This was the only episode to be filmed and originally broadcast in color. NBC was broadcasting some color programs, so CBS chose this episode to test the water. The show was converted to black-and-white to match the rest of the series for syndicated reruns.
Due to mistake in the sound booth, all of the dialogue in this episode was recorded at a fluctuating speed. As the only color episode of the series, the stakes were already high and everyone was terrified of inciting the wrath of star/producer George Burns, so engineers spent a grueling weekend matching the sound to the film syllable-by-syllable. Burns didn't learn of the mistake until years later.
Actor King Donovan played a bookstore clerk in this episode, before he was cast as Blanche Morton's mooching brother Roger Baker. This leads to Blanche interacting with the clerk as a stranger, when he would later suddenly become her brother.
