would only...

Ewan McGregor (l.), Kerry Fox and Christopher Eccleston must deal with a corpse and a suitcase filled with cash in Shallow Grave.
The 1994 dark comedy/thriller Shallow Grave was the first film from director Danny Boyle (127 Hours), producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter John Hodge (the team behind Boyle’s 1996 Trainspotting).
In the movie, three self-involved Edinburgh roommates—played by Kerry Fox (An Angel at My Table), Christopher Eccleston (Lennon Naked), and Ewan McGregor (Beginners), in his first starring role—take in a brooding boarder. When he dies of an overdose, leaving a suitcase full of money, the trio embarks on a series of very bad decisions, with extraordinarily grim consequences for all.

The BBC’s brilliant detective TV show Sherlock gives us only one complaint: The seasons are too short!
Like its first season, Sherlock: Season Two has only three episodes. They are 90 minutes each, but we’d still like more of these fabulous stories and witty dialog.
The British mystery series brings Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s characters into modern-day London. Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse) stars as the exceptional detective Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) as Dr. Watson, a medical doctor back home after time with the Army in Iraq.
In the second season, Holmes and Watson get embroiled in the dangerous plans of the desirable Irene Adler (Lara Pulver, TV’s True Blood), investigate a supernatural beast lurking in eerie landscape and, of course, battle Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott, Lennon Naked).

It looks like a feature film about the career of the Beatles is well on its way to being made. Though they are one of the most popular bands of all time, few movies have dared tackle retelling the story of how they made it big. With the exception of the 2010 TV movie "Lennon Naked" that was based on the life of John Lennon, the closest Hollywood has come to capturing the magic of the Beatles was in the 2009 Lennon biopic "Nowhere Boy" and in 2007's Beatles-inspired "Across the Universe." But no longer.
The Playlist has learned that "In the Loop" screenwriter Jesse Armstrong has already penned an adaptation of Richard Dilello's book "The Longest Cocktail Party." The flick would be directed by "The Killer Inside Me" helmer Michael Winterbottom.
The script documents the major events in the latter half of the Beatles' career after Apple's Saville Row recording...

James Marsters (Buffy, Caprica), Stephanie Jacobsen (Melrose Place, Battlestar Galactica: Razor) and Naoko Mori (Torchwood) fans, hang in there! Syfy is still keeping Three Inches in mind for a series pickup. The series had initially lost out to Alphas for a place in the fall line-up, but network president Mark Stern states that they have not thrown Three Inches out of the window:
“We’re looking at another way to get Three Inches going. We love it, so we’re trying to figure out a way to do both [that and Alphas] right now.”
As SciFi Mafia reported to you last December, one of the options the network was looking at for Three Inches was to reformat it from a one-hour format into a half-hour structure. Hopefully, they can make this work!
Three Inches’ sci-fi star-studded cast includes James Marsters (Dragonball 2, Caprica, Smallville), Andrea Martin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Not for Nothing), Stephanie Jacobsen (Melrose Place,...

While SyFy is still considering how to develop Three Inches, one option the network is looking at is to shorten the series to become a half-hour long drama instead of an hour-long show. In a recent decision by SyFy, Alphas was the superhero-series that came out on top between the two pilots to develop. SyFy’s VP of Original Programming Mark Stern assured all that Three Inches is not being dropped:
“We found ourselves with two pilots that we loved. They were both excellent and tested very well. Ultimately it came down to which pilot would work best as an hour-long franchise.
We loved the cast and the directing, and the writing was fantastic, but it’s very similar to Alphas. Now we have to figure out a way so both shows can live on our air.”

With the 50th anniversary of the Beatles forming and the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death, there’ been plenty of Fab Four news coverage and media for sale this year. Lennon Naked is the BBC’s made-for-tv movie contribution, and it fits that most cynical of sub-genres: the cash-in-on-an-important-moment movie. Rather than a fresh, innovative take on John Lennon’s psychology, as the title promises, it tries to show his whole life as a response to daddy issues. However, it does feature John Lennon (or rather, Christopher Eccleston) butt naked. A couple of times.
The film is a dramatization of Lennon’s life, but it seems that the moments they chose were pulled from a hat. The film starts with him finally seeing his estranged dad (Christopher Fairbank) in 1964, after 17 years, and nonsensically insulting him like some erstwhile Bob Dylan. We immediately know where this film is going, but...

Superheroes are about to take a on a new perspective. SyFy had its eye on two particular new dramas featuring people with abilities, Alphas and Three Inches, over the last year. The network has greenlit Alphas for eleven episodes in addition to the ninety-minute pilot order and still “continues to be interested in” Three Inches, that also has a ninety-minute pilot order.
After a rough start, Alphas which began as a project named Section 8 with BermanBraun Television in 2007, is expected to begin filming early next year in Toronto with a 2011 summer debut. Mark Stern, VP of Original Programming at Syfy loved a new take on the superhero genre, pointing to the fact that Alphas puts a different spin on “the idea of ordinary people who have one slightly extraordinary feature about them and are singularly not so special but together can do extraordinary things.” Check out the show’s...

Rating (out of 5): ***
A John Lennon mini-revival is underway, with Sam Taylor Wood's recent theatrical release Nowhere Boy focusing more on the enigmatic Beatle's adolescent struggles and this 2010 BBC TV production Lennon Naked, which whips forward through a few seminal moments in Lennon's life from 1964 to 1971, as both the world at large and Lennon's own world went through extreme changes. The BBC film explores how Lennon dealt with that rocky upbringing and ways it affected his relationships as an adult, with friends and family (including his sensitive son Julian). The sudden death of manager Brian Epstein, often called "the Fifth Beatle" for his importance to the band, is another event that, as depicted in the film, made Lennon resentful and empty. And Lennon's long-estranged father (played by British telly mainstay Christopher Fairbank) comes back into his life to attempt to make amends -- or to glom on to his wealth.

Synopsis: This drama focuses on the turbulent and intense period of John Lennon.s life as he was reunited with his estranged father and first met Yoko Ono. Imagine there.s no people. It's easy if you try. Yes, I know. Quoting a line from one of Lennon.s songs is a bit of a cop out when starting a review, but having seen this movie, it sort of gives a little bit of insight into where that lyric may have come from. "Lennon Naked," which starred Christopher Eccleston in the title role wasn.t exactly a magical mystery tour, and it wasn.t fun nor meant to be. Though there were a few funny moments. What the film was is really...

London, June 24 – British actress Naoko Mori has confessed that she got drunk to film all the nude scenes in the new BBC drama ‘Lennon Naked’.
The Japanese-born actress is playing Yoko Ono alongside Christopher Eccleston, who plays Beatles legend John Lennon, in the BBC Four film.
Former Torchwood star Naoko, 34, said that she was so nervous to bare all in front of the camera that she drank half a bottle of tequila before 8am.
“I can’t really remember much of that day. Maybe it was the half bottle of tequila. I’ve always sworn I’d never do nudity on screen,” the Daily.

BBC News reveals the real reason Christopher Eccleston left Doctor Who, and it wasn’t because he was afraid of being typecast: Actor Christopher Eccleston quit Doctor Who after one series because he "didn't enjoy the environment and the culture" of the show. Eccleston, who is about to star in BBC Four biopic Lennon Naked, took on the role of the Time Lord when Russell T Davies revamped Doctor Who in 2005. He told the Radio Times he was proud of the show but "wasn't comfortable" working on it. Geez, what could they have done to the poor guy? The hints are tantalyzingly vague enough to account for almost anything, from childish pranking to actual whipping of the interns: "I was open-minded but I decided after my experience on the first series that I didn't want to do any more," he said. ... "I thought if I stay in this job, I'm...

Christopher Eccleston has said that he does not really have heroes. The former Doctor Who star plays John Lennon in BBC Four's upcoming Lennon Naked but told Metro that the ex-Beatle was a far from perfect human being. Eccleston said: "I don't really do heroes. Heroes are dangerous because it's very unrealistic to elevate people to heroic status. "Lennon was somebody I admired but I came to him quite late. And there was no doubt he was somebody who could be quite difficult to love." Of his portrayal of Lennon's difficult interaction with his son Julian, (more)...

… but the Shallow Grave actor is considering a move into comedy after primal scream soul-baring of Lennon Naked
Back in 1994, when Christopher Eccleston was playing a psychotic chartered accountant in Shallow Grave, he spent the best part of a day in a working mortuary pretending to be dead. There wasn't enough money to recreate the mortuary in a studio and, anyway, director Danny Boyle wanted to keep it real. So Eccleston, then 30 and best known for playing Derek Bentley in Let Him Have It three years earlier, was put in a drawer with a Glaswegian member of the crew.
"I was stark bollock naked and the Glaswegian, who was dressed in a parka, Doc Martens and jeans, kept saying, 'Are we finished? 'Cos I'm fucking freezing, by the way.' And all this time, I'm lying not only naked but next to a head that had recently been fished out of the River Clyde.

Christopher Eccleston has claimed that John Lennon would be pleased with the new drama about him. Eccleston plays the musician in Lennon Naked and explained that he used archive material to help him prepare for the role. "I think you have to look at them as a human being and as a character," he told AOL. "Fortunately with Lennon, I've got all these resources of how they walked and talked. "It's about mindless repetition of watching videos, reading books and not worrying too much about the fact that he is a Godhead, in my eyes. I could start by relying on other people's talent and imagination too, because it wasn't those (more)...

A wink and a nod: Is there a coded message behind actor Christopher Eccleston’s explanation why he quit Doctor Who after just one season? He says he “didn’t enjoy the environment and the culture” of the show. And the media is just leaving it at that.
It sort of came out of nowhere, years later, in an interview with the U.K. magazine Radio Times. After a successful reinvention of the Doctor Who franchise in 2005, star Christopher Eccleston rather mysteriously bowed out at the end of the first season.
The official announcement cited a grueling production schedule and Eccleston’s fear of being typecast. The BBC later retracted its statement and admitted it hadn’t spoken to Eccleston before it was issued.
And that’s where things remained until Eccleston’s Radio Times interview this week in the run-up to his role in the upcoming BBC biopic Lennon Naked.

Former Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston has finally spoken out about his short-lived tenancy in the Tardis.
He says he quit his role as the Time Lord because he did not enjoy the working environment and wanted to be his "own man".
The 46-year-old, who will soon be seen playing John Lennon for a BBC4 biopic, said if he had stayed in the job he would have had to "blind myself to certain things I thought were wrong".
Eccleston said that - despite his misgivings - the show broke the mould and "I'm very proud of it".
The actor took on the role in 2004 when writer Russell T Davies gave Doctor Who a massive overhaul, bringing it to a new generation of fans.
But despite widespread critical acclaim, the ninth Doctor moved on after his first series.

Christopher Eccleston has admitted that he feels under pressure to play John Lennon well. Eccleston, who will star as the musician in BBC Four drama Lennon Naked, told the Radio Times that everyone knows what Lennon was like. Naoko Mori has admitted that she hated filming nude scenes for her new programme Lennon Naked. Mori plays Yoko Ono in the BBC Four drama but explained that recreating John Lennon and Ono's famous naked photo shoot was difficult. "It was a hideous experience," she told the Daily Record. Former Dr. Who star Christopher Eccleston jumped at the chance to play John Lennon in new BBC film Lennon Naked - because he has always been "fascinated" by the former Beatles star.
The actor, who bears a striking resemblance to Lennon in the film, admits he didn't need to do much research for the role - because he has read so many books about his musical hero.
Eccleston says, "Whenever anything came out I bought it, read it, even the s**t stuff like the (Albert) Goldman book.
"I identified with him (Lennon) because I think he's so flawed, with this compulsion to show the dark side of himself... It was an incredibly intense experience playing him."
And the actor came to a new understanding about his hero while making the film, which chronicles Lennon's love affair with Yoko Ono and the last days of the Beatles.
He tells Britain's Mojo magazine, "I'm not sure he ever recovered from the Beatles breaking up."
And he adds, "What a gift, to have tried to be him... It's like a piece of performance art... I love him."
Joining Eccleston in the film is Naoko Mori as Ono and Andrew Scott as Sir Paul McCartney.

Christopher Eccleston plays John Lennon in a single film charting his transition from Beatle John to enduring and enigmatic icon.
Spanning a period of wildly fluctuating fortunes for Lennon between 1967 and 1971, writer Robert Jones articulates the burden of genius, as well as issues of fatherhood and fame.
The unexpected death of Beatles' manager Brian Epstein in 1967 marked a turning point in Lennon's life. This film focuses on the turbulent and intense period of change that followed, and how John was haunted by his troubled childhood.
Made in high definition, Lennon Naked also reveals the impact of re-establishing contact with his long lost father, and the events that led John to shed everything both personally and creatively, including calling time on The Beatles.
Meeting Yoko Ono was the catalyst for this new era and the film explores the development of their extraordinary relationship, their growing disillusionment with Britain and what caused...

Who knew that The Beatles came from Gallifrey? Ok. They didn't, but at least one of men behind The Doctor's various incarnations is portraying one of the music giants in a new BBC movie.
Christopher Eccleston is portraying the late John Lennon in the new Beeb movie, Lennon Naked. And, the network released the first look at Eccleston in character. The movie is set to air this year on BBC4 -- and (hopefully) soon after on a U.S. network.

London -- BBC drama boss Ben Stephenson on Wednesday announced a slew of big-name drama commissions but said the broadcaster would have to ax several long-running series to free up slots for a new generation of creative and adventurous fare.
