Chicago rapper Che "Rhymefest" Smith co-wrote the Oscar-winning song "Glory" from Selma, has won Grammys and met with U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron to discuss gun violence. But the recently released documentary In My Father's House, directed by Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work), eschews hip-hop hagiography and club-hopping excess to focus on the musician's search for his homeless dad, who abandoned the family when Smith was a child.

Every year, the Oscars' In Memoriam segment proves to be one of the most poignant and emotional moments of the entire year. At this year’s ceremony, the Academy added a nice, simple touch of animating the late stars’ names and pictures with a beautiful watercolor effect.
Of course, this doesn’t matter much for Joan Rivers who was completely forgotten in the segment this year.

That's right, the comedian and actress whose career spanned half of a century couldn’t be honored with a three-second photo. To be fair, the GRAMMYs didn’t include her in their In Memoriam either, despite actually winning a Grammy award this year.
Sure, most of her work has been on television, but she has scores of film credits under her belt, and she even directed the feature film Rabbit Test in 1978, not to mention the massive number of writing credits.

Hollywood greats were honored in the Oscars' annual "In Memoriam" reel, but one person's photo was noticeably absent: Joan Rivers. Rivers - who died in September at the age of 81 after she stopped breathing during a throat procedure - was also not included in the recent Grammys memorial. Many know her for her antics on E!'s Fashion Police and the sharp humor in her 2010 documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. But Rivers, per IMDb, boasts 38 acting credits to her name in a career that spans 63 years. She had roles in everything from Spaceballs to Iron Man 3 and...

Joan Rivers' elaborate Upper East Side penthouse reportedly returned to the real estate market on Monday, with Corcoran listing the apartment for $28 million. Today.com reported that the property went on sale Monday, but Rivers had listed the 11-room condominium off and on since 2009. Rivers' daughter, Melissa, who inherited her $150 million estate, decided to put the home up for sale shortly after Rivers' death, Today.com stated. In her 2010 documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, Rivers described the ornately decorated, 5,100-square-foot residence as where "Marie Antoinette would have lived if she

You also have those experimental docs that are all about playing with the perimeters with film and experience. My list covers those categories and much more. It shows documentaries can really be used to do just about anything.

Make people laugh and they won't even realize you're making them think. Over the past 50 years, women have broken through the glass ceiling time after time, shattering stereotypes and thumbing their noses at the old chestnut that "Women aren't funny." Fact: Anybody who says women aren't funny doesn't want them to be funny. We're looking back on the 50 funniest women of the past 50 years, their contributions to comedy, and their enduring legacies that inspire men and women alike. These are the 50 women who have helped (and are helping) to introduce the next class of hilarious women, which will inevitably include Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, Mindy Kaling, Tig Notaro, Chelsea Handler, Maria Bamford, Aubrey Plaza, and Kate McKinnon. Keep in mind this list only includes women who are primarily performers in movies, television, and standup comedy. That's why you don't see legends like Nora Ephron, Anne Beatts, and Elaine May here.

When Joan Rivers died last week, a common refrain resounded throughout the movie sphere of Twitter: “Watch Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.” It was good advice. And after seeing it, you might have a hankering to check out more docs about entertainers who are devoted to making people laugh. Many years ago I had the odd privilege of hearing a voicemail that Joan Rivers left on a colleague's phone. Ms. Rivers, calling in from a radio studio, was not happy with a review my colleague had written of one of her books. She expressed this displeasure with a blue streak of such undiluted intensity it was practically azure. The thing, though, was that by the end of the call, she was starting to laugh. She was enjoying the improvising and the craft that went into embroidering her obscenities. She was on a roll. She was having fun. I believe...

By now, I imagine most of you have heard that Joan Rivers passed away today, at 81 years old, following complications from throat surgery. The loss is doubly shocking - not just because it came about so abruptly, without any history of health problems, but because Rivers was still such a prickly, alert life force: in her reliable appearances at red carpet events and her E! television presence, she had the same quick, tart wit that made her a pop culture mainstay for a solid half-century.
Rivers' presence in cinema was limited compared to her TV and stand-up: several cameos as herself, both in live-action and animation, and a part in Mel Brooks' sci-fi parody Spaceballs as a sarcastic robot make up virtually all of her movie roles of note. She did, however, appear as the subject of the 2010 documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, a remarkably intimate and...

Joan Rivers, the raucous, acid-tongued comedian who crashed the male-dominated realm of late-night talk shows and turned Hollywood red carpets into danger zones for badly dressed celebrities, died Thursday. She was 81.
Rivers died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, surrounded by family and close friends, daughter Melissa Rivers said. She was hospitalized Aug. 28 after going into cardiac arrest in a doctor's office following a routine procedure. The New York state health department is investigating the circumstances.
"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," Melissa Rivers said. "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."
Under the immobile, plastic surgery-crafted veneer that became Joan Rivers' unapologetic trademark as she aged, her wit remained as vibrantly raw and unruly as when she first broke her way into a comedy world belonging largely to men.

There’s a moment in the excellent documentary, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, that has nothing to do with show business. Joan and her grandson Cooper are riding in the backseat of her town car on Thanksgiving morning, delivering a hot meal to a homebound woman with multiple sclerosis. Cooper tells his grandmother that he got his video-game console from a classmate who had three PSPs and gave him one. “Does he have a single grandfather?” Rivers jokes to the camera. In the small, warm silence that follows, Joan picks up her grandson’s hand and squeezes it. “I love your hands,” she tells him. “They’re good hands.” Cooper reaches over with his other hand and squeezes back. Terribly sad news today with the announcement that comedy legend Joan Rivers has passed away at the age of 81 at home in New York. Rivers had a legendary 50-year career in the entertainment industry, beginning as a stand-up in the 1960s and remaining consistently popular for half a century. A frequent talk-show guest, she eventually became the first woman to host a late-night talk show with Fox's 'The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers." Rivers mostly kept her career to the live circuit and television rather than the movies, but did make a few big-screen appearances, mostly cameos as herself in the likes of "The Muppets Take Manhattan," "Shrek 2," and "Iron Man 3." Joan Rivers, the always sharp and acerbic comedienne who in later years reinvented herself as a fashion critic and celebrity talk show host, has died at age 81. Rivers passed away on Thursday afternoon at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was rushed August 28 after suffering respiratory and cardiac arrest during a doctor's visit. The announcement was made today by daughter Melissa Rivers. From gag-writing in the 1960s to her guest stint on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show" and her own Fox variety program "The Late Show" in the 80s to her documentary vehicle "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work," Rivers broke ground for comics both male and female -- and pulled no punches with her salacious pop culture commentary, open-book style of self-deprecating humor and raucous wit. Born in 1933 Brooklyn as Joan Alexandra Molinsky, Rivers was, to put it lightly, a workhorse, and though divisive in Hollywood, she was fearless and an utter original.

There's a moment in the premiere episode of "Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life," about two-thirds of the way through, when our heroine meets a fan before a show in Manchester who presents her with a book that expresses the thoughts he's too afraid to say aloud to her. The pages explain that the boy, probably all of 15, has had it rough at school, but her song "Animal" has helped him soldier through. He tells her he doesn't know where he'd be without her. It's a sobering moment that reflects on the power of a pop star, or any celebrity for that matter, and the look on Ke$ha's face throughout the encounter proves none of this is lost on her.
It's a powerful moment; it wouldn't be hard to imagine a series built around an unconventional pop star like Ke$ha that focuses on moments like these, examining the...

Can we talk about a legal win? Joan Rivers can celebrate after an appeals court on Friday dismissed a lawsuit brought by a woman who claimed her privacy was violated after she appeared in the 2010 documentary: Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. News, the Justices affirmed a District court's decision to toss the complaint filed by Ann Bogie against the E! personality and IFC Films among other defendants for alleged breach of privacy and misappropriation of her image. Can't anyone give the knuckleball some respect? Baseball's slowest pitch is often treated as a joke — there are precious few living pitchers brave enough to make it their specialty — but the art of throwing weird finally gets its close-up in the fittingly titled new documentary Knuckleball!, directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work). Knuckleball! follows Mets star pitcher R.A. Dickey and retired Red Sox icon Tim Wakefield through the 2011 season as they persist in throwing knuckleballs, despite the fact that even some of their team members think the style is a joke. Take a look at this exclusive clip to see more; the film is currently available on VOD and iTunes and just opened in New York and Boston.

With the summer fading and fall colors beginning to appear, America's greatest pasttime gears up for the post-season as the baseball playoffs are just weeks away. And what better way to gear up for the road to the World Series than with a documentary centered on one of the most curious corners of the game: the knuckleball. From directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg ("The Devil Came on Horseback," "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work") comes "Knuckleball," a documentary on the slowest, strangest and most unpredictable pitch in the game that only a select few are masters. The doc follows two players -- 37-year-old R.A. Dickey (New York Mets, now a 2012 All-Star) and 18-year veteran Tim Wakefield (now retired) -- chronicling their ups and downs during the 2011 season. The film also catches up with five living retired knuckleballers: Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, Charlie Hough, Wilbur Wood, Jim Bouton and Tom Candiotti.

Don't be fooled by the title: the new documentary "Knuckleball!" is about a lot more than the notoriously twisty pitch of the same name.
"For us it was really important that this film isn't just a sports film," "Knuckleball!" co-director Anne Sundberg told HuffPost Entertainment. "A lot of positive feedback we have gotten is audience members who are not necessarily the biggest baseball fans and find themselves drawn to and moved by the story."
Though it's tempting to think about baseball in terms of wins and losses, Sundberg and co-director Rick Stern ("Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work") found plot in a pitch, and two men whose careers have been defined by it: former Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Tim Wakefield and current New York Mets starter R.A. Dickey. Sundberg and Stern followed the pair -- the last two pitchers who made their living throwing a knuckleball -- throughout the 2011 Major League Baseball season,...

"To the masses, it's a circus pitch." We've seen plenty of documentaries about sports, but what about a doc about a certain pitch in baseball - the knuckleball. Yes indeed, the filmmakers behind Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work have made a doc called Knuckleball!, about the two Mlb pitchers from the 2011 series who threw knuckleballs, the kind of pitch that floats in the air first before dropping into a strike. It's unpredictable and not many pitchers use it anymore, except these two guys. Tipped via SlashFilm, looks like they've capture a lot of great emotion behind the stories. "A doc that showcases baseball's most unpredictable pitch." Enjoy! Watch the official trailer for Ricki Stern & Anne Sundberg's doc Knuckleball!, found on YouTube: Knuckleball! is a classic sports story that recounts the 2011 journey of the last professional knuckleball pitchers: Tim Wakefield, a 17-year Red Sox veteran, and Mets up-and-comer R.

Joan Rivers’ new book is called I Hate Everyone … Starting with Me, but there’s one thing she doesn’t hate — PBS.

Baseball is a war of attrition. Even the best hitters fail 70 percent of the time; even the best teams can lose 70 times in a season. That constant battle with failure is what makes "Knuckleball!" such a great representation of the sport. The documentary -- which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday night and screened to rousing applause on Sunday afternoon -- focuses on a single pitch, the knuckleball, and how those who dare to master its fluttering eccentricities are really what makes baseball baseball.
Directed by Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg ("Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work"), "Knuckleball!" highlights the last two Major League Baseball players to earn their living throwing a knuckleball over around the plate: former Boston Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield and current New York Mets starter R.A. Dickey.
